Git on Windows and in Visual Studio 2013 (for beginners)

This is a thorough introduction of Git I made at the local .Net user group, with special attention to the new Git integration in Visual Studio 2013. Slides & notes are here:

It's rather slow-paced (hint: YouTube offers playback speedup), so if you're looking for something in particular, skim through the TOC and skip to the relevant parts:

00:20 Intro, about me, Microsoft, Visual Studio, TFS, etc
06:40 Inventing your own version control (what is Git, kind of)
11:25 Visual Studio 2013
12:45 OK, Visual Studio demo really starts now
15:00 Looking in explorer what git repo VS created (.gitattributes, .gitignore)
17:45 Initial commit from within VS
21:35 Show diff between local changes and checked in stuff
23:00 View history, view history for single file
25:20 Installing full Git from within Visual Studio
28:20 Using Git from the command line
30:00 OK, for real now, git init
31:25 Git repo created from cmd-line, adding it into Visual Studio
34:00 Adding/staging files for a commit from the cmd-line
36:40 VS keeps in sync with whatever I do on the command line
38:00 cmd-line: git commit -a -m Some message, git log
39:10 Theory: The contents of a Git repository, compressed history. The SHAs
43:50 Theory: How does distributed actually work out with multiple collaborators
47:00 Is there also a central repository even though it's distributed?
51:00 Tooling/GUIs outside Visual Studio
52:00 Hosting possibilities (for the central repository)
53:00 Creating a project on VisualStudio.com demo, more hosting discussion
1:00:48 Forking a project on GitHub
1:04:50 Pimping up the command line with posh-git

1:13:45 Q: Can I use Stash and Branches from within VS? (branch/merge demo)
1:17:00 Q: What does commit/push/sync mean?
1:20:05 There's this thing called rebasing...
1:21:25 Q: Can you lock files? (nope)
1:22:53 Q: Can I share a Git repository via SkyDrive? (yes)
1:24:20 Q: How do you revert changes? (I explain revert, reset and rebase)

How To Deploy a ASP.NET Website to IIS or Azure

Deploying a website used to be tricky. Now with all of the built-in help, deploying your ASP.NET website to a local web server or the cloud can be done in minutes. Today, I am going to show you the options you have for deploying a full .NET website. We will cover deploying to a local or remote IIS server as well as Window Azure. Since .NET Core is a bit different, I will be covering the deployment options for it in a separate video. Not to worry though, the techniques in this video will also work for .NET Core. There are just more options available to it than there are to the full .NET Framework.

Sam Guckenheimer on Testing, Data Collection, and the State of DevOps Report - Episode 003

This episode, Jeffrey Palermo welcomes his guest Sam Guckenheimer, to the podcast! Sam is the Product Owner for the Azure DevOps product line at Microsoft, and has been with the Microsoft team for the last 15 years. He has 30 years of experience as an architect, developer, tester, product Manager, project manager, and general manager in the software industry worldwide. His first book, Software Engineering with Microsoft Visual Studio Team System, was translated into 7 languages and recognized as a de facto guide for teams adopting Agile practices. He’s also a frequent speaker at industry conferences.

Sam explains the exciting new offer around Azure Pipelines for open source teams, changes he has seen in the industry from his many years of working at Microsoft, and some of the biggest changes in how users work with Azure DevOps. He also provides tons of key insights into the findings and research around predicting the impact Microsoft’s changes will make on user interactions, good practices around gathering live site telemetry and data collection, architectural (or design decisions or patterns) that help or hurt the live site supportability of a complex system, and key takeaways from his own internal learnings and the State of DevOps Report.

Topics of Discussion:

[:50] About today’s topic and guest.

[2:00] What is Sam focusing on now?

[3:11] With many years at Microsoft, IBM, and Rational Software, what changes stand out in the industry in Sam’s mind?

[5:51] What’s the most exciting part of the Azure DevOps release for Sam? The open source capabilities of course!

[9:29] Why Sam loves open source frameworks.

[11:05] What makes Azure DevOps so successful? And the biggest changes in how engineers work with it.

[15:15] A word from Azure DevOps sponsor: Clear Measure.

[15:43] The findings and research around predicting the impact Microsoft’s changes will make on user interactions, their feedback cycle, and applying the “rule of thirds” to make data-informed decisions.

[19:42] Good practices around gathering live site telemetry and data collection through Azure Log Analytics and Azure Application Insights.

[22:42] Other internal learnings: the notion of a production first mindset, designated responsible individual (DRI), and repair items.

[26:56] Has Sam found any architectural or design decisions or patterns that help or hurt the live site supportability of a complex system?

[30:42] Sam’s take on APM software and traditional monitoring tools.

[32:36] Sam speaks about the State of DevOps Report and why it is so important.

[36:39] Key takeaways from Sam on the State of DevOps Report and his own internal learnings.
