7. New Human Species
Biologists all over the world were intrigued upon hearing the 2015 discovery of a new species of human, Homo Naledi, allowing for an ever clearer picture of our ancient ancestry. The findings were unveiled deep in an underground cave in South Africa and is considered one of the greatest collection of human remains ever unearthed. So far, it is known that this species of human grew to an average height of 5 feet and had a brain no larger than an orange. The way the bones in the South African cave were arranged suggests that these human ancestors ritualistically buried their dead, giving scientists a glimpse into our cultural past.

6. Bionic Lens
While still in the testing stage, the founder of Ocumetics Technology Corp may have stumbled upon a revolutionary technology that could augment the way humans perceive the world. A new bionic contact lens will give wearers an ability to see the world with stronger than 20/20 vision. Some subjects, who have already tried the lens themselves, claim that they not only see better than ever before but have identified a unique spectrum of colors unfamiliar to the unaided eye. Is this perhaps the first step in the direction of a new era of superhumans?

5. Harder Than Diamond
Scientists may have recently discovered a substance harder than diamond, Q-carbon. What gives diamonds their excellent hardness are the chemical bonds that hold them together. The carbon in diamonds is held together by incredibly tight chemical bonds at the microscopic level, giving diamonds their prominent hardness. By the manipulation of carbon atoms, scientists were able to augment their chemical bonds, producing a material that is potentially 60 times harder than diamond. While this substance is still being experimented on, it is a potential prospect for the future of cheap, efficient technologies.

4. First Mammals
Researchers from the University of Edinburgh have discovered an ancient species of mammals that survived the notorious extinction of the dinosaurs over 65 million years ago. The reason this find is so significant is that it gives us a glimpse at how mammals began to rule the world previously dominated by their cold-blooded counterparts. The mammal is thought to have been a plant-eater closely resembling a modern beaver. Once the dinosaurs were eliminated these beaver-like creatures began to flourish, given that they were no longer victims of dinosaur predators. Because these little guys were able to withstand the destruction that wrecked havoc on the dinosaurs, an array of mammals, including our ancestors, were finally able to leave their mark on the world.

3. Whale Gene Mapping
Gene mapping is starting to look less like a theoretical nicety and more like an applied science with this new aquatic discovery. Scientists have finally discovered why Bowhead Whales are able to live to 200 years old by remapping their entire genome. By comparing the genome of Bowhead Whales with the genome of other mammals with a less impressive lifespan, scientists were able to point out marked differences. Bowhead longevity is due to its genes’ effectiveness in repairing gene deterioration, which is the cause of cancer and other ailments known to cut human life short. By further studying this animal’s genes, scientists may finally be able to restore our own faulty genetic system, substantially lengthening our lives.

2. Second Earth
NASA has recently confirmed their discovery of a possible second Earth. Kepler-452b orbits its sun in what scientists call the “Goldilocks Zone,” which is the habitable region in space, not too far or close to the sun, necessary for the possibility of life to flourish. The new planet appears to have a rocky surface as well as liquid water, which is another key ingredient for life to subsist. Although not much is known about if there is life beyond Earth, it makes sense to take notice of planets similar to our own.

1. Animal Re-animation
Scientists have always been intrigued by the prospect of re-animating creatures that have been extinct for many years. While bringing a dinosaur back to life would be kind of cool, bringing a Wooly Mammoth back to life would be just as cool, and that is just what scientists are trying to do. Because Wooly Mammoths and Saber-Toothed Tigers have only been extinct for tens of thousands of years, unlike the millions of years dinosaurs have been extinct, intact DNA samples are much easier to find. Scientists believe it is possible to recreate these extinct beasts by cloning them with DNA and tissue samples, which have been found, over the years, preserved in ice.

Scientific Discoveries That Made 2019 a Fantastic Year

2020 has been a very strange year so far, don't you think so? One might even beg to rewind this year and go back to the previous one. So let's remember, what an amazing year 2019 was. And it truly was, as 2019 was full of mind-boggling discoveries and scientific breakthroughs. Some of the discoveries were so unexpected that it's hard to believe they actually happened.

For example, scientists found out that if people started having 6 fingers, the brains would easily adapt to it. Also, in 2019 a group of scientists grew human taste cells in a lab, they actually discovered those had an ability to smell, just like our noses. Meanwhile, outside of our planet some unusual things happened as well. The supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way Galaxy lit up twice as brightly as usual. What a bright year indeed!

10. The Ulfberht Swords
Ulfberht swords were the weapon of choice of the Vikings, along with other tribes around northern Europe. They had a long, double edged blade, and a straight crossbar over the grip. There are only about 170 still known to exist today, each of which dates to between the 9th and 11th centuries! And the cool thing is they have the tell-tale inscription in the blade itself.

