My Journey with Android Development | Effort, Pain, and some Practical Tips

As I write this in July 2017, I can safely say that this year has been the most exciting and productive time of my life so far. I've had the pleasure of meeting and exchanging ideas with many incredible people, and slowly begun to see a small but dedicated group of Developers join me each week to help others and share knowledge.

Although meeting these people and taking up the responsibility of helping noobs navigate the Android platform (to whatever degree I can) is what gets me out of bed on time, there have also been some other realities which I've had to adjust to.

One such reality, is that a small number of people have begun to take interest in who I am as a person, perhaps based on the mood and persona which I adopt during my Livestreams. While that person is as much me as any other face I wear from day to day (we all wear faces in different situations), I never want anyone to think that me attempting to be smart and confident on camera means that I have had, and currently have, an easy time building my business and learning to code well.

The truth is that this journey for me has been a constant cycle of stress, disappointment, depression, and anger; counteracted by effort, discipline, small successes, and overwhelmingly positive (which still surprises me as this is the internet...) words and feedback from people of all backgrounds.

I don't wish to garner sympathy from anyone by sharing some of my difficulties along the path. Rather, I hope to share that putting forth and maintaining the effort to master your craft and build your dreams, however lacking, frustrating, and downright painful your current situation may be, is the one foot path that will never leave you.

Let go of the mind and body's complaints, refocus on the steps you can take which are directly in front of you, and begin to walk forward once more. All the rest is trivial.

Life of a Certification Student

JP Souchak introduces the Associate Android Developer (AAD) Certification by Google. The AAD Certification is intended for developers who can display typical skills of an entry-level Android developer. By earning the AAD Certification, developers can get recognized for their skills and advance their careers.

There are several steps in the process towards becoming an AAD: determining if you are ready, getting training if necessary, and then signing up and taking the exam. When you sign up for the exam, you pay a certification fee, download the exam, and work on it in Android Studio. The exam is a performance-based exam in which you will be asked to write and debug code.

After you are finished with the exam, you will upload it and it will be reviewed through a combination of machine and human grading. If you pass the exam, you move on to the Exit Interview. When you’ve passed both the exam and the Exit Interview, you will receive a digital badge that you can share with employers, on your resume, LinkedIn, Twitter, G+, and in your email signature.
