Cathode ray oscilloscope (CRO) | Physics4Students

Cathode ray oscilloscope (CRO) is the most useful electronic instrument. This gives visual representation of electrical quantities such as voltage and frequency in any electronic circuit. It makes use of the properties of cathode rays, which are deflected in electric and magnetic fields and produce scintillation on fluorescent screen. CRO consists of three sections

(i) an electron gun
(ii) a deflection system
(iii) a fluorescent screen.

These are enclosed in a glass tube, which is completely evacuated.

(i) Electron gun
The electron gun consists of a cathode K, a control grid G and along with them two anodes A1 and A2. Electrons which are emitted from the indirectly heated cathode K, passes through the hole in the cylindrical grid G, towards the anode. Due to the negative potential of G with respect to cathode, these electrons bunch together, forming a beam of electrons coming out of G. The electron beam is accelerated by the two cylindrical anodes A1 and A2. Then the electron beam strikes the fluorescent screen.

(ii) Deflection system
With the help of two pairs of the plates X1, X2 and Y1, Y2, the electron beam travelling towards the screen can be deflected. These plates are placed between the path of the beam beyond the anode A2. Y1, Y2 plates are called Y-plates and X1, X2 plates are called X-plates. The Y plates are kept horizontal and X plates kept vertical along the direction of the beams. The electron beam will be deflected along the vertical direction, if a DC potential is applied to Y plates and the electron beam will be deflected along the horizontal direction, with the potential on X-plates.

(iii) Fluorescent screen
The glass tube is coated with a fluorescent material. When the beam strikes the screen a light spot is visible. The electrons striking the screen are returned to the power supply via the inner surfaces of the glass envelope, usually coated with graphite. This coating is connected to anode A2 by a lead-in wire.

Uses
(i) It is used to measure a.c and d.c voltage.
(ii) It is used to study the waveforms of a.c voltages.
(iii) It is used to find the frequency of a.c voltage.
(iv) It is used to study the beating of heart in cardiology.

The CRO stands for a cathode ray oscilloscope. It is typically divided into four sections which are display, vertical controllers, horizontal controllers, and Triggers. Most of the oscilloscopes are used the probes and they are used for the input of any instrument. We can analyze the waveform by plotting amplitude along with the x-axis and y-axis. The applications of CRO’s mainly involve in the radio, TV receivers, also in laboratory work involving research and design. In modern electronics, the CRO plays an important role in the electronic circuits.

What is a CRO?
The cathode ray oscilloscope is an electronic test instrument, it is used to obtain waveforms when the different input signals are given. In the early days, it is called as an Oscillograph. The oscilloscope observes the changes in the electrical signals over time, thus the voltage and time describe a shape and it is continuously graphed beside a scale. By seeing the waveform, we can analyze some properties like amplitude, frequency, rise time, distortion, time interval and etc.

What is CRT?
The Cathode Ray Tube or CRT is a Vacuum Tube of special geographical shape which converts an electrical signal into a Visual signal.
There are main 4 parts of CRT.
1. Electron Gun.
2. Focusing and Accelerating Anodes.
3. Horizontal and Vertical Deflection plates.
4. Evacuated Glass Envelope.

BLOCK DIAGRAM OF CRO -- CATHODE RAY OSCILLOSCOPE BLOCK DIAGRAM

Heart of CRO I cathode ray tube (CRT).
1) The input signal which is to be displayed is given to the vertical amplifier.
2) The input signal which is to be displayed is given the vertical amplifier.
3) At the same time the output of vertical amplifier activates trigger circuit.
4) The trigger circuit activates time base generator.
5) The output of a time base generator is a saw tooth waveform which is applied to horizontal amplifier.
6) The voltage from delay line is applied to vertical plates of CRT.
7) The beam of electrons coming from the cathode of CRT experiences the vertical deflection by these plates.
8) The voltage from horizontal amplifier is applied to the horizontal plate of CRT.
9) The movement of beam in X-direction is due to this plate.
10) The beam strikes the screen of the CRT which converts kinetic energy of electrons to light energy.