9. The Drepanosaurus
Whenever a new fossil is found, it gives further clues as to the evolution of animals, and of those that once roamed the earth. Every now and then, though, something is found that makes no sense at all in terms of scientific understanding, and requires a complete re-think of what is taken as fact. This is exactly what’s happening with a little known creature, the Drepanosaurus.

8. Rat Kings
The Rat Kings are a rare phenomena from the animal kingdom that is so bizarre, no-one is entirely sure how it happens. You may have seen one before, but if you haven’t- they really are something quite unusual. They have been a part of legend for centuries, and are formed when a number of rats become attached by the tail.

7. The Martian Meteorite
In 1984, a meteorite fell to earth, something that in itself is no unusual thing. But this one, known as ALH84001, was found to hold secrets that no-one has been able to explain. The 4.1 billion-year-old rock is thought to have originated on Mars, having been dislodged during a collision, and floated through space until it fell into earth’s atmosphere. Unlike other similar specimens, the surface of this rock had something very unusual- what appeared to be the signs of fossilised bacteria.

6. The Longyou Grottoes
The Longyou Grottoes are a series of underground structures near the village of Shiyan Beicun, in the Zhejiang province in China. They are thought to be at least 2000 years old, but scientists and researchers have no idea how they were built, what they were used for, or even who was responsible for them.

5. What was the first dinosaur?
Since we first realized that dinosaurs roamed the earth, palaeontologists have been trying to understand the full range of creatures that once lived, with particular interest revolving around which was the first dinosaur to ever live.

4. The Nampa Stone Doll
The Nampa figurine looks like any other that has been made by an ancient civilisation. The mystery surrounding this one, though, is how it came to be in the place where it was found. It was discovered in 1889 near the town of Nampa in Idaho. Workers were searching for water, and dug a well, which involved drilling a borehole to 295 feet.

3. The Piri Reis Map
Today we take maps for granted. Satellite technology combined with the work of cartographers over the years, plus Google of course, have created incredibly detailed depictions of our planet. All we have to do is use our smartphone! This wasn’t always the way, clearly, and maps from centuries ago were just kind of close approximations based on ship voyages.

2. The Voynich Manuscript
The 600 year old Voynich manuscript is often thought of as being the most mysterious book that has ever been written, and still, to this day, scientists aren’t able to explain what’s inside.

1. Dinosaur and Human Footprints
The final mystery is one which calls into question the idea that humans weren’t around at the time of the dinosaurs, because their footprints have been found side by side. The discovery was made in the Paluxy river, Texas, where hundreds of dinosaur footprints have been found. Their foot impressions were perfectly preserved by the river bed.

10. Zhang Heng's Seismoscope
Zhang Heng was considered the Leonardo Da Vinci of ancient China. Almost 2,000 years ago he created the first earthquake sensing device. Somehow, this instrument could sense the inertia of an earthquake long before seismographs came to be.
It was said to have been possessed by a supernatural force or a Genie that would control it since nobody knew how it actually worked! Here comes the fun part, the body of the instrument consisted of a vase with eight mobile dragon heads, each representing a direction on the compass. Whenever an earthquake came, the dragon mouth would drop a small ball into a toad’s mouth cast underneath, indicating the direction the seismic wave was travelling.
Over the years, many have tried to replicate the object but even today, nobody knows the exact mechanism inside the closed vessel. A few have proposed a simple-pendulum system inside is responsible for this unexplained function but how it truly works? Nobody knows!

9. The Naga Fireballs
Every year, this rare phenomenon is said to occur at the Mekong River, bordering Laos and Thailand.
Every October on a full moon, people gather on the river banks to watch fiery, red spheres glowing hundreds of feet into the air. While there is no clear scientific explanation, these fireballs have inspired myths and legends for centuries. Sometimes as many as 800 spheres will rise up out of the water. The locals believe that the river is inhabited by a Naga, a supernatural and benevolent water snake that puffs out these fireballs, hence the name. It also usually happens on the last day of Buddhist Lent, on the 11th full moon of the year so the serpent may be puffing out these fireballs as a ritual to call back their holy leader Buddha to descend down to the earth. The tentative scientific explanation is that the river gives off methane gas that bubbles to the surface and ignites. However, the Mekong River does not provide those conditions naturally, and gas does not burn red and shoot up into the air. I think we should go and see for ourselves!!!! What are you guys doing next October??

