Im Juni 2005 hielt Apple-Gründer Steve Jobs seine wohl berühmteste Rede vor den Absolventen der Stanford University. Dabei gab er drei motivierende und zugleich inspirierende Geschichten aus seiner persönlichen Vergangenheit wieder und gab den jungen Erwachsenen so entscheidende Ratschläge für das eigene Leben mit.

Es ist mir eine grosse Ehre, zur Feier Ihres Abschlusses an einer der besten Universitäten der Welt heute zu Ihnen sprechen zu dürfen. Ich habe keinen Studienabschluss. Aber ich muss sagen, für mich kommt dieser Tag einem Abschluss sehr nahe. Ich möchte Ihnen heute drei Geschichten aus meinem Leben erzählen. Nichts Besonderes, einfach drei Geschichten.

Die erste handelt davon, eine Verbindungslinie zwischen den Punkten zu ziehen.

Ich habe das Studium am Reed College schon nach sechs Monaten hingeworfen, blieb aber noch anderthalb Jahre, bevor ich endgültig ging. Warum eigentlich?

Ich hatte keine Ahnung, was ich mit meinem Leben anfangen wollte und inwiefern mir das College helfen würde, eine Antwort zu finden. Und gab dabei das ganze Geld aus, das meine Eltern in ihrem Leben zusammengespart hatten. Ich beschloss, das Studium abzubrechen und darauf zu vertrauen, dass schon alles gut werde. Damals war ich verunsichert, aber aus heutiger Sicht muss ich sagen, dass es eine der besten Entscheidungen war, die ich je getroffen habe. Kaum hatte ich beschlossen, mein Studium hinzuschmeissen, brauchte ich die ganzen uninteressanten Sachen nicht mehr zu lernen und konnte in die Kurse gehen, die mich interessierten.

Am Reed College gab es damals den vielleicht besten Kalligrafie-Kurs im ganzen Land. Jedes Plakat auf dem Campus, jedes Etikett war schön beschriftet. Weil ich ausgestiegen war und nicht an den üblichen Pflichtkursen teilnehmen musste, beschloss ich, mich mit Kalligrafie zu beschäftigen. Ich erfuhr etwas über Serifenschriften und serifenlose Schriften, über die unterschiedlichen Zwischenräume zwischen verschiedenen Buchstabenkombinationen, ich lernte, was wirklich gute Typografie ausmacht. Das war schön, historisch informativ und von einer Ästhetik, der man in den Naturwissenschaften nicht begegnet. Ich war fasziniert.

Von einer praktischen Anwendung schien das meilenweit entfernt zu sein. Aber zehn Jahre später, als wir den ersten Macintosh-Computer entwickelten, war alles wieder da. Und wir packten alles in den Mac. Es war der erste Computer mit schöner Typografie. Hätte ich diesen einen Kurs nicht besucht, hätte es beim Mac nie verschiedene Schrifttypen oder Proportionalschriften gegeben. Und da Windows einfach den Mac kopierte, hätte es das vermutlich auch nicht bei Personalcomputern gegeben. Wenn ich nicht ausgestiegen wäre, hätte ich nie diesen Kalligrafiekurs besucht, und Personalcomputer hätten nicht die schöne Typografie. Natürlich war es unmöglich, schon auf dem College die Punkte miteinander zu verbinden. Aber zehn Jahre später, im Rückblick, war alles ganz klar.

Noch einmal: Man kann die Punkte nicht verbinden, wenn man sie vor sich hat. Die Verbindung ergibt sich erst im Nachhinein. Man muss also darauf vertrauen, dass sich die Punkte irgendwann einmal zusammenfügen. Man muss an etwas glauben – Intuition, Schicksal, Leben, Karma, was immer. Diese Haltung hat mich nie enttäuscht, sie hat mein Leben entscheidend geprägt. [...]

Steve Jobs compared The Whole Earth Catalog to Internet search engine Google in his June 2005 Stanford University commencement speech, the Steve Jobs Story: Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation.... It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along. It was idealistic and overflowing with neat tools and great notions. Stay hungry. Stay foolish. During the commencement speech, Jobs also quoted the farewell message placed on the back cover of the 1974 edition of the catalog: Stay hungry. Stay foolish.

