Cell Biology: How Do Cells Make Decisions?
The UCSF community honored J. Michael Bishop's 11-year tenure as chancellor of UCSF with an all-day symposium addressing vexing biomedical issues at the Mission Bay campus on June 7. The event focused on four topics: malaria, cell biology, cancer and neurosciences.
As chancellor, Bishop, MD, a Nobel laureate, led UCSF through one of its most expansive periods of growth and achievement, including development of the Mission Bay campus.
In this segment of the symposium, titled Cell Biology: How Do Cells Make Decisions?, the moderator is Marc Kirschner, PhD, John Franklin Enders University Professor of Systems Biology, Department of Systems Biology, Harvard University; the speaker is Richard Losick, PhD, Maria Moors Cabot Professor of Biology, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Harvard University; and panelists are Hana El Samad, assistant professor, Biochemistry & Biophysics, UC Berkeley/UCSF Graduate Group in Bioengineering; and Jonathan Weissman, PhD, professor of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology and of Biochemistry and Biophysics at UCSF.
BIOLOGY; CYTOLOGY; PART 1 by Professor Fink
In Cytology; Part 1 Professor Fink describes The Cell Theory; explains the Limits of Cell Growth (Surface Area to Volume Relationship); defines Prokaryotic versus Eukaryotic Cells; and describes the structure & function of the Cell Membrane. The role of the Phospholipid bilayer and the roles of embedded Protein are presented, including as Ion Channels, Transporter (Carrier) Proteins, Enzymes, Receptor Sites and Glycoprotein Recognition Sites (Cell Identity Markers; MHC proteins). Reference is also made to Self versus Foreign and Auto-Immune Diseases.

CELL THE UNIT OF LIFE: CELL STRUCTURE - 01 For Class 11th and AIPMT
All living forms are composed of microscopic units called as “Cells”. A cell is the basic structural and functional unit of all life forms. Study of structure and composition of cell is called as “Cytology”. Cell was first observed by “Robert Hooke” in a dead cork slice in the year 1665. He described about this in his book “Micrographic”.
The word cell was derived from a Greek word “Cellulae” which means small room. First living cell was discovered by A.V. Leeuwenhoek. The term protoplasm was coined by purkinje in 1839. Protoplasm was discovered by “Felix Dujardin” and named as sarcode.
Its consistency differs under different condition. It exists in sol-gel states. Protoplasm is an aggregate of various chemicals such as water, ions, salts and other organic molecules like proteins, carbohydrates, fats, nucleic acids, vitamins etc.
