3 Types of Suits: Off the Rack vs. Made to Measure vs. Bespoke

When you need a new suit, you have lots of different options these days. There are more brands to choose from than ever before. This is great, but it can be a little overwhelming.

I want to help you choose the best option for your needs and budget. For the typical gentleman, here’s what I would suggest:

First, try to find something that fits well off the rack. Assume it will need a little tailoring, as this is totally normal with suits. Set aside $50-100 for basic alterations, such as getting the pants hemmed, sleeves shortened and jacket taken in.

If you can’t find anything that fits well enough off the rack, consider going custom. For most guys, this means made-to-measure. If money isn’t an issue - and/or you’re willing and able to invest in a great suit that you’ll wear for years - bespoke is definitely the way to go.

Prioritize companies that have showrooms (or fit shops) near you. It’s much better to go get your measurements taken, in person and by a professional, than to submit your own measurements.

If you can’t find a local option, it’s time to go the online MTM route. Of all the companies I’ve tried out, my experience has been with Oliver Wicks and Black Lapel.

If I had to pick, I’d choose Oliver Wicks. But please understand that I’ve had a lot of time to dial in my measurements with them. Black Lapel did a great job on the first (and only) suit they made for me.

#bespoke #madetomeasure #notsponsored

Do you want to buy a suit, pair of shoes or any other items of clothing?

If so, chances are you have seen the fancy terms used to describe the items you were looking for but the sales person could never really explain what that meant.

In this video, I help you to understand the difference between RTW, OTR, MTO, MTM and bespoke and I point out what you should do if things are unclear or if someone claims to be a bespoke tailor, shoemaker etc. and how you can find out if he or she really is what they claim there are.

Otherwise you may end up overpaying for something that is not truly what it claims to be.

No matter if you buy ready to wear, off the rack, made to order, made to measure or bespoke this video will provide you with the answers.

00:00 Introduction

Between the British, Italian, and American suit styles, each has its own unique geographic characteristics; in particular, the Italian suit has regional variations with different qualities. Some suits also contain hybrid elements of multiple tailoring traditions.

01:05 The American Suit
01:41 The English Suit
08:32 The Italian Suit

So why did we choose these three? Well, we're in America and if you asked John Doe on the street where a proper suit should be made chances are they'll say Italy or England. So how do the Italian, the English, and the American school of tailoring compare? Well, there's certain broad strokes but a suit from the Milan is different from a suit from Rome and it is from let's say, Sicily or Naples. The same is true for English suits, maybe in a less extreme version. A suit from Savile Row is very distinctly British, a suit from Manchester or Dover is probably not as refined and just a little different in the way it looks. While the tailoring industry in the US is nowadays limited to a few centers where they're still made, you can still have the classic sack suit style as popularized by Brooks Brothers. Of course, suits often contain hybrid elements and different varieties but we'll try to shed some light on them so you can clearly see if a suit is Italian, English, or American. Of course, let's not forget that the suit by Giorgio Armani from the 80s or 90s looks very different from an Italian suit today.

So which suit style is best? Obviously, that is a very subjective question. Personally, I think there are interesting elements in all of them and I often like to mix them and not just use one of them. I like to have the typical British pinstripe suit that is businesslike but maybe have a slightly softer canvas because overall, I like softer canvas suits. Sometimes though, having a really heavy padded canvas that makes you look like a Cavalry officer is desirable too. I don't think you have to just pick one thing and just wear that but you can develop your own style.

At the end of the day, what a good suit will always do is take features that are asymmetrical in your body and balance them out so it looks overall harmonious. If you're interested in a more youthful casual look, definitely go with an Italian style. If you want something a little more seasoned and mature, go with a British style.

Learn the Difference Between Ready to Wear, Made to Measure and Bespoke.

Transcript:

If you’re confused about the difference between ready-to-wear, made-to-measure, and bespoke suits, believe me, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we field here at Harry Rosen, so today we’re going to set the record straight.

Let’s start with the most widely available option: ready to wear.

Ready-to-wear or off-the-rack suits are made to one of a designer’s signature patterns. Though offered in standard sizes, minor alterations are possible, so most men can find a ready-to-wear garment that fits them well.

A made-to-measure suit is where a greater number of measurements and several personalization opportunities truly begin to reflect your individual taste. Working from one of a designer’s signature patterns, a Clothing Advisor will take measurements specific to your posture and build before noting your choices for the fabric your suit is constructed from, the look of the jacket lining, the style of the vents and pockets, and button options. Back in the designer’s factory, the suit’s standard pattern is tailored accordingly, and an additional fitting is typically scheduled to fine-tune for fit and comfort.

With a bespoke suit, a pattern is designed specifically for you from scratch, with special emphasis on your almost-limitless creative options. You select the fabric and lining; the style of the lapels, vents and pockets; the type of buttons and thread; plus a host of other fanciful touches that will make your suit look and feel completely your own. For bespoke suits, two to three fittings are the norm.

And there you have it. If seeing is believing, consider an appointment with a Harry Rosen Clothing Advisor. We’d be happy to guide you to a personalized look that’s unmistakably yours.

And be sure to subscribe, share or like us before you go!
