15 Things You Didn't Know The Purpose Of!

Top things you didn’t know the purpose of! These are the everyday items and things you didn’t know the use for!

#14. “Pen Cap”-- You have definitely noticed the tiny hole in the top of a cap and may have used it to try and make a whistle or pretended it was a tiny spyglass. Most people believe this hole has something to do with preventing a pen from drying-out but this is not the case. The hole in the pen cap actually serves as a safety feature. In the event that a small child swallows one, the hole allows air to pass through and reduces the risk of suffocation.

#13. “Measuring Tape Tools”-- The modern measuring tape machine is a handy invention that most construction workers and contractors can’t live without, but even some of the most skilled workers might not know it has two incredible yet simple features. First there is the serrated edge on the metal end of the tape. This was put into the design so that if you desired you could put a minor scratch or indentation into the surface you are measuring, in order to give you a marker to make further measurements or designs off of. The other feature is right next to the serrated edge. You may have noticed the small hole that is commonly located in the metal tip. So what’s the purpose of this? Well this is so that if you are measuring something from a point where a nail or screw is you can hook the tape onto the nail and hold the tape in place.

#12. “The Quarter’s Edge”-- You probably have spied the hundreds of tiny grooves that mark the outside edge of a quarter but not thought twice about it having a purpose. But these tiny ridges actually once served an important function and no it’s not just so magician’s can get a better grip during coin tricks. Up until recently, historically speaking, the cost of the metals in a coin reflected the coins value so many people took to shaving the edges off of the coins and then used the rest of the coin to purchase items as if the coin still had full value. They would then save up their shavings and melted them together to create new coins or just sell the chunks. In order to combat this, coin minters started putting these ridges on their coins so that retailers could tell whether the coins had been shaved. This practice, though not necessary today, is carried on for the sake of tradition and aesthetic. So why don’t nickels have them? Because no one cares about nickels.

11 Most Mysterious Things That Should Not Exist

Here are some artifacts that will leave you with questions like the sculptures portraying dinosaurs w/ humans only 4500 years ago.

Subscribe to Talltanic

7. Acambaro Figures

If number 8 is true then is it possible humans still lived with dinosaurs at some point? The figures discovered in Mexico seem to make it seem possible. In 1944, Waldemar Julsrud discovered thousands of figurines of dinosaurs while riding his horse. He began bringing back these sculptures to someone who was paying him for it; and gathering quite the collection nonetheless. Some of the figurines included dinosaurs with people from all over the world. There were sculptures of Egyptians, Sumerians and Caucasian people with figures of dinosaurs only modern technology could come up with. The initial dating concluded these artifacts are about 4,500 years old.

6. The Maine Penny

Americans seem to be stuck on the fact that Christopher Columbus discovered America. If this is the case, then this artifact should not exist. An 11th century Norse coin was found on the coast of Maine which is evidence of direct European contact of American soil.If that hasn’t blown your mind yet, it’s believed that this coin was used for trade among the Native Americans. Imagine Viking longboats sailing across the shores of present day New England. The coin was found in a known Native American settlement called Naskeag Point. Could this be evidence we need to declare that the Vikings made it further west than Greenland.

5. The Dorchester Pot

This was a metal vase like object that exploded in two pieces in an attempt to break up rocks by miners in Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1852. The vase was embedded in sedimentary rock and to be dynamited out of soil for us to know it existed. The strange part is that it was below 15 feet of rocks which means it had been there for quite a long time. The pot is made from a zinc and silver alloy and decorated on the sides a carvings of flowers and trees. It certainly doesn’t look like something Americans made. Geologists date the rock back to 1 million years old. Where could this relic of a by-gone age have come from.

4. Lanzhou Stone

A mysterious object found in China near the Marzong Mountain region brings many to believe the possibility of evidence on other planets. The stone was found with a metal bar inside and the origins of the rock are unknown. Skeptics believe that it may be a meteorite but the object within is what attracts so many geologists to this artifact. More than 10 geologists and global physicians gathered to study the rock and find out its true mysterious origins. They were all completely puzzled and couldn’t identify what type of rock it was or where the metal bar inside came from. They haven’t not ruled out the possibility of something from out of this world.

3. Wolfsegg Iron

Also known as the Salzburg cube found in Austria in 1885, this object has been declared an out of place artifact by many when it was discovered in a 20 million years old coal seam. At first many believed it was meteorite that struck the ground and ended up in the coal seam that way. But further testing showed that this wasn’t the case since it lacked the common elements like nickel, chromium or cobalt and the chunk of iron remained a mystery.

2. American Stealth Fighter Jet Found in China

This American fighter jet was found using google maps any many were wondering, what on earth is it doing there?! This is believed to be a lockheed F-117 Nighthawk that proved its potential fighting capabilities in the Gulf War between the USA and Iraq in 1991. So what exactly is it doing in China of all places?! We haven’t necessarily been military allies with China, ever. This was found on a 2010 version of google maps near the city of Luoyang outside a test center for surface to air missiles. Did the Chinese possibly capture our technology and are trying to build their own? Is there something our government was hiding? Maybe China built an exact replica but the design of US has, for the most part, remained a secret. This is definitely something that should not exist unless China has been spying on us.

