Architectural secrets of the world's ancient wonders | Brandon Clifford

How did ancient civilizations move massive stones to build Stonehenge, the Pyramids and the Easter Island statues? In this quick, delightful talk, TED Fellow Brandon Clifford reveals some architectural secrets of the past and shows how we can use these ingenious techniques to build today. In an era where we design buildings to last 30, maybe 60 years, I would love to learn how to create something that could entertain for an eternity, he says.

6. Troy
The legend of the Trojan War is One of the most powerful stories from ancient Greek literature and forms the basis of Homer’s The Iliad. Most of us have also probably seen the movie. Ancient troy commanded a strategic point at the southern entrance to the Dardanelles, a narrow strait linking the Black Sea with the Aegean Sea. The approximate Location of Troy was mentioned in several works by ancient Greek and Latin authors but was lost for hundreds of years until in the 1800's when scholars Charles Maclaren and Frank Calvert were able to persuade German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann to Excavate a mysterious mound know as Hisarlik. Everyone else had ignored Maclaren and Calvert claiming that the legend of Troy was just a story based on myth, not history. Of course, Schliemann took full credit for the discovery once he began uncovering the ancient city. Life lessons guys, always trust your instinct and don't let other people take credit for your hard work. The actual site where the city of Troy was located has About 9 different layers of settlements, towns and cities that could have been the Troy led by King Priam whose son Paris, ran away with Helen, wife of Menelaus, King of Sparta. The first and oldest layer dates back to the Early Bronze Age (around 2000 BCE). Later versions of Troy were destroyed by fire, and others by earthquake and war. Then, it was abandoned and forgotten, until the legend became truth.
5. Pompeii
When Pompeii was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius, the City was buried under layers of volcanic rock and ash—frozen in time—until its rediscovery and exploration in the 18th century. Pompeii had a population of between 10,000 to 20,000 people and was famous for its excellent farmland. One of the ironies of volcanoes is that They tend to lure people in because they produce very fertile soil. In the towns below it, most people would not have known that Vesuvius was a volcano or that a Bronze Age settlement in the area had already been annihilated almost 2,000 years before. Vesuvius is actually Inside the exploded skeleton of an older volcano. If you look at an aerial photograph, you can see the remaining ridge of a much larger volcano on the north side. Around 2,000 people were killed in Pompeii from a cloud of scorching gases and thousands of tons of rock and ash that rained down over the city. The powdery ash that buried everyone was so fine that You can even see people's eyelids preserved like a plaster cast. The Emperor Titus declared Pompeii an emergency zone and offered financial assistance for cleanup and recovery. But the buried towns were beyond salvaging. Eventually, Pompeii and Herculaneum were Taken off local maps and forgotten for hundreds of years. Within a few centuries, settlers had repopulated the empty terrain, unconcerned with what lay below. The African plate, on which most of the Mediterranean Sea rests, is actually diving beneath the European plate. Under pressure underground the gases stay dissolved. When the magma rises to the surface it compresses, causing volcanoes to explode. To this day, Vesuvius Remains one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes; some 3.5 million Italians live in its shadow, and about 2 million tourists visit the ruins each year. Although monitoring devices are in place if there is a major eruption with little warning and the winds are blowing toward Naples there could be another major disaster.
4. Harappa and Mohenjo Daro
The discovery of the Indus Valley civilization (aka the Harappan Civilization) in what is now Pakistan was first recorded in the 1800's by the British. The locals also knew about it before then but there was no widespread archaeological excavation until the 1920s. This mysterious culture emerged nearly 4,500 years ago and thrived for a thousand years, profiting from the highly fertile lands of the Indus River floodplain and trade with the civilizations of nearby Mesopotamia. It remains mysterious because Scholars have still not been able to decipher the language, and instead have to guess at their daily life based on the objects that have been found. Mohenjo-daro and Harappa were highly advanced cities of their time, with Remarkably sophisticated civil engineering and urban planning reaching their golden age between 2,600 to 1900 BCE.
Harappa had a level of Architectural planning that was unparalleled in the ancient world.

