Infectious Diseases: Common cold or the flu?

Influenza and the common cold are respiratory illnesses caused by viruses. Symptoms may be so similar they may be tell the difference at first. There are over 100 different types of rhinovirus, which is what makes the common cold so common, says Dr. Nipunie Rajapakse, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist at Mayo Clinic. The symptoms that we see with common cold tend to be runny nose, cough, some people may have a mild fever.

“Influenza is a specific type of infection caused by a specific virus. That’s usually influenza A or influenza B virus. The cold, on the other hand, is caused by hundreds of different types of viruses. The main difference that you would notice is that influenza tends to cause what we call more systemic symptoms. You are more likely to have fever, body aches and pains than you are with the cold, which tends to be usually just runny nose, sore throat, and possibly some cough, says Dr. Rajapakse.

Common Cold - What Is A Cold - What Is A Virus - Viral Infection

In this video I discuss what is the common cold, and what is a virus, or viral infection. I discuss some common cold symptoms, and some common cold remedies.

What is the common cold?

The common cold is brought on by a viral infection, over 200 types of virus can cause the problem. Some symptoms include runny nose, sneezing, headache, raised temperature, sore throat, cough and even reddened eyes. There is no cure for it, and antibiotics have no effect against the viruses.

Cold remedies do nothing to fight the virus, but they can sometimes provide some relief.

The common cold is spread in air, tiny mucus droplets coughed or sneezed by those infected, also from person to person through contact, such as shaking hands, or sharing objects like cups or silverware. Many viruses can survive up to 18 hours in the environment , and be picked up by peoples hands and carried to their eyes, nose or mouth.

What is a virus? How a virus works?
Now lets take a look at what happens once we catch the “cold”, or virus to be more exact. Typically virus particles from the air will land on cells in the nose or throat area. They then quickly multiply and kill the host cell. They continue to do this going from cell to cell.

Our immune system gets alerted of these invaders and sends in defender cells known as white blood cells. There are different types of white blood cells, with 2 of the most powerful being B cells, and T cells.

So, what happens is the white blood cells arrive at the scene of the crime and the B cells release antibodies, which immobilize the virus particles. The t cells may play a couple of different roles. They can help the b cells make more antibodies, giving more troops to fight the virus, or they can release chemicals that go into an infected cell and kill the cell and any virus inside it.

Then, other white blood cells called phagocytes come in and clean up, engulfing the virus particles, and damaged cells. Then the cold subsides.

Once the virus is wiped out, there are some specialist b and t cells that retain a memory of the virus. So, if the same virus returns, the immune system knows exactly how to attack it. This gives our body what is called acquired immunity.

So, what can we do to minimize the risk of getting the common cold?

Wash your hands often, especially after or when you are in a public place touching surfaces used by other people. Avoid touching your face in public areas, keep household items clean such as doorknobs and remotes, use paper towels as germs can live on cloth towels for several hours.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle by staying active, eating nutritious foods and getting enough sleep, as this will help keep your respiratory and immune systems in good condition. Keeping stress to a minimum will also help your immune system, and obviously, avoid, as best you can, anyone that has a cold.

Corona Virus Disease / COVID-19: Facts and figures for Public Awareness

How COVID-19 Spreads
Person-to-person spread
The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

Can someone spread the virus without being sick?
People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest).
Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
Spread from contact with contaminated surfaces or objects
It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

How easily the virus spreads
How easily a virus spreads from person-to-person can vary. Some viruses are highly contagious (spread easily), like measles, while other viruses do not spread as easily. Another factor is whether the spread is sustained, spreading continually without stopping.

Should I wear a respirator in public?
CDC does not recommend the routine use of respirators outside of workplace settings (in the community). Most often, spread of respiratory viruses from person-to-person happens among close contacts (within 6 feet). CDC recommends everyday preventive actions to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, such as avoiding people who are sick, avoiding touching your eyes or nose, and covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue. People who are sick should stay home and not go into crowded public places or visit people in hospitals. Workers who are sick should follow CDC guidelines and stay home when they are sick.
What is a respirator?
A respirator is a personal protective device that is worn on the face or head and covers at least the nose and mouth. A respirator is used to reduce the wearer’s risk of inhaling hazardous airborne particles (including infectious agents), gases or vapors. Respirators, including those intended for use in healthcare settings, are certified by the CDC/NIOSH.
What is an N95 filtering facepiece respirator (FFR)?
An N95 FFR is a type of respirator which removes particles from the air that are breathed through it. These respirators filter out at least 95% of very small (0.3 micron) particles. N95 FFRs are capable of filtering out all types of particles, including bacteria and viruses.

Checklist to Get Ready
As a family, you can plan and make decisions now that will protect you and your family during a COVID-19 outbreak.

Stay informed and in touch
Get up-to-date information about local COVID-19 activity from public health officials
Ask your neighbors what their plan includes.
Create a list of local organizations you and your household can contact in case you need access to information, healthcare services, support, and resources.
Create an emergency contact list including family, friends, neighbors, carpool drivers, healthcare providers, teachers, employers, the local public health department, and other community resources.
Prepare for possible illness
Consider members of the household that may be at greater risk such as older adults and people with severe chronic illnesses.
Choose a room in your house that can be used to separate sick household members from others.
Take everyday preventive steps
Wash your hands frequently
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces Be prepared if your child’s school or childcare facility is temporarily dismissed or for potential changes at your workplace.

Coronavirus Vaccine Human trials (in Hindi) COVID 19 वैक्सीन कैसे काम करेगी

SARS-Co-V-2 gol hai aur uske upar protein spikes hai. Insani cells k upar bohot receptors hai jiska istemaal karke virus cell ke andar aa sakta hai
Fir kaafi saari tasveer li gayi jisko combine karke ek 3D structure banaya gaya
Is 3D structure ne, vaccine m-RNA-one two seven three banane me scientists ke kaafi help ki.
Jab is vaccine ko insaani cell me inject karte hai to who insaani cell viral protein banaa ti hai
Scientists ka ye maan na hai ke ye viral protein hamari immunity bada sakta hai, aur Coronavirus se protect kar sakta hai
m-RNA-one two seven three ko jaanwaro me test kiya jaa chuka hai. Aur ab is ko insaano me test karna hai.
Clinical trial me 45 volunteer, 18-55 years ki umar ki honge. Volunteers ko haath me do intramuscular injection diye jayenge. Filhaal scientists ye pata karna chahte hai k immune response ke liye vaccine ka kitna dose lagega. Ye abhi shuruwaat hai, aur bhi kafi test karne hai.
Abhi 15 volunteers ke teen group banaye jayenge, jinhe alag alag vaccine dose diya jayga. Pehle chaar volunteer ko kam dose diya jayga aur scientist unki testing karenge
Agar ye chaar volunteer safe honge, to 25 microgram wala dose diya jayga. Agar 25 microgram dose ke volunteer safe hai to 100 microgram diya jayga.
Esi tarah dose bada ke volunteers ke blood me se immune response ki testing hogi.
