Attic Insulation Done Wrong… and How to Do It Right!

In Episode 71 of the On the Job Video series, Larry Janesky, owner and founder of Dr. Energy Saver, walks us through the attic of a home in Connecticut that had been previously insulated by another contractor to illustrate common mistakes being perpetrated by many insulation contractors across the country.

The owners of this home had serious comfort issues, with uneven temperatures around the house and rooms that were just drafty and hard to heat. They called contractors from the state energy program for help. After a quick energy audit, the contractors informed the homeowners that they would benefit from additional attic insulation -- and the contractor was then hired to add inches of blown fiberglass to the attic.

After the work was performed, however, the home was still just as uncomfortable as it was before. That is when they decided to call in Dr. Energy Saver and find out what went wrong. After performing a blower door test, Larry and his team realized that there was a significant amount of air leaking in and out of the house, greatly impacting comfort and energy savings.

Sure enough, when Dr. Energy Saver’s technicians inspected the recently insulated attic they found out that no air sealing was performed in the area. The only way to stop cold air from leaking into a house and making it uncomfortable is to stop heated air from leaking out – and since heated air rises, it usually leaks out of the upper levels of the house. The smallest gaps in the building, such as those around pipes and wires, lights, bathroom fans, duct chases and other ceiling fixtures, can amount to huge leakages.
Blown fiberglass does nothing to stop air leakages. The air flows right through it.

It is, therefore, very important to thoroughly air seal the attic completely before applying insulation. In this case, Dr. Energy Saver had to vacuum all the fiberglass insulation out of the attic just to be able to access the areas that needed to be sealed. After air sealing the attic, a new blower door test showed that they were able to reduce overall air leakage by 20%. After that, new plywood dams were built to contain the new cellulose insulation, which has a higher R-Value per inch than fiberglass. This brought the R-Value of the attic insulation up to U.S. Department of Energy’s recommended levels for the Northeast.

According to Larry, installing attic insulation without air sealing is malpractice, yet it is a very common practice among contractors because homeowners aren’t always aware of the problem. We hope this video will help homeowners across the U.S. make informed decisions when it comes to improving comfort and energy efficiency in their homes.

A properly air sealed and insulated attic is the most important component of a green, energy efficient home. An inefficient attic causes energy waste in many ways.

Due to a physics phenomena known as the stack effect, the air inside a building moves upwards, towards the upper levels of the house. If the attic is unsealed, all the conditioned air that you paid to heat and cool, will leak into the attic and escape to the outside.

On hot days throughout the year, the roof shingles absorb a lot of the sun's heat that then radiates into the attic, causing an attic to reach temperatures of up to 150 degrees! That heat will then be transferred to your living space and make your home uncomfortable and hard to cool.

Air ducts running through unconditioned and improperly insulated attics make for an even bigger source of energy waste. During the summer, metal ducts are conducting the air that you paid to cool through a scorching attic. The cool air is being re-heated before it reaches the rooms in your house! During the winter, the opposite happens. The hot air is reduced through the metal ducts that run through a freezing cold attic.

An energy efficient attic features a combination of thorough air sealing, a layer of insulation within the U.S. Department of Energy R-Value recommendations, and proper roof vents to prevent mold and ice damming. Air ducts that run through an unconditioned attic also need to be air sealed and properly insulated.

November 2016 - How To Remove Loose Insulation From Your Attic

My father helped me remove 58 bags of loose fill, blown in, cellulose insulation and 17 bags of old fiberglass insulation. Along the way I installed 5,995 square feet of new fiberglass insulation. This produced about 4 more bags of waste. The original cellulose insulation was, on average, about 3 to 4 inches thick. This equates to roughly an R-9 to R-12. The new insulation was R-30, with some areas getting R-60. Roxul was used around the fireplace. Fire blocking expanding foam was used to fill any air gaps.

Tools and Supplies:
Rockler Dust Right 4'' Quick-Fit Shop and Tool Set

This isn't the exact kit I used but similar to it. The important things to get are the handle and the extension wand.

Rockler Through-The-Wall Dust Right Port Kit

This is what I used to go through the garage ceiling and into the attic floor. The tube is long enough you can trim for thinner walls if needed.

PSI Woodworking D50C 4-Inch by 50-Feet Clear Flexible Dust Collection Hose

This is the clear, flexible hose I used. I purchased two of them and used one in the attic and one in the garage. I should have measured the length of the house to ensure I had enough hose but I lucked out in where I put my hole so everything was long enough.

2-piece Single Loop Squeeze Hose Clamp for 4 Dust Collection Hose

These are the ideal clamps to use, especially if you're taking things on and off frequently.


I have several and love them for running. For this project, they worked great as a mask and even kept debris out of my ears.

R-30 Insulation

I purchased all my new insulation from Home Depot. Because I needed so much, I actually ended up buying two pallets. The first layer is faced and in 4 foot batts while the second layer is unfaced and in 25 foot rolls.


Also purchased at Home Depot. I needed a small amount but knew I could use the left overs in the basement as soundproofing.

70 gal. 2 HP Industrial Dust Collector

Because we planned ahead, we managed to get a good deal on this the year before during the holidays. It came with one trash bag. We just used 45 gallon bags from Costco.

Touch n'Foam Fire Break Spray Foam

I find that this brand works best. The cans last longer, the aerosol lasts longer, and it is designed to work upside down.

Normally the heat travels across the attic by radiation and is absorbed by the attic insulation. Normal attic insulation only helps to reduce conductive heat (R-Value) flow.
