Do you recommend or endorse things on social media? If you do, here are some tips to help influencers like you comply with the law.

Whenever you endorse a product, you have to tell people if you have a relationship with the brand. So if a brand pays you or gives you free stuff or discounts, tell people about that relationship when you promote anything from that brand.

Make sure people will see and understand that disclosure. Tell people about your brand relationship along with your endorsement. Not in your profile, not in a bunch of hashtags. Put it early in the message or superimposed prominently on the picture. In a live stream, it should be repeated often enough that people will catch it.

Make it plain and simple. You can say your post is an ad, advertisement, or sponsored - with or without a hashtag. You can say thank you to the brand for the free product, if a free product is all you got. Or you could label yourself a partner or ambassador of the specific brand. Again, make sure to put your disclosure where people can’t miss it.

Hey everyone! Welcome to the Federal Trade Commission’s first FTC In the News update. FTC In the News is a new summer series where you’ll be able to briefly hear about what the FTC is up to and how we’re protecting America’s consumers.

Our first episode is a big one. Today, I’m going to tell you a little bit about robocalls, what the FTC is doing to stop them, and what you can do to better protect yourself from robocallers.

So, what’s a robocall?

For those of you who’ve answered your phone and heard air or a recorded message instead of a live person, you’ve been robocalled. Not all robocalls are illegal. Political robocalls and robocalls made by charities are not covered by the FTC’s rules - but if the robocall’s message is attempting to sell you something, and you didn’t agree with the company to hear about it, - then that’s illegal.

If you, like me, receive robocalls, you might think that “these calls are annoying.” But. some calls may be more than just annoying, they could be outright dangerous – especially when a robocall offers you a service or product that may not actually exist or if the caller asks for personal information such as your birthday or social security number.

Examples of these harmful and illegal robocall operations are highlighted in the FTC’s recent, nation-wide, inter-agency crackdown called “Operation Call it Quits.” This operation against illegal robocallers includes 94 actions targeting operations around the country responsible for more than one BILLION illegal calls.

Let’s take a look at some of the FTC robocalling cases and some of these illegal tactics so you’re prepared the next time you receive a robocall.
First Choice Horizon, LLC, 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle, Media Mix 365, and Derek Jason Bartoli have all been named in separate FTC complaints that allege different robocalling violations. One robocalling tactic involved the use of an autodialer, or computer-based dialing system to call over 57 million phone numbers in a single year. A different defendant tricked consumers into providing sensitive personal information, such as their social security and credit card numbers. Another defendant called millions of numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry, with the intent of annoying or harassing consumers. One phone number was even called more than 1,000 times in a single year!
If you’re like me, you might be thinking these cases are unbelievable! In reality, these cases are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the egregious behavior of robocalling scams.
The FTC continues to make exceptional progress in its campaign against robocalling and has brought 145 cases against 479 companies and 387 people responsible for illegal robocalling. But we know we may not be able to stop them all. That’s why we want you to know the steps to take to stop unwanted calls.
If you receive an unwanted robocall – your first step is to hang up. Don’t speak with the caller, or press any buttons – just hang up. Next step is to block the caller. To see what call blocking services may be available, check out ftc.gov/calls for more information. After you hang up and block the number, report the call at ftc.gov/complaint. The information you provide helps us catch illegal robocallers and better prevent robocallers from annoying or harming anyone else.

You get an urgent email at work, maybe from HR or your company CEO. You open it, click on the link, and you're locked out of the system, along with the rest of your company. That's a ransomware attack. That link downloaded software that's holding your business data hostage. Now you're being asked for money to get your system back. Ransomware can take a serious toll on your business, and your customers won't be happy that their information is in criminal hands.

So how do you protect your business against ransomware? Start with a plan. Make sure your business data is backed up outside your network. Teach everyone at your place of work how to spot ransomware, and always install the latest software patches and security updates.

But what if you're attacked? Now it's time to implement that plan. First, disconnect the infected devices from your network right away. This might limit the damage. Then, contact the authorities, like your local FBI office. Paying the ransom is up to you, but law enforcement doesn't recommend it, and you might not get your data back.

Bienvenidos a esta semana en la FTC, un segmento de la Comisión Federal de Comercio en la que podrás escuchar cómo estamos protegiendo a los consumidores en la FTC.

Tenemos mucho que contarte en este primer segmento. Hoy vamos a hablar un poco sobre robocalls, lo que la FTC está haciendo para pararlos y lo que tú puedes hacer para protegerte de estas llamadas pre-grabadas ilegales.

Bueno, ¿qué son estos robocalls?

Si contesta una llamada telefónica y escucha un mensaje grabado en vez de la voz de una persona en directo, esa llamada es un “robocall”. No todas estas llamadas son ilegales. Las llamadas de candidatos para puestos electivos, o de entidades de caridad que piden donaciones no están reguladas por la FTC -pero si recibe un “robocall” de ventas y usted no le dio a esa compañía permiso escrito para que lo llamen, es una llamada ilegal y es probable que estén promocionando alguna estafa y lo que quieren es su dinero y su información personal.
Recientemente anunciamos junto con otras organizaciones de cumplimiento de ley, la “Operación Dejen de llamar” donde se anunciaron 94 acciones de ley contra operaciones que fueron responsables de BILLONES de llamadas tipo robocalls ilegales.
La FTC, en colaboración con otras agencias federales, estatales y locales a cargo del cumplimiento de la ley, recientemente anunció la Operación Dejen de llamar. Esto es parte del esfuerzo de la Comisión para ayudar a frenar la ola de llamadas de telemercadeo pre-grabadas o robocalls que tanto nos molestan a todos.
First Choice Horizon, LLC, 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle, Media Mix 365 y Derek Jason Bartoli han sido nombrados en quejas de la FTC separadas que alegan diferentes violaciones de robocalling. Una táctica de robo de llamadas involucró el uso de un marcador automático o un sistema de marcación por computadora para llamar a más de 57 millones de números telefónicos en un solo año. Un acusado diferente engañó a los consumidores para que proporcionaran información personal confidencial, como sus números de seguridad social y tarjetas de crédito. Otro acusado llamó a millones de números en el Registro Nacional de No Llamar, con la intención de molestar o acosar a los consumidores. ¡Incluso se llamó a un número de teléfono más de 1,000 veces en un solo año!
La FTC está trabajando duro para atrapar a las personas que llaman ilegalmente y ha presentado 145 casos contra 479 compañías y 387 personas responsables de robocalls hasta la fecha, pero sabemos que no podemos detenerlos a todos. Usted puede ayudar a parar estas llamadas ilegales. Siga estos pasos: Si recibe un robocall, cuelga el teléfono, no confié en su identificador de llamadas porque lo pueden falsear y consulte a su proveedor de servicio telefónico sobre el bloqueo de llamadas. Para ver qué servicios de bloqueo de llamadas pueden estar disponibles, visite ftc.gov/llamadasindeseadas. Después de colgar y bloquear el número, reporte la llamada en ftc.gov/queja.
