A Man with a Gun Lives Here, by Steve Snowden

Performed by line upon line
Matthew Teodori, Cullen Faulk, and Adam Bedell

Mvt. 1 - Be Prepared to Defend Yourself (0:14)
Mvt. 2 - There are Thieves About (3:07)
Mvt. 3 - A Man with a Gun Lives Here (5:52)

Most prevalent during the Great Depression, hobos were nomads who roamed the United States taking work wherever they could. In their extensive travels, hobos learned to leave notes for each other, giving information about places to camp, where to find a meal, or dangers that lay ahead. This unique Hobo Code was known to the brotherhood of freight train riders and used by all to keep the community of traveling workers safe, fed and in work.

Life as a hobo was difficult and dangerous. These vagabonds developed their own secret pictographic language to help other hobos to food, water and work or to direct them away from dangerous situations. The Hobo Code is a fascinating system of symbols understood among the hobo community. Because hobos weren't typically welcomed (and were often illiterate), messages left for others in the community had to be easy for hobos to read but look like little more than random markings to everyone else to maintain an element of secrecy. Scrawled in places where hobos were likely to convene, the purpose of the code was not only to help other hobos find what they needed, but to keep the entire lifestyle possible for everyone.

Each movement of this piece is based on one of these symbols and, just like those resourceful hobos, makes use of very limited materials. All activity is centered on a single bass drum. Other items utilized include steel plates, rubber balls, and a paper bag containing 3 lbs of loose buckshot.

Steven Snowden creates music for a diverse array of settings including theater, dance, film, multimedia installations, and the concert stage. He has focused much of his recent work on interdisciplinary collaboration and remains active as a performer in both acoustic and electronic mediums. Raised in rural Southwest Missouri, Snowden began composition studies in 2002, received his Masters degree in composition at the University of Colorado and DMA at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a co-founder/director of the Fast Forward Austin new music organization and his works have been performed by many outstanding ensembles at numerous festivals and concert series across five continents.

He has recently received awards and fellowships from the Aspen Music Festival, the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, the Austin Critics' Table, Copland House, ISCM World Music Days, Future Places Portugal, MACRO, IC 2013, The Mizzou New Music International Composers Festival and the ASCAP Morton Gould Awards among others. He was also the recipient of a 2012-2013 Fulbright Grant to Portugal in music composition/technology where he researched the augmentation of interactive motion tracking systems for use in large-scale interdisciplinary collaborations. He's currently a visiting professor and composer in residence at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Why Renault’s EZ-GO concept car is significant development for autonomous on-demand ride-sharing?

Renault has managed to outdo the craziness of the Mercedes F 015 concept with its own driverless concept electric car, the EZ-GO. Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, it's a Level 4 autonomous urban EV with a top speed of just 30MPH. Six passengers enter through the massive front door and can see everything (and be seen) thanks to huge swaths of glass on the sides and roof.

The EZ-GO might have low performance, but it's high-tech. All the self-driving sensors, including radar, LiDAR, ultrasound and cameras are stashed in an antenna on the rear spoiler. Even though there's no driver, Renault says it has Level 4, rather than Level 5 self-driving, largely because it's a concept car that will only ever operate on a closed circuit.

Still, its tech would allow it to fit into traffic, change lanes, overtake other vehicles and turn at intersections. It can also move into a safe position if the system detects an incident or fault on the car itself. Renault is working on technology that will allow humans to monitor the vehicle, and safety is further enhanced by the front entry door that keeps passengers away from the flow of traffic.

The self-driving EV has active suspension that can handle rough city roads and raise or lower the car to accommodate passengers, along with four-wheel steering for better city maneuverability. There are also built-in wireless charging units and WiFi.

Once onboard, passengers can enjoy plenty of natural light coming through the panoramic roof while kicking back and relaxing. They can also surf the web and maybe get some work done during the journey using the Wi-Fi hotspot.

To access the EZ-GO, you would use an Uber-like app or board from special urban stations. Renault wants to improve on such apps, however, by giving users more choices on how they ride. If you're a woman and it's late, you could ask for girls-only service. Then it becomes a riding pool with no driver and only women in the vehicle so that they will feel safe.

While it might look like an arty design exercise, the EZ-GO makes sense when you understand what Renault was trying to do. The combination of a huge entry port at the front and the U-shaped seating arrangement allows passengers to walk in standing up, easily sit down and move around.

At the same time, there's a ramp that gives easy access for wheelchairs or parents with strollers.

The half-circle seating arrangement and copious glass serves another purpose, too. For the shared pool mode, you might not always feel comfortable when you are in a normal car and passengers you don't know are behind you. That's why Renault decided to make this U-shape. People are more or less facing each other, so they can see everyone and say hello.

Another survey told Renault that passengers feel more comfortable in a transparent vehicle. Unlike with private cars, people want to be seen in transit vehicles so that other passengers can't try anything funny.

