Watch This Arrow Penetration Test for Whitetail Hunters

What happens when a broadhead tipped arrow meets a deer's shoulder blade? Both of those are pretty doggone tough and neither like the other one, to be honest. But when bowhunters want to make the best shot to put a deer on the ground, they often pick the shoulder for the aiming point before releasing the arrow.

If you've ever seen a deer's shoulder after skinning a buck or doe, you know they're big, somewhat flat, curvy and are protected by a lot of tendons and short muscles. The shoulder doesn't have long muscles, like in the hind legs, because they're power generators for walking, running, jumping, kicking and digging with their sharp hooves. Broadheads can penetrate these tough, sinewy shoulder blades, though, because fixed- and mechanical-head broadheads are made with steel, titanium and aircraft aluminum. Razor-sharp and carrying energy from the powerful compound bows, these broadheads and arrows penetrate cleanly to put deer on the ground.

Dan Schmidt and the Deer & Deer Hunting crew explain how arrow penetration can be tested by shooting at boards of various widths. Then, in the product of the day, learn how skinny arrows like the Easton FMJ can improve arrow penetration and lead to more efficient harvests in the whitetail woods. Deer Talk Now. Season 6. Travis Wilkinson and his family were on a sailing trip in Norway's Svalbard archipelago, far north of the Arctic Circle. In late July, 2015, they were traveling through Hinlopen Strait, west of the largest island, Spitsbergen—an impossible route some summers, when pack ice blocks passage. But that summer, ice was especially sparse, making hunting harder for polar bears. These apex predators favor waiting at the sea ice’s edge, striking seals as they approach. A few days earlier, the Wilkinson family had been farther north, near the ice. There, bears looked healthy. But the scene just after midnight on July 23 was desperate. Mother and cub were struggling, skin hanging loose. According to Jon Aars, of the Norwegian Polar Institute, the cub, seven or eight months old, was likely to die if its mother didn’t eat soon. She probably wasn’t lactating. Wilkinson saw the bear sniff the air, picking up something of interest. This thin female couldn’t attack a healthy, full-grown walrus. A carcass would solve their problem. If the walrus were weak or sick, predation might be an option. But that walrus was alive and well. The situation was unworkable. The search for food went on.

First Air Powered Crossbow

First Air Powered Crossbow

On this video I have a chance to try out one of the most expensive new crossbows on the market and it is different than any other crossbow made. In more than twenty years of shooting all kinds of crossbows, I have never seen one like this. This crossbow is powered and then cocked by compressed air, like an air rifle. And it shoots incredibly accurate and fast. Innovations in crossbows have helped engineers to push them to the limit with incredible performance. This crossbow features a 300-pound pull draw weight and literally it cocks with the simple push of a button. It allows the hunter the ability to cock the crossbow effortlessly and safely de-cock without pulling the trigger. Featuring recurve bow limbs makes changing the string out simple and easy. The weight of the crossbows nearly twelve pounds and with a full tank of compressed air, you’ll see how many shots the shooter can expect. This crossbow shoots arrows at a blistering speed of 440 feet per second. This product review reveals some good safety points as well. Not available in retail stores yet, this crossbow is only available at this time online at

Archery Elk Shot Placement

While many archery hunters would certainly agree, getting in close to release an arrow at a big game animal is a rush like no other.

Most Pennsylvania hunters are accustomed to seeing a 100-200 pound whitetail come within bow range but have never experienced a 500 to 700 pound wild animal, bow in hand within 50 yards. This is a TOTALLY different experience as the sheer size of an elk can be overwhelming.

That said, we want to do our part to help you understand the best shot placement and time to release an arrow on an elk with archery equipment.

In this video, you can see the elk is standing in what we would refer to as broadside.

We have outlined the core vital area in red, but there are other things to think through before you release the arrow.

Where a lot of archery elk hunters go wrong is by aiming center mass on an elk behind the shoulder. Instead, it’s best to keep your aiming point towards the lower third of the elk’s body, a few inches behind the back of the front shoulder. For the angle this particular elk is standing, the best aiming point is marked with a small dark circle.

There is a rather large area above the lungs and between the spine that if your arrow ends up, chances are, you will not recover the animal. A “center of the body” white reference line is marked to resemble the area to keep your shot placement below.

Another very important fact to note is that an elk’s shoulder is very thick and difficult to penetrate, no matter how many pounds you are pulling with your bow. If your arrow finds its mark in the shoulder of an elk, chances are, you will not recover the animal.

This red line represents the back of the front shoulder.

Now that you have a solid understanding of the best aiming point, the area highlighted here in blue represents a larger core area that is extremely lethal.

If you were to let this elk take a step forward, hit the cow call and get him to stop, you will see that his left front shoulder is now more forward facing, opening up a larger area for you to place an arrow in the heart and lung area.

Your aiming point should still be set on the lower third, a few inches behind the front shoulder, represented here with the small dark circle.

The center mass line on the elk itself is still very important to say below, as well as behind the front shoulder. The most lethal core shot placement area is represented in blue.

Remember- It’s always best to make sure the animal is stopped before you release an arrow and only shoot at a distance you are comfortable with.

Thank you for taking the time to watch this video. We wish nothing but great success, safety and lots of great memories made in Pennsylvania’s elk country.
