Spencer Wells - The past, present and future of personal genomics - Frontiers Forum 2019

Spencer Wells is a pioneer of the consumer genomics industry. In his talk at the Frontiers Forum 2019, he discussed today's era where more and more people have their DNA sequence, or that of a relative, online - and the privacy and other issues surrounding this.

Spencer Wells launched the National Geographic’s Genographic Project, founded Insitome which provides genetic tests revealing the story of people’s ancestry, and is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Texas at Austin. The Frontiers Forum is held in Montreux, Switzerland. See all speakers:

Spencer Wells on George's Deep Ancestry

As Director of the Genographic Project, population geneticist Spencer Wells is in the process of charting new knowledge about the migratory history of the human species. His team has collected DNA samples from half a million people around the world - including George's! In this clip, Spencer shares some rather surprising test results with our unknowing (and admittedly nervous) host.

The Indiana Jones of genetics, Spencer Wells, tells George what he's learned about the origins of humanity, and more specifically, George's own origins.

Dr. Spencer Wells, The Genographic Project

In this video, Dr. Spencer Wells explains to Burnaby South Secondary students how scientists unlocked the key to answer the question, Where are we all from? Mapping the human genome has provided scientific evidence that the entire population of the world shares a single male ancestor.
The goal of the National Geographic Society's Genographic Project - starting in 2006 - is to construct a family tree of all of the world's citizens. Scientists with Dr. Wells have been mapping out the migration paths of our ancient ancestors.
Dr. Wells outlines how we can support his fascinating research and learn more about our own origins at the same time. Visit for more background and current information.

SLU Bander Center Event: You are Unique! The Future of Personal Genomics

You are Unique! The Future of Personal Genomics A Discussion with Spencer Wells, PhD and CEO of Insitome (9/29/2018)