When you are in the car, on the bench seat and beside a big window, it's like you are on a park bench that's somehow moving.
The automaker thinks the EZ-GO could accommodate sightseeing, evening parties and other activities besides ride-pooling. The semi-circular seats create a convivial atmosphere with lots of room to move, and the panoramic glass lets you see what's going on.

Where Uber calls itself everyone's private driver, Renault sees EZ-GO as an affordable, more sociable service. Renault designed it according to the needs of the cities. The idea is to use autonomous and EV tech to allow mobility for all.

As such, an EZ-GO-like service would provide more freedom to folks who can't afford to own a car or can't drive, including the young and elderly. It would also improve cities by reducing traffic, pollution and parking demand.

The automaker thinks that autonomous and electric cars could provide not just mobility, but energy storage. It recently unveiled a smart island at Santo Porto, Portugal, with Renault Zoe EVs, solar and wind power, and battery backup systems. The idea is that during off-peak times, folks could charge up their EVs, and when power demand is high, they could discharge some power to the grid. The EZ-GO could do something similar in cities while it's not in use.

The EZ-GO is helping Renault prepare for the day when true robo-driver services start. That will inevitably reduce the demand for private cars, so all automakers are scrambling to develop their own ride-sharing tech. For now, though, Renault still makes most of its money from gas-burning vehicles. However, Renault said it will release its first EZ-GO-style robo-vehicle in 2022, and that's not terribly far away.

[4K] P3D V4.5 - ORBX Bilbao Landing Aerosoft A320 Vueling (LEBB)

Join me on this gorgeous evening as I make my approach into ORBX Bilbao (LEBB) in this Aerosoft Airbus Professional A320 of Vueling. I messed up part of the glide hence the white lights and steep approach for a section of the approach, this is something I am slowly getting better at. The dusk setting and low clouds gifted me a beautiful approach allowing me to showcase what can be acheived when P3D v4.5 is pushed to the limits at 4K. No colour correcting or editing has been used on this video, everything you see is in real time and frames.

Smart Skirting Board ®

Smart Skirting Board ® - Created and developed by: V.M.S. Fernandes, Lisbon Portugal, S. Pedro Residence. Teresa Tupholme, M.Psych., Lisbon Portugal, Uroclínica. J.P. Marujo, PhD, Lisbon Portugal, Unitranspessoal.

Purpose To create a wooden skirting board that ensures a more active surveillance of the elderly, as well as, the prevention of wheelchair accidents. Essentially this is an innovative tool that stimulates the visual, auditory and tactile senses of dementia patients providing cognitive stimulation that will delay the progression of dementia. By means of a light device in the Snoezelen system which is built into the skirting board, brain stimulation is achieved, improving the elderly person's attention span, memory, mood, verbal skills and concentration and helping them to relax, ultimately providing the elderly person with a means to cope with challenges of daily life (Staal, 2004). The skirting boards position and measurements have been carefully designed to prevent accidents, to allow for the installation of the technology and for easier access of the user. Method This skirting board has a width of 15cm and a height of 20-30 cm; and has been placed above the ankle line (8-12cm above ground level). These specific measurements facilitate the user's movement without the wheelchair's hand rims touching the wall, thus preventing damage to the walls and simultaneously avoiding possible injury to the user's hands. In addition to protecting the wheelchair user, these specific skirting board measurements have been designed to accommodate all the installed technology; the Snoezelen System, CD Player, Video Camera, Microphone and Motion Detectors, (Fig. 1). A non-scientific assessment of the skirting board has been carried out with formal health caretakers who have reported an improvement in the elderly person's responses to daily life challenges and an enhanced level of their well-being and will to live. Results & Discussion Advantages of this innovative skirting board include; prevention of hand injuries, protection of the walls from wheelchair damage; direct and permanent contact with the user and easy application without damage to the walls. The system has been equipped with a voice device that allows for a conversation to take place in real time, as well as, a video camera that allows for motion detection inside the room and also protects the individual's privacy considering it is 15 cm above ground level. It allows the caretaker to monitor the elderly. Moreover, the evening presence light on the skirting board ensures that when the elderly person wakes up at night he/she does not feel disorientated. The skirting board also has an in-built music system for the elderly person to hear the radio and a CD player which enables him to listen to relaxation CDS with voice instruction and music designed to promote reminiscence, intended to stimulate memories and is equipped with one or more energy points which may be used for charging electronic equipment, such as mobile phones. The skirting board is equipped with a Snoezelen system, placed at the top, which reflects various colors on the walls, providing moments of pleasure and relaxation to the elderly. Relaxing music has been added in digital form. This skirting board has been created with two types of sensors, one that monitors movement in the room and another that provides warning of the entry/exit of the individual from the room. When triggered, the latter activates a red light in the entry/exit point of the room, as well as a call bell. This equipment may be fully or partially controlled by the elderly person, depending on his/her psychomotor status and may be placed in any type of housing for the elderly or in private homes.
