"Serial Uncut: The Case of Adnan Syed" presented by Rabia Chaudry

The Penn Law Muslim Law Students Association hosted Rabia Chaudry on March 26 to talk about the case of Serial’s Adnan Syed. In 1999, Syed was convicted of killing Hae Min Lee, a 17 year-old classmate at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore, Maryland. The suspicious circumstances of Syed’s conviction emerged under the national spotlight from the blockbuster Serial podcast presented by journalist Sarah Koenig.

Chaudry is a National Security Fellow at the New America Foundation, a Fellow of the Truman National Security Project, and a Fellow of the American Muslim Civic Leadership Institute. She is credited with first bringing Syed’s case to Koenig’s attention and brings a fresh, new perspective to this troubling case.

The Serial podcast producers are not associated with or sponsors of the talk.

Serial Podcast Leakin Park Animation Adnan Syed Jay Jenn

Most people agree that Jay is a notorious liar. While that does not mean that everything he said in relation to Hae's murder must be untrue (at least the jury thought so), i decided to try a little experiment:

Is the theory of Adnan Syed burying Hae's body in Leakin Park (and thus being involved in her murder) still supported by the other evidence available after disregarding Jay's testimony?
This animation takes into account Adnan's call logs, AT&T expert witness's tower testing data as well as Jenn's and other eyewitness's testimony.

Rabia Chaudry is an attorney who specializes in immigration law, a National Security Fellow at the New America Foundation, and President of the Safe Nation Collaborative, an organization that, among other things, consults with federal agencies about how to counter violent extremism. She writes atSplitTheMoon.com.

But you may know her best because she’s the person who brought the story of Adnan Syed to reporterSarah Koenig, resulting in the Serial podcast phenomenon. Rabia’s little brother was Adnan’s best friend and their families were also close.

(I should point out that we taped this episode the day before the final episode aired. Rabia reflected on the final episode and entire series in this article for TIME.)

We spoke with Rabia about what she learned from Serial that she didn’t know before, her relationship with Sarah Koenig, and whether she was compelled to respond to the misinformation about Adnan online.