Hanging Gardens of Babylon - The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

#Mythology #SeeUinHistory #History #MythologyExplained

wiki: The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World as listed by Hellenic culture, described as a remarkable feat of engineering with an ascending series of tiered gardens containing a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and vines, resembling a large green mountain constructed of mud bricks, and said to have been built in the ancient city of Babylon, near present-day Hillah, Babil province, in Iraq. Its name is derived from the Greek word kremastós , which has a broader meaning than the modern English word hanging and refers to trees being planted on a raised structure such as a terrace

10. Mystery Heads
Finding disembodied heads underground in an Ancient Egyptian tomb sounds like something from a horror movie. But don’t worry, they’re not real heads. As for what they were doing there, the jury’s still out. The heads are a bit of a mystery to this day. The first examples were discovered in 1894 and since then, over 30 have been located. They were nicknamed ‘reserve heads’ because… well, they looked like a bunch of spare heads!

9. The Giza Void
It’s amazing how even the oldest landmarks can still surprise you. In 2017 experts were very surprised when examining the legendary Great Pyramid of Giza on the West Bank of the Nile. As you may know, but just in case you don’t this ancient wonder of the world was built for Pharaoh Khufu and is the largest one of 3.

8. Kites
Mysterious lines in the Egyptian deserts have been seen from the air for around a century. Everyone was wondering what they were! It turns out, they’re made up of little stone walls, not very high at all, in a kite-style formation. Some of them are as long as 40 miles. Even more mysterious was the fact that they lead toward a pit in the sand.

7. King Tut’s Mummy
One of the great mysteries of Ancient Egypt is the circumstances surrounding the death of Tutankhamun. Howard Carter found his legendary tomb in 1922 and made him a historical superstar. What’s maybe not as well known is that King Tut died very young, while in his teens.

6. Black Boxes
If you thought the Great Pyramid of Giza sounded mysterious, wait till you hear about what was found in Memphis! In a cave network 12 miles away from Giza, 24 big black boxes were found. They weigh 100 tons each and are so unusual that some believe them to be alien artefacts!

5. Lost Labyrinth
In the vicinity of the Middle Egyptian city of Faiyum, 100 km (62 miles) southwest of Cairo, there is an area known as Faiyum Oasis. Supposedly, there lies what’s left of one of the most immense and talked-about structures of Ancient Egypt… the mysterious Lost Labyrinth.

4. That’s a Wrap
Though people don’t know a lot about Ancient Egypt, there are certain things everybody knows about, hopefully. Egypt is famous for its pyramids and also the mummies. Examples have been found of mummies that don’t look the way you’d expect. Take this one in the Louvre museum in Paris. It’s an exhibit in the long-established Department of Egyptian Antiquities, which is made up of an impressive 30 rooms showcasing all manner of finds.

3. The Dendera Light
While we believe the light bulb is a relatively modern invention, some commentators would dispute this. In fact they’d go so far as to say the Ancient Egyptians had access to a power source that gave them things like electric light way before it was officially invented!

2.Exploding Pyramid
So I just mentioned a possible power supply in ancient Egypt. But what if I told you about
another theory on this subject that takes place on a MUCH bigger scale? It all revolves around that classic image we associate with the time… a pyramid.

1. The Building of the Pyramids
I know, we’ve talked a lot about pyramids but this is a video about Ancient Egypt! What did you expect? After many, many years, the question still is, how did the pyramids get built in the first place? The construction of these mighty structures is a matter of ongoing debate between pros and amateurs alike.

Ancient Wonders of the World

2002 documentary for the Travel Channel.

If you had to pick seven ancient wonders of the world, which ones would they be? We've compiled a list of our top 7, from the soaring heights of the Great Pyramid, to the statues of Easter Island, exotic Mayan temples, a Roman amphitheatre, and the Great Wall of China.

In this documentary we explore some of the most awesome ancient wonders, each rich in stories of mystery and intrigue. We take part in the summer solstice celebrations at Stonehenge, walk the Great Wall of China, and join archaeologists in Mexico as they hunt for treasure in the Mayan temples. By searching for clues hidden with these historic monuments we can begin to unlock their secrets and reveal the marvels of these ancient wonders of the world.

