10 Best Beaches in Sri Lanka - East/South/West Coast (Tropical Escape #2)

In this episode I show you the best beaches in Sri Lanka from the west coast over the south coast to the lesser know east coast - along the way we sample some street food and checkout the wildlife.
My Guide for Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka is a year-round holiday destination with two monsoon seasons and is home to some incredible beaches on both sides of the island. If you want to go to the south and west coast of Sri Lanka the best time to visit is from December to April. For the east coast the time between April and August is best.

We start our journey in Beruwala and Bentota, this very long sand beach is without any doubt one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka and only a 2h drive from the capital. The next stops are the beaches of Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna close to Galle.

Further down south you can find Mirissa, a relaxed little town which is a popular starting point for whale watching, too. Afterwards it’s time to spot some wildlife in the Yala National Park which has also a beach...but swimming is not allowed, so we’ll go for a leopard safari instead.

The east coast of Sri Lanka is still fairly unknown, therefore I decided to show you this part of the island more in-depth starting with Arugam Bay, a popular surf spot. Pasikudah is a longer drive to the north which is totally worth it - the locals even state it is the most beautiful beach in Sri Lanka!

Our last stop is Trincomalee in the north east of the country with its wide beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli. A short boat ride off the main land you should visit Pigeon island which has not only a beautiful beach but an incredible maritime life…so make sure to bring some snorkeling gear!

This part of the trip was executed within 2weeks by using buses, trains, cars and a domestic flight (Trincomalee-Colombo) - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do on the coast of Sri Lanka:
- Beruwala
- Bentota
- Hikkaduwa
- Unawatuna
- Mirissa
- Yala & Yala National Park
- Arugam Bay
- Batticaloa & Kattankudy
- Kumana National Park
- Kudumbigala sanctuary
- Pasikuda
- Trincomalee
- Uppuveli
- Nilaveli
- Pigeon Island

---About the Tropical Escape---
Sri Lanka is an island country in South East Asia which has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. After a 30 year long civil war which ended in 2009 the diverse country is now opening up more an more for tourism. The goal of this series is to give you an introduction to the country and the neighboring Maldives.

I'm excited to share all my experiences in Sri Lanka & the Maldives over the course of the next 3-4 weeks with you. In the next episodes I will take you to the south and east coast of Sri Lanka - we will go on an leopard safari, will eat the local street food and enjoy the beaches in Trincomalee as well as Arugam Bay.

The production of this series was supported by:

--- my travel equipment ---
insurance
packing list
Online Language Course

The whole trip was executed over the course of altogether 4 weeks. The Tropical Escape is a video series which sums up 2 trips to the region - one in 2014 (Sri Lanka) and the latest in 2016 (East Coast of Sri Lanka & The Maldives).

Galle, Sri Lanka Travel Guide // Lighthouse, Galle Fort and Gelato

Galle is a city in the far south of Sri Lanka, famous for its old town and its UNESCO World Heritage Status. We travelled to Galle as part of the #TBCasia Cinnamon Hotels Blogger Conference and awards.

I loved the old Dutch vibes, as it felt more like an old European town than a city in Asia. There are beautiful boutiques, galleries, restaurants, gelato shops and lots of interesting places to visit within Galle Old Fort.

Street Food in Sri Lanka - ULTIMATE FOOD TOUR - Egg Hoppers + Kottu Roti in Colombo, Sri Lanka!

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA - We went on an ultimate Sri Lankan street food tour of Colombo, starting from the outskirts of the city and working our way into the market, and all the way to the Galle Face coast. Colombo is a fantastic city, vibrant, and calm and relaxing all the at the same time, and an array of delicious food.

Breakfast roti - We started in the morning for a classic Sri Lankan food breakfast, roti, stuffed with egg, chopped up and topped with curry sauce and dall. It was delicious, especially followed with ginger tea. Total price - 200 LKR ($1.12)

Milano Hotel (Restaurant) - For lunch, Ruzaina and I went to eat at one of her favorite Sri Lankan local restaurants serving a mix of rice and curry. Highly recommended. Total price - 760 LKR ($4.24)

New Paris Hotel - One of my favorite Sri Lankan foods is hoppers, and more specifically egg hoppers - a combinations of rice flour batter and coconut milk, fried in a rounded skillet and topped with an egg. Egg hoppers - 40 LKR ($0.22) each

Pettah - We continued this Sri Lankan street food tour to Pettah, a busy business district of Colombo. We met up with Abram: to do some more eating.

Fruit - 100 LKR ($0.56) - First we stopped to eat some pickled and candied fruit. I especially liked the black pepper rub on some of the fruit like the pineapple.

Bombay Sweetmeat Mart - One of the popular local Sri Lankan things to eat in Pettah is faluda and samosas. Pretty good, but I’m not huge on faluda. Total price - 320 LKR ($1.79)

Intestines and chicken necks - 390 LKR ($2.18) - Next we stopped to eat intestines and tripe, and chicken necks. All of it was pretty tasty, my kind of snack.

Brains - 660 LKR ($3.68) - Next up on this Sri Lankan street food tour, we had a huge bite of brains, all of us.