1. Vacanti Mouse

This is a mouse genetically modified in a laboratory and would never exist if it wasn’t for human intervention and experiments. The ear was actually cartilage modified in the shape of the ear constructed from seeding cow DNA. When the cartilage began to grow, it was molded to look this way. There was no human DNA in the making of this. Also known as the “ear mouse” for good reason, was created by Charles Vacanti in the university of Massachusetts. This sparked the question on the morality of genetic modification after it was passed around the internet. Should these be allowed if it can benefit humans who lost limbs or ears in accidents? We’d like to hear in the comment section.

11. MYSTERIOUS SPANISH SQUARE
In El Ejido in southern Spain there is a perfectly square blur in the middle of what appears to be a sea of tin roofs and development sites. What’s underneath this square is a mystery and of course there are many theories as to what it could be. If you look up this location on either Bing or Yahoo maps, the hidden area remains constant, unlike some of the other areas mentioned on this list. Depending on who you talk to, conspiracy theorists claim it could be anything from a helicopter pad to a missile silo. However, while searching the internet I found a link to maps from a Russian company that does not block this square and it isn't blurred, but we still don't know what it is. It is most likely a hidden heliport that serves some unknown purpose.
10. SZAZHALOMBATTA OIL REFINERY, HUNGARY
This Hungarian oil refinery has one of the strangest acts of censorship you will ever see. The facility requested to be covered by a green block on the map with the streets still laid out. The buildings and grounds have been deleted but nobody knows why. However, it’s only like this on Google Earth. If you look up this location on any other map provider you can see everything; pipelines, storage tanks, production facilities, etc. making this a very confusing attempt at censoring. What's hiding underneath?
9. UNKNOWN RUSSIAN SITE
There is a Specific location in Siberia that has been blurred out, and supposedly no one knows why. Under Communism there were many closed cities that were home to strategic families. Most were not shown on maps and freedom of movement was heavily restricted. In 1986, Russian citizens were officially told that there were dozens of these cities and towns all over the country, housing over a million people. The town known as Arzamas-16 was the home of the engineers who ended America’s monopoly. Could this spot be one of the secret, closed cities? Commenters on the website Siberian Light, have speculated it’s a radar station or missile interceptor, and others say that it is an oil rig or pipeline. The image of the surrounding area may have even been copied and pasted from another part of the country. The closest city to this spot is Egvekinot, Russia, which neighbors Alaska across the Bering Strait so it's unclear what could be hiding in the middle of the Siberian tundra. Maybe we could ask Sarah Palin since she can see it from her house.
8. COLONEL SANDERS
Everyone knows Colonel Sanders, the face of Kentucky Fried Chicken. KFC has him on every single billboard, commercial, the internet and he’s instantly recognizable with his great combo of mustache and glasses. However, don’t be expected to find his likeness on Google Earth or street view. Every single KFC location has the Colonel's face blurred out. Doesn’t do much good, as we all know exactly who they’re trying to hide. But why blur him out in the first place? According to Google Sanders was a real person, and for security reasons every single person on Google maps and earth is suppose to be blurred out.
6. VOLKEL AIR BASE, THE NETHERLANDS
As you browse Google Earth, you’ll find that there are actually quite a few blocked out spots across the Netherlands, a country notorious for censoring their military facilities online. This picture shows the Volkel Air Base, so pixilated that it looks like neo-impressionism. This Photoshop fail has been hiding a dark secret for years. In 2010, much to conspiracy theorists delight, Wikileaks published a diplomatic cable that said The Air Base was storing American warheads. This wasn’t confirmed until the next year, when former Dutch Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers stated that the Volkel Air Base is in fact housing 22 B61 items. These items were the favorite tool in America’s “Enduring Stockpile” What's scary is that these items are four times more powerful than the items that were dropped on Japan in 1945. But even after Dutch officials admitted what was going on, The site remains blocked on Google Earth. More recently former Prime Minister Lubbers said that, “I would never have thought those silly things would still be there in 2013. I think they are an absolutely pointless part of a tradition in military thinking.” There is probably a lot more lying behind that pixilated curtain.
5. BAKER LAKE, NUNAVUT
Baker Lake is near the exact geographic center of Canada and prides itself on its Inuit art and ecotourism.

If you like this video subscribe to List25:

Our atmosphere is one of the most protective and important parts of our planet. Responsible for sheltering us from the harsh conditions of outer space, such as solar radiation and space debris, the atmosphere is a complex structure. Though we may not give it due credit in our daily lives, the world's attention was turned to its layers in 2013 when veteran skydiver Felix Baumgartner took a capsule up to the highest levels of the stratosphere - about 120,000 feet above the Earth's surface - and jumped. His record-shattering free fall spawned a new wave of interest in space travel and atmospheric science (and a bit of notoriety for his sponsor, too).

