iOS (formerly iPhone OS) is a handheld OS developed and propagated by Apple Inc.
Originally unveiled in 2007 for the I-phone, it is often extended to guide other Apple devices like the Ipod Itouch (September 2007), iPad (January 2010), iPad Mini (November 2012) and second-era Apple TV forth (September 2010). Unlike Google's Android and Microsoft's Win Phone, Apple doesn't license iOS for setup on non-Apple hardware.

As of October 2013, Apple's App Store featured more than 1 million iOS programs, 500,000 of which were optimized for iPad. These programs have jointly been downloaded more than 60 billion instances. It had a 21% share of the smart-phone mobile operating system units shipped in the fourth-quarter of 2012, behind Google's Android.

The interface of iOS is based on the notion of direct manipulation, using multi-contact gestures. Interface handle parts include sliders, switches, and buttons. Interaction with the OS contains gestures such as swipe, tap, emergency, and reverse pinch, all of which have unique definitions within the context of the iOS operating system and its multi-touch-interface.

Important variations of iOS are introduced per annum. The present release, iOS 7, was released on September 18, 2013. In iOS, there are four abstraction layers: Center OS layer, the Core Services level, the Media layer|the Media level, the Core Services level, the Center OS layer}, as well as the Cocoa Touch layer|the Cocoa Touch layer, the Core Services level, the Media layer, along with the Core OS level}. The current variant of the OS (iOS 7.0.6), dedicates 1-1.5 GB of the device's flash memory for the method partition, using roughly 800 MB of that partition (fluctuating by product) for iOS itself. It runs in the I-phone 4 and later, 2nd-era iPad and after, all versions of the Ipadmini, and the 5th-generation iPod Touch.

iPhone application developer... and 6th grader | Thomas Suarez | TEDxManhattanBeach

Thomas Suarez is a 6th grade student at a middle school in the South Bay of Los Angeles. When Apple released the Software Development Kit (SDK), he began to create and sell his own applications. My parents, my friends and even the people at the Apple store all supported me, he says, and Steve Jobs inspired me. Thomas points out that it's hard to learn how to make an app. For soccer you could go to a soccer team ... but what if you want to make an app? He's started a club for fellow students at school, where he shares his knowledge of programming. Thomas articulates his vision that students are a valuable new technology resource to teachers, and should be empowered to offer assistance in developing the technology curriculum and also assist in delivering the lessons.

Thomas has been fascinated by computers and technology since before kindergarten. Recently, he's been focused on the development of applications for the iPhone, and has established his own company, CarrotCorp His most successful application is one he terms an anti-Justin-Bieber game called Bustin Jieber. It's is a variation on the Whac-a-Mole theme, he explains.
