MANED WOLF

Often described as a ‘fox on stilts’ the maned wolf is instantly recognisable for the long legs which are believed to be an adaptation allowing them to easily see over tall pampas grasses. Their coat is an orangey red across most of the body. Under the muzzle, along the tail and inside the ears the fur is white. The legs have black fur up until the knees. They have a distinctive mane which is also coloured black. This is raised up when they are threatened to scare off predators. The average maned wolf has a body measuring 4-4.25ft. The tail adds up to 18in to the body length.

At the shoulder they stand 29-36in tall. An average weight for the maned wolf is 44-55lbs. Another distinctive feature is the large ears which can stand up to 7in tall. The maned wolf is an omnivore. Up to half of their diet consists of fruit. The rest is supplemented with small mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects, palm nuts, eggs and grass. A particular favourite of theirs during the rainy season is lobiera, or wolf apple which a fruit similar to the tomato.

BALD UKAR

The Bald uakari is a South American primate with a rather unusual appearance. Thus, this animal exhibits a bright red, wide and flat face. Another characteristic feature of this animal is its extremely short tail. The Bald uakaris are believed to have developed this unique color pattern as a result of malaria, which is a common disease in their Amazon rainforest habitat: those with bright red faces are considered to display healthiness, while those with paler faces have definitely contracted malaria and lack the natural immunity to this disease.

Hence, these sick animals are typically left without mates. Bald uakaris are highly social creatures, forming groups of 10 - 30 individuals, although these primates have been observed in larger units of up to 100. When foraging, these groups divide into smaller sub-groups of 1 - 10 animals. Bald uakaris sleep during the nighttime high in thin tree branches. They use all four legs, when walking and running both on the ground and in trees. When bounding and jumping, they use only two legs. Bald uakaris communicate and mark their home ranges through loud shrieking calls, although these animals are generally quiet. They are not only intelligent, but also very active and playful animals. They spend a lot of time playing various games, particularly young individuals.

Note on Zande weapons: Because the Zande were really just a mix of a bunch of ethnic groups that the Ambomu tribe conquered, it’s sometimes hard to know exactly what weapons they created and used themselves and what weapons were “borrowed” by them or used by their multi-ethnic subjects. The makrigga and manbeli are especially fuzzy in this regard.

10 River Monsters Caught in the Amazon

The Amazon River is a supreme monster in itself, as it's the largest river in the Americas, only second to the Nile in the entire world. In fact, it is the largest river by discharge volume of water on Earth. It is equivalent to the sum of the next seven largest rivers, together, when it comes to the volume of flowing freshwater.

The Amazon is so huge that it runs across Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. Additionally, it has some really deep spots, with up to 330 feet.

This impressive giant is a major life source for zillions of creatures that thrive in the largest South American Rainforests. Inside and around the Amazon, live some of the most dominating predators in the world, ruling a magical place where's difficult to discern reality from myth.

If you've been there, you know how stunning it can be the experience. It's impossible to absorb it completely with all the senses. The sounds of the river and its surroundings stack with thousands of creatures buzzing and howling, the water flowing and splashing, adding to the occasional refreshing breeze. Light and darkness are present at all times, as the Amazon can be one of the hottest places in the world, with trees higher than most buildings, and murky waters so dense, they can hide monstrous giants. The colors you can find in the Amazon are exceptional, brushed across unique flowers, frogs, insects, and birds. Finally, the scent of the Amazon is unforgettable. It's like you can inspire the purest air, taking inside you a blessing in disguise.

The most fascinating thing about the Amazon River is the ferocious wildlife that prospers inside and around it. Since Francisco de Orellana named the Amazon River, it was a dangerous place, fiercely protected by the Natives. After barely surviving an ambush, the legendary explorer named the river after a tribe of warriors led by women in greek mythology, just as the Natives who attacked him and his crew.

Today, there are still dangerous outlaws hiding inside the dense rainforest that surrounds the Amazon River, but the territory is under Nature's command, despite centuries of human abuse.

The bravest adventurers and ecologists have dived inside the tight jungle to catch some of the most exciting creatures in the world. Many of these animals have proved to be dangerous for humans. But, we are much more dangerous for them. Because of poaching, mining, and deforestation, many of these legendary creatures are currently endangered.

Today, we are going to show you 10 River Monsters that have been caught in the Amazon.

Come with us, if you dare!

Number 10. Freshwater Stingray

There isn't a safe place around the Amazon River. Even the shores, with low-depth waters, hide beasts, such as the Freshwater Stingray.

The Freshwater Stingray is not a man-eating demon, but it's by far the most dangerous for humans in our list.

They cause more than a couple of thousands of injuries per year, only in Colombia. This stingray isn't aggressive but it's geared up to defend itself. It's almost impossible to see until it’s too late, because of its near-perfect camouflage. Well, it has to be excellent if you want to remain undetected measuring up to 6.6 feet! The bad thing about such a good camouflage is that a few medium-sized creatures, like humans, can step on you accidentally, triggering your venomous tail stinger unnecessarily. Unfortunately for humans, even if the tail stinger misses you, the upper surface can still hurt us, as their covered with sharp tooth-like scales.

Number 9. Electric eel

The electric eels are one of the most fascinating freshwater predators. They use electricity like no other creature on the Amazon or even the entire Animal Kingdom.

Adult ones are equipped with thousands of stacked electroplaques that can make a shock up to 860 volts and up to 1 ampere of current. Needless to say, the strongest shocks are dangerous for any animal, including humans. However, these creatures aren't eager to taste human flesh, as they tend to eat smaller fish only. Most humans are accidentally attacked by electric eels. Curiously enough electric eels aren't exactly eels but a type of knife fish.

Electric eels use electricity to detect prey and stun them. They use high voltage bursts to locate prey, causing them to twitch involuntarily. Then, this electric hunter sends a string of high voltage pulses at up to 400 per second to attack their target. Just like a taser!

Number 8. Payara

The Vampire fish or Payara is one of the fiercest and most scary Amazon River monsters.
