Vernon Jones: 'Democrats Won't Let Black People Leave Mental Plantation'

President Donald Trump and speakers at the Republican National Convention sought to paint a positive picture of his widely criticized handling of the coronavirus pandemic, with cameos by frontline workers and praise for his leadership in the race to develop a vaccine.

“These are the incredible workers that helped us so much with the covid,” Trump said in remarks from the White House alongside workers from police officers to nurses and truck drivers. “We can call it many different things from China virus -- I don’t want to go through all the names because some people may get insulted -- but that’s the way it is.”

Trump has been criticized for failing to move more forcefully to combat the virus that has killed more than 177,000 people in the U.S. and for resisting advice from public health officials such as the need to wear masks in public places. Earlier Monday, he said the virus is “going to be fading” and ridiculed Democratic rival Joe Biden for saying he’d shut down the economy again if needed.

The president’s claims to success were echoed by convention speakers, including Dr. G.E. Ghali, an oral surgeon and coronavirus patient from Louisiana, who thanked Trump for a response to the pandemic that Democrats criticize as woefully inadequate. It has killed more than 175,000 people in the U.S.

Georgia State Rep. Vernon Jones on why he's voting for Donald Trump

Vernon Jones, a Democratic state representative from Georgia, speaks during the 2020 Republican National Convention about why he's voting for President Donald Trump. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

The DNC featured a number of registered Republicans who announced their support for Biden. At the Republican convention, Democratic state Rep. Vernon Jones of Georgia made his case for Trump.

“The Democratic Party does not want Black people to leave the mental Plantation they’ve had us on for decades,” Jones, who is Black, said in his prepared remarks.

Jones, 59, accused Democrats of “pandering” to Black voters and said that when he announced his support for Trump, “all hell broke loose.”

“I was threatened, called an embarrassment, and asked to resign by my party. Unfortunately, that’s consistent with the Democratic Party and how they view independent thinking Black men and women,” Jones said.

Vernon Jones 2020 Republican National Convention speech: full video

A Black Democratic lawmaker in Georgia’s state legislature says he’s supporting President Donald Trump because they’ve made improvements benefiting the Black community.

During the opening night of Republicans’ convention Monday, state Rep. Vernon Jones said “all hell broke loose” when he announced his support for Trump. But Jones said he stands by his decision in part because Trump has backed initiatives including increased funding for HBCUs, criminal justice reform and “the most inclusive economy ever.“

Jones says, “The Democratic Party does not want Black people to leave the mental plantation” on which they’ve toiled. He added, “Black voices are becoming more woke and louder than ever.”