Great Pyramid of Giza:
The three pyramids of Giza have stood on a high plateau by the Nile for more than 4,500 years. These wonders were built by the ancient Egyptian King Khufu, his son, and his grandson. Khufu's Great Pyramid is the largest and most impressive of them all

Tower of London:
The oldest palace and fortress in Europe. Behind this facade of respectability lie dark blood-curdling tales of terror, sinister acts born of ruthless ambition. For over 900 years these monumental walls have overshadowed the city of London. Even today the Tower of London is one of the capital's most prominent landmarks.

The Colosseum:
A marvel of Roman engineering and the greatest amphitheatre ever built. This huge stadium was designed so that as many Romans as possible could watch the most cruel and violent games the world has ever seen. Thousands died here in the name of popular entertainment.

Stonehenge:
Deep in the heart of the English countryside lies what is possibly the oldest structure on Earth. This is Stonehenge. It was built by prehistoric man and yet amazingly this extraordinary monument is aligned with the cosmos. The arrangement of the stones can predict exactly when the sun and the moon eclipse, and on the longest day of the year, they line up precisely with the midsummer sunrise.

Great Wall of China:
Built across mountain ranges up to 8,000 feet high, the Great Wall of China is a feet of engineering unparalleled in the world. It extends over 4,500 miles from North Korea to the wastes of the Gobi Desert, the same distance as from Miami to the North Pole. The Great Wall of China is the longest manmade structure on the planet.

Easter Island Moai:
This is one of the most isolated places on Earth, yet every year 20,000 tourists make the journey here to see some of the strangest wonders of the world. Easter Island is over 2,000 miles from the nearest habitation in Chile, it's a place with a tragic history, where the events of the past almost destroyed an entire population. 887 gigantic statues dot the island.

Lost City of Palenque:
In the 18th century the Spanish priest was sent by his bishop to explore the dense jungle of Central America. Searching for new land to cultivate he stumbled upon some hauntingly beautiful ruins rising spectacularly out of the forest. This was the Lost City of Palenque.

#6 Apollo 11 Engine

We all remember the historic Apollo 11 Mission in 1969. Neil Armstrong saying the famous ’That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind’. Who can forget that? But, only a few know that the landing of the first men on the Moon was powered by a Saturn V rocket with five forceful engines that were dropped in the Atlantic Ocean and forgotten soon after. Forgotten, that is, until 4 years ago. Turns out, when you are super rich and buying a multimillion dollar yacht just doesn’t cut it, you finance a private expedition to find the 5 F-1 rocket engines. Jeff Bezos we are talking to you. It’s no wonder that Bezos, Amazon’s CEO and owner of an aerospace company that is working to develop a ‘space taxi’ successfully recovered two engines from the ocean floor.

#5 Lost Silver from World War II

In 1941, the SS Gairsoppa, a British merchant ship was sent from Calcutta with a precious cargo of 2,800 silver bars meant to boost Britain's war chest. After battling a low coal reserves and a heavy storm, the ship was forced to head for Galway Harbour where it was sunk by a German U-boat just 300 miles off the coast of Ireland. The SS Gairsoppa was found 70 years later, in 2011 by a US marine company cleverly named Odyssey. It took five years and a remotely-operated submarine to recover 48 tons of silver bullion from the shipwreck, making it the largest recovery of precious metal in maritime history. Are you calculating in your head how much that silver is worth? Let us make it easy for you. $55million. If you want a piece of that treasure, there are 20,000 silver coins edged with the name SS Gairsoppa waiting for you to buy them.

#4 Galleon San Jose

The Spanish Galleon San Jose sunk in a battle in June of 1708. He was carrying precious stones, silver and gold from South American countries that were colonized by the Spanish Empire, to finance a war against the British Empire. Known as the most valuable shipwreck in maritime history with an estimated worth of USD$1 billion, the San Jose was discovered 300 years later close to the city of Cartagena, Colombia. Among treasure hunters, he will be remembered as the Holy Grail of Shipwrecks.