8. The Taos Hum
Taos, New Mexico is known for its art galleries, ski resorts, and Native American culture. But deep down there is a spooky secret. Some people, but not all, can hear a frequent humming sound, known as “The Taos Hum”. In the early 1990s, the inhabitants of this town were so disturbed that they filed a petition to Congress.
Congress ordered an investigative study and placed acoustic instruments all around the town to record any rumbling noise. Initially, a few disturbances were recorded, but they were falsely mistaken for the local electromagnetic perturbations. After that, no sound could ever be detected, and the study was concluded as having inadequate evidence. Joe Mullins from the University of New Mexico, surveyed residents and discovered that about 2% of the population could hear the hum. An interesting thing however, was that the hum was never reported as being the same sound. Sometimes it was a buzz, other times it was a whir or clearly a hum.
Many conspiracy theories exist, and some actually believe it was a military experiment conducted by the agencies. The hum still remains unexplained.

7. The Giant Stone Balls of Costa Rica
Deep down in the dense jungles of Costa Rica, a very interesting discovery was made in the late 1930s. A fruit company, while looking for new lands for banana plantations, found perfectly spherical shaped stone balls, carved to immaculate perfection. About 300 spheres were found, ranging from a few inches to as much as 7 feet in diameter. The biggest ones were reported to weigh up to 16 tons, which is so heavy that a modern-day bulldozer would have a hard time moving it. Nobody is certain as to who made them, how old they are, or for what purpose they might have been made. What’s even more mysterious is that the volcanic rock they’ve been made out of, does not exist anywhere in the vicinity. Given the weight of the larger stones, transporting them seems to be virtually impossible for more primitive civilizations.
A few of the stones have been blasted to see if there was gold or other valuable relics inside.

5. Pyramid in Indonesia

Could Indonesia be home to world’s oldest pyramid and not Egypt? Also known as the Gunung Padang site, this is the largest megalithic site in southwestern asia if estimations are correct. Egypt’s oldest pyramid was built over 5,000 years ago but a mysterious structure found in West Java could have been built between 6,500 years ago. Although it was discovered about 100 years ago, new technologies seem add more unbelievable detail. It’s covered by grass now but underneath you can see it’s possible these igneous rocks were maneuvered in a fashion that created a pyramid by ancient people. Many have felt that the site has been improperly handled by locals and the investigation is not accurate. Many have compared it to Asia’s Machu picchu but is relatively unknown about. Some don’t think it’s a pyramid at all and feel as though it’s a volcanic structure. What were these stones moved with and for what what purpose were they moved?

4. Oton Death Mask
This golden death mask we see in the photo was discovered in the 1960’s in the Philipines and is believed to have been made from the late 14 century to the early 15 century AD. Nothing like this has been recovered previously from this country. This was most likely imported from China to the city of Oton which was a bustling trade hub at its time so ideas and traditions were easily shared to the citizens of this city.

3. 32,000 year old Plant
The oldest plant in the world has been regenerated or closed after a seed was found buried in ice by a squirrel near the banks of the Kolyma River. It is the oldest plant by about 30,000 years. The seeds were frozen in ice with some immature seeds holding on to viable plant material that could be used to grow. This would suggest that permafrost can retain valuable details in artifacts of the past and many items found in this frozen soil can be extremely useful to archaeologists. It’s believed that the rodent was trying to store the seed for eating later. Other seeds nearby were found that would suggest that the creature purposely damaged the seeds so they wouldn’t grow, while these ones were not damaged but frozen.

2. Ancient Stone Balls of Costa Rica
Also known as Los Bolas, over 300 of these perfect spheres have been placed in western Costa Rica and the reason for their existence is still uncertain. These stone balls can be over 2 meters in diameter and weigh up to 15 tons! Most are sculpted from gabbro which is an igneous rock similar to basalt. They are also found in limestone and sandstone. What do you think these mysterious stones were for? Some claim they lead to the chief’s compound. This wasn’t the only place where archaeologists have found mysterious stone spheres. Also found in Bosnia, there’s a forest nicknamed the Forest of spheres which many believe is remnants of an ancient civilization, possible the one who built the bosnian pyramid!

1. Roman Coin in Japan
In September 2016, Japanese Archaeologists managed to uncover Roman coins in the ruins of an old castle, across the world. They came up with 10 bronze and copper coins that dated back to 400 to 300 AD in the Katsuren Castle, located in Okinawa. This fortress was once the residence of a feudal lord who had extraordinary wealth, but was he capable of trade routes to Rome? This was the first time researchers have found Roman coins in Japan, and there is no known link between these two civilizations during this period of time. Some believe that the coins reached the islands at some point in the middle ages when there was more contact between the west and the east. X-ray analysis of the coins proved that they were Roman when they could see roman letters in the results. The image also showed Emperor Constantine the First and a soldier holding a spear.