In this list, we highlight facts about our atmosphere which aren't well-known but should be for how important they are to our understanding of the world around us. We discuss how the ozone layer was formed; how deserts form in the middle latitudes; how the northern and southern lights brighten the sky with their glow; and what causes the white streaks sometimes left by planes shooting through our atmosphere. Be the smartest person at your next party with these 25 Facts About The Earth's Atmosphere That Are Truly Majestic.

Check out the physical list here:

Believe it or not, the sky is actually purple. As light enters the atmosphere, air and water particles absorb and reemit the light, scattering it on its way to our eyes. Since scattering prefers shorter wavelengths, the most commonly scattered color is actually violet. We think we see a blue sky rather than a purple one because our eyes are more sensitive to the color blue.

As you likely learned in science class, our atmosphere is made of about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and miniscule percentages of argon, carbon dioxide, and other gases. What you might not have learned is that our atmosphere is the only one we have discovered (besides a magnificent find on Comet 67P) which has free oxygen. Since oxygen is a highly reactive gas, it often binds with other chemicals in space. Its pure form on Earth makes the planet habitable and leads our search for life on other planets.

Most people will probably get this question wrong: is there more water in the clouds or in a clear sky? Though we'd think clouds are the main depository since they drop water, most of the water in our atmosphere is invisible water vapor. For this reason, more sweat lingers on our bodies when the water vapor in the air, known as humidity, is higher.

Some global warming skeptics argue it's not a real phenomenon because their city has been getting colder. In fact, Earth's global climate is the combination of a wide variety of regional climates. So even though some areas are warming while others are cooling, on the whole, the average global climate is rapidly warming.

Ever wonder what causes the white streak seen after some planes shoot through the sky? These white trails, known as contrails or condensation trails, form when the hot, humid exhaust from an engine mixes with the colder outside air. Water vapor from the exhaust freezes and becomes visible, just like your warm breath on a cold day. A thin and rapidly disappearing contrail means the air at those high altitudes is low in humidity, indicating good weather. A thick, persistent contrail signals high humidity and may mean a storm is coming.

Our atmosphere has five primary layers which make life possible. The first, the troposphere, extends from sea level to about 11 miles (17 kms) up at the Equator. Most of our weather happens here due to the mixture of warm air rising and falling to form clouds and wind.

The next layer is the stratosphere, reaching up to around 30 miles (50 kms) above equatorial sea level. Herein lies the ozone layer, which protects us from dangerous ultraviolet rays. Though it is higher than the troposphere, it can actually be warmer due to the energy absorbed from solar rays.

The mesosphere is the middle layer, extending to 52 miles (85 kms) above the planet's surface where temperatures hover around -180°F (-120°C). Most of the meteors which enter our atmosphere burn up in the mesosphere.

11 BIGGEST Things On Earth!

These are the largest things on Earth! Find out about the the world’s biggest things including the biggest tree and the biggest animal ever and the largest things in the world!

5. Amphicoelias -

This extinct species was a member of the sauropod dinosaur genus, meaning they had long necks, extended tails, and stood on four trunk-like, thick legs. They are also known for their incredible size! The amphicoelias’ remains are noted to be the most colossal ever discovered; however, only one bone of the skeleton was found, and measurements were based solely on this finding. Unfortunately, the dino’s remains have been lost, and scientists can only draw conclusions based on studies done in the late 1800s. But, if the findings from over one hundred years ago are correct, then this creature was enormous! It could grow up to one hundred ninety feet long and weigh up to one hundred thirty-four tons! Although this monstrous beast would be quite terrifying to come upon in the wild, there are a couple of things to keep in mind; one, this dinosaur has been extinct for centuries, and two, it was a herbivore, meaning it preferred leafy greens over a rare steak. So, unless Jurassic Park comes to life, then we’ve got nothing to worry about.

4. Jackfruit -

Many of us have heard of this fruit, but aren’t really sure what it is or where it comes from. It is often used in vegan cooking in place of proteins like pork, but can also be eaten as-is and is often used in South Asian recipes since it occurs naturally in Southwest India. Although the jackfruit’s spiky exterior gives it a less-than-appetizing appearance, its flesh is sweet and delicate in flavor. This odd-looking delight is also the biggest fruit in the world that grows on trees. It can weigh up to one hundred twenty pounds and grow up to thirty-five inches long and twenty inches wide!

3. Henry Doorly Zoo -

This gigantic park and conservation area is located in Omaha, Nebraska. Its goal is to help understand various animal species better, educate others about these creatures, maintain people’s interest, and keep them coming back to visit and learn. Although this zoo isn’t the largest when only considering its physical size, its extensive variety of animals combined with its acreage make it one of the biggest things on Earth. The Henry Doorly Zoo spans over one hundred thirty acres and houses upwards of seventeen thousand animals! Plus, this park includes an aquarium as well. Some of its exhibits include Asian Highlands, Kingdoms of the Night (the world’s most tremendous nocturnal exhibition), and the Lied Jungle (the biggest indoor rainforest in America). Because of its numerous exciting and unique habitats, the Henry Doorly Zoo attracts about two million visitors every year!