#3 The Lost Egyptian City of Heracleion

The city of Thonis, or Heracleion as the ancient Greeks used to call it, flourished from the 6th to the 4th century BC. The Egyptian city sank in the Mediterranean Sea somewhere between 3rd and 2nd century AD leaving no trail or evidence. For centuries people thought that Heracleion was nothing more than a legend, mythical city that was visited by Helen of Troy and her lover. Thankfully, the city was discovered in 2000, submerged under 150 feet of water in the Bay of Aboukir. Ever since, scientists discovered thousands of small and giant statues, 64 ships, stones inscribed in Ancient Egyptian and limestone sarcophagi. Parts of the city have been excavated, giving us a glimpse into its wealth and importance in the ancient times.

#2 Antikythera Mechanism

The Ancient Greeks gave us philosophy, mathematics, theater, the Olympic Games and much more. Long before Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, the Greeks gave us the world’s first analog computer A.K.A The Antikythera Mechanism. This sophisticated mechanical device was discovered in 1900 near Antikythera Island after it has been in the Aegean Sea for nearly 2000 years. Scientists believe that it was used as an ‘ancient computer’ capable of calculating astronomical events. This scientific artefact was so well made that nothing close to his complexity was seen in Europe until Medieval Times, merely thousand years later.

#1 Underwater River

The Underwater River is a discovery straight out of Ripley's Believe It or Not! The man behind this discovery is not Sponge Bob but a photographer with a passion for diving named Anatoly Beloshchin. He traveled to the Mexican province of Yucatan to witness an ‘Angelita’ or scientifically speaking a deep sinkhole called cenote formed as a result of limestone bedrock collapse. Overtime, the cenotes are filled with rain water and the fresh water meets the salty groundwater eventually. By having different levels of density, the two waters layer, creating a breathtaking image.

Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Described

Watch these descriptions of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. These Seven Wonders were constructed between 2500 BC and 280 BC, and today only one of the Seven Wonders has survived in the Great Pyramid of Giza. The list of the Seven Wonders was not established until the Renaissance and it consists of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, and the Great Pyramid of Giza. This video contains brief summaries of each of the Seven Wonders, along with imagery of what they might've looked like.

9. Sacsayhuamán
Our planet has many astounding relics from the past that we still don’t understand how people from that era were able to make them. To explain missing links, people claim that ancient civilizations must have had help from interstellar friends!
The fortress of Sacsayhuamán (or Sexy Woman if you don’t speak Spanish), is a fortress believed to have been built by aliens. Located in the Peruvian Andes, just outside the old Inca capital of Cusco, this fortress is estimated to be over 1,000 years old. The walls are built out of enormous stones that seem to be carved with laser-like precision. The rocks are stacked together like a jigsaw puzzle and are estimated to weigh almost 360 tons each. Not just that, to build the fortress, the rocks were hauled for more than 32 km before being lifted and placed with such immaculate perfection. Sacsayhuamán continues to baffle the scientific community.
Archeologists have tried to debunk the mystery of this alien wonder. It turns out the Inca Empire had already mastered engineering skills way before other civilizations rose to prominence. They built several fortified complexes for astrological readings and to keep track of calendars. As to how the Incas moved the stones remains a mystery. However, of course there are many theories based on the traces of evidence discovered across the sites. According to one popular belief, the Incas had developed a rope and lever system, which could move very large stones. Even modern day machinery would have a hard time transporting these intricate masonry designs. How exactly did they do it? We still don’t know for sure so until then, just turn on Ancient Aliens on the History Channel and they will have an explanation for everything!