Stay hungry: Have a want, or need to feel like what you have right now isn't enough. You can always build something better. One day, there will be something better and more important than even the iPad.

Stay foolish: Notions like that isn't possible or no one's ever done that so we can't should be something you foolishly cast to the wind because that kind of thinking isn't how you change things but instead how you maintain the status quo.

Molti hanno deciso di ricordarlo così, con la frase rivolta nel 2005 ai laureandi di Standford (qui il video storico dei 15 minuti di discorso) in cui incitava i giovani a rimanere Affamati e folli, sempre desiderosi di nuovi orizzonti, nuove sfide e possibilità e sempre abbastanza avventati da raggiungere ciò che fino a quel momento era considerato impossibile.

Ed è proprio così che il mondo lo ricorderà. Morto ieri all'età di 56 anni dopo una lunga fase di malattia per un tumore al pancreas con cui aveva combattuto per sette lunghi anni, Jobs non ha solo rivoluzionato il modo di concepire, produrre e vivere il mondo dell'HiTech, ma è divenuto un simbolo grazie ad idee e progetti rivoluzionari che hanno lasciato un segno indelebile nella storia moderna.

Fondata la Apple nel 1976, Jobs ha trasformato un'azienda nata in un garage in uno dei più grandi colossi dell'industria informatica mondiale, rivoluzionando il rapporto stesso tra individuo e computer e ponendo per la prima volta usabilità e design al primo posto rispetto a tutti i concorrenti. I primi Macintosh, con la prima forma di interfaccia grafica che superava le noiose linee di testo ed i noiosi manuali. Le prime forme di pubblicità creativa in cui la mela di Cupertino diveniva il simbolo stesso dell'anticonformismo e del think different (storico il primo spot con scene ispirate al Big Brother Orwelliano). Ma soprattutto Jobs ha ispirato e prodotto la serie di prodotti tecnologici destinati al tempo libero di più ampio successo della storia. Non lettore Mp3, smartphone e tablet; iPod, iPhone e iPad hanno imposto la propria qualità e facilità di utilizzo in un continuo di killer applications che ha cambiato il mercato di massa, legando per sempre Steve Jobs, la Apple e la sua iLife alla storia del consumo.

Non clienti, bensì fan di un mondo complesso che con una propria narrazione di eleganza, semplicità e qualità ha portato gli Apple Store ad essere veri luoghi di esperienza più che semplici negozi. Fu di Jobs la scelta di ritirare i prodotti dai centri commerciali e creare Store monomarca; fu suo l'imprinting sul primo modello di iPod che rivoluzionò l'idea stessa di musica portatile; fu lui che portò avanti il progetto di un Apple Store online in cui per la prima volta la musica digitale diveniva settore di business più che espressione di pirateria.

Affamato e folle; tanto folle da venir cacciato dalla sua stessa azienda, ripresentandosi al mondo due anni dopo alla guida della Pixar per rivoluzionare anche il mondo dell'animazione cinematografica, intaccando il monopolio del colosso Disneyano. Tanto geniale e innovativo da tornare poi alla guida della Apple nel 1996 come CEO ad interim, a vita, indispensabile ed insostituibile.

Alcuni hanno sottolineato che il primo evento di presentazione senza Steve, tenutosi pochi giorni fa con l'uscita dell'iPhone4s e la prima apparizione pubblica di Tim Coock nella veste di CEO dell'azienda ha già il cambiamento di lungimiranza dell'azienda di Cupertino. Certo è che non sarà solo la Apple a sentire la mancanza di un uomo come Steve Jobs, il cui lavoro continuerà ad influenzare il mondo intero per molti, molti anni.

Più che ogni altre, le parole di Barack Obama esprimono l'importanza e l'impatto di Jobs sulla realtà: Il mondo ha perso un visionario. E non vi è più grande tributo al successo di Steve del fatto che molti hanno appreso della sua scomparsa su un dispositivo che ha inventato