Galle Face - Finally, to end this Sri Lankan food tour, we headed to the most iconic area of Colombo - Galle Face. In the evening you’ll find food vendors setting up, selling snacks and quick meals. Isso Vadai - 200 LKR ($1.12) - are fried little fritters of shrimp and crab, and it’s something you’ve got to try. I ended with special kottu roti - 600 LKR ($3.35).

It was a great time of eating Sri Lankan food. Special thank you to Ruzaina for taking me around:

Sri Lanka | Travel to Ella, Unawatuna, Mirissa & Dikwella

Traveling Sri Lanka was an absolute pleasure! Flying the drone in such beautiful landscape is unreal! We’ve visited different places, like Ella, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Kandy & Dikwella. Sri Lanka offers lots of diversity. Surfing at the southern coastline. Strolling over stunning beaches. Hiking in the inland highlands. Doing safari tours while seeing elephants and other wildlife. And taking one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. Add to this the friendliness of the Sri Lankan people and the extremely cheap prices of transportation and you’ll conclude that Sri Lanka is a perfect place for traveling.

My friend and I landed in Colombo, the commercial capital city of Sri Lanka. Then we traveled down south by train to Hikkaduwa. The train drives directly next to the ocean which gives a beautiful sight while being on the move. After finding out that the surf in Hikkaduwa was not that great, we moved to Unawatuna a little bit more East. Unawatuna is a perfect spot if you like surfing and are beginner, it has some good en consistent waves coming in. The place also has some of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beaches.

After enjoying some days of surfing and beaching in Unawatuna we continued our way to Mirissa further East. Although this is quite a nice place with some beautiful spots, we found it a little bit too touristy and decided to stay only one night in Mirissa and travel further East to Dikwella. This place is a little bit less touristy but has some very beautiful beaches too. We chilled a lot and also tried out our newly bought drone, the DJI Mavic Pro, which was a lot of fun. Sri Lanka is obviously a perfect place to fly a drone. Capturing those stunning spots from a different angle is just magnificent.

We then continued our journey to one of the many national parks that Sri Lanka has. Udawalawe national park is known about the elephant safari tours. It’s always a great experience to see such big and wild elephants up close. Udawalawe furthermore has not that much to offer so after a day of elephant spotting we took the local bus further up north and traveled to Ella.

Ella is just a wonderful place. This place in the highlands of Sri Lanka has some great hiking to offer. We walked up Little Adam’s Peak and played around with the drone on top of the hills, which was super fun! The famous Nine Arches Bridge is also situated in Ella. This iconic bridge has nine huge arches (obviously) and lays between two railway stations making sure that trains can go back and forth. Besides Little Adam’s Peak, you can also climb on the top of Ella Rock which is a little bit harder than Little Adam’s Peak, but definitely worthwhile.

For many Ella is also the destination from or point of departure to Kandy. The train ride between Ella and Kandy is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, passing by many tea farms and just breathtaking nature. After Kandy we traveled back down south to Unawatuna to do some more surfing before we unfortunately had to leave Sri Lanka. But we’re both sure that we will come back to this awesome county!

Sri Lanka Train Vlog | Day Trip Tips (Galle Koggala)

Hopping aboard a Sri Lankan Train is a MUST for any visitor to the country. Not only are their rail journeys epically beautiful and famously named the most scenic in the world, they are also crazy hella-fun! I had my transportation sorted so instead of it being my means of travel, I did a day trip to experience the train, from Galle to Koggala and back again. This was a perfect distance to enjoy the train and the lovely countryside (the Weligama to Koggala trip would have also been perfect but it worked out better for my schedule on my last day in Sri Lanka as you'll see).
#train #srilanka #trainvideo

My Top Tips:
1. Check the amount stamped on your ticket before paying. The guy behind the counter charged me 50 Rupees on my Galle to Koggala trip and I didn't realise it cost only 40 Rupees until I bought the return in Koggala! Well, then I also saw the footage I shot from the Galle station where it clearly says 40 but I hadn't noticed with all the excitement and anticipation I had for the ride sadly.
2. Spend time in the open door but hold on if you're standing! I felt a childlike glee in that doorway that sitting down just can't deliver.
3. Get off and explore the back streets if you day trip to Koggala, it shows a quieter side of real life there. And avoid the touristy fake fishermen on stilts who perform for money at the beach.

Sea Planes are also a MUST in Sri Lanka, check out my Kandy to Koggala flight with Cinnamon Air here:

Dambulla (Town in Sri Lanka)

Sri Lanka is such a beautiful country. I went to 3 cities there; Galle, Dambulla & Colombo. Dambulla is my favourite one. Its actually a big town. I went to the Golden Temple of Dambulla, it's a World Heritage Site. If you want to go there ever, be prepared for so many steps to climb up. The 2nd famous place was Minneriya National Park. I mostly saw the elephants there, a very touristy place. Overall it was a tough journey. The 3rd one was Sigiriya. It's an ancient rock fortress, really difficult to climb but in the end it gives you the nice view from the top. I also visited other small cafes & restaurants. Please have a look & give your honest feedback & special thanks to all of my friends who were there with me on this beautiful journey. Sharukh, Uzair, Saqlain, Umer & Danish love you guys XOXO