8. Baalbek, Lebanon
Baalbek is a city in Lebanon with a population of around 83,000 people. It is famous for being the home of one of the most mysterious ruins of the Roman Empire. It turns out that a 2,000 year old Roman temple to Jupiter was built on top of 3 stone blocks weighing almost 1,000 tons each. In the quarry, there are two gigantic stones that never made it into the temple.
One of the stones, known as the “Stone of the South”, is the largest worked monolith on Earth, weighing in at 1,242 tons.
Right across from it also lies the “Stone of the Pregnant Woman” which is also estimated to be around 1000 tons. The true origin of this site still remains unknown, however, what is more baffling is how these stones got there in the first place before being precisely set. Numerous stories have been going around the town for centuries. According to one story, there once lived a pregnant woman who tricked people into believing she would share the secret of how to move the giant stones only if the people provided her with food until she gave birth. Some say the stone grants the woman who touches it with fertility. Others say that a giant genie was responsible for moving and cutting the stones. And the rest? You already know the answer. It was aliens.
The stones are cut very precisely, and the origins of the sacred spot underneath the Temple of Jupiter are shrouded in mystery. It could have been built by the Phoenicians or rumor has it that Cain himself may have built it with enslaved giants. They were placed extremely accurately and why they would use such enormous blocks isn’t clear.

7. Easter Island Heads
These iconic heads are known as Moai by the Rapa Nui people who carved the figures between 1100 to 1680 AD (or CE, whichever you want to call it). Considering there are so many of them and the fact that they are so huge, a lot of people actually believe they were built by aliens. Not just that, they are located on one of the most remote places on Earth, which today is inhabited by only a few people. Almost 1,000 statues have been documented, which on average weigh up to around 10 tons each. However, there are many that were not completed that weigh over 200 tons!! What’s even more astounding is that an archaeological expedition discovered that the massive heads that we see on the surface, have full bodies underneath them.

Jewish History - Evidence Of Ancient Israel - Full Documentary

Documentary on the history of Judaism, the Bible (Torah/Tanakh) and the Jewish people of Israel. Using the latest archaeological evidence from the stables of Ramses ll to little-known ancient Egyptian texts, Egyptologist and Bible Archaeologist show that Israel did in fact exist and had a presence in ancient Egypt.
The Bible's Buried Secrets is the title of a NOVA program that stirred controversy even before its first airing on PBS, on November 18, 2008. According to the program's official website: The film presents the latest archeological scholarship from the Holy Land to explore the beginnings of modern religion and the origins of the Hebrew Bible, also known as the Old Testament. This archeological detective story tackles some of the biggest questions in biblical studies: Where did the ancient Israelites come from? Who wrote the Bible, when, and why? How did the worship of one God—the foundation of modern Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—emerge?”

Ancient Artifacts That Are Still Shrouded in Controversy Today

The evidence that there is more to ancient history than we were taught in school is coming in thick and fast. Find out about cities that are many thousands of years old, about artifacts that curiously resemble modern inventions and customs and traditions that have their beginnings before modern civilizations! There are some great mysteries in this world that cannot be explained, as you will see with some of these are truly impossible artifacts.

We will look at details respecting the most awe: ancient pyramids, caves, artifacts, and ruins. Technology associated with these relics are then the object of investigation. Rationale remained fact-based against many of the pre-existing theories for the accomplishments of our ancient ancestors. Their accomplishments and disappearances could have realistically been a result of technologies that to us would appear to be supernatural in nature or origin!

hroughout history civilizations have been born and lost countless times. In modern times through our accumulation of knowledge, anthropologists and archaeologists have tried to piece together a timeline of the rise and fall of civilizations.

However, through new discoveries and the hard work of many researchers, more previously unknown civilizations are being looked at in a new light. All of these are ancient and they are a sign of the major probability that we do not know as much as we would like about our history as we believe we do.

Ancient Megaliths That Will Challenge Everything You Know About History

Here we look at astonishing megalithic structures and ancient technology that continues to baffle mainstream archaeologists to this day. Demonstrates that the use of keystone cuts with metal clamps poured into them to secure megalithic construction, this was an advanced technology used all over the world. Only power tools could have made the intricate articulation and drill holes found in extremely hard granite and basalt blocks in Bolivia and Peru, and that the megalith builders had to have had advanced methods for moving and stacking gigantic blocks of stone, some weighing over 100 tons.

Examines the amazing stonecutting at Puma Punku, a site neighboring the ancient ruins of Tiwanaku near Lake Titicaca in Bolivia. He looks at whether the so-called Inca walls-found in Cuzco and at other sites such as Sacsayhuaman, Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu-were really made by the Incas. The evidence seems to support the idea that they were actually constructed by a far older culture.
