*NEW* Become A Patreon (100% proceeds go to the charity of your choice) *NEW*
Hey guys! I've seen over and over questions and comments regarding dieting so I decided to start a series where I conduct a diet review in detail. I know many of you want to lose weight and there are many videos on weight loss out there. But I want to give you an honest doctor's take on fasting or time restricted eating.

I kicked off the series with the very popular, intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating. It's claim to fame is that helps burn belly fat/ lose your belly and it does so through fast weight loss. But is fast weight loss even healthy?

Anyway, I could go into more detail covering the smallest intricacies of the diet but I did not want to weigh down the video, both literally and figuratively. Please let me know if this is too little, too much, or just the right amount of information about intermittent fasting.

Also, I want you to remember that diets are not all about weight loss but more importantly about eating healthy. I sincerely hope you enjoy, and definitely let me know if you want more videos like this by giving it a like and a share.

Doctor Mike on Diets: Ketogenic Diet | Diet Review

*NEW* Become A Patreon (100% proceeds go to the charity of your choice) *NEW*
Hey guys! I am back with the next installment of my diet review series. This week I am covering the incredibly popular ketogenic diet. Within the last year or two, the keto diet has soared in popularity and I can understand why. It is a simple diet where counting calories isn't important (who wants to count calories) and you get to eat a bunch of really delicious foods.

If you are curious, the name of the diet comes from the ketone bodies produced within your body as a result of switching your body to fuel itself through fats instead of carbs. This is also referred to as a state of ketosis.

Video Breakdown:

Opener- 0:23
Nutrition Basics- 0:28
How it Works- 1:05
Keto Claims- 2:12
Potential Harms- 5:07
Final Thoughts- 5:27
Bloopers- 6:18

I know many of you want to lose weight and there are tons of videos on weight loss out there. But I want to give you an honest doctor's take on the keto diet, which is essentially a high fat low carb diet. Its claim to fame is that helps to burn body fat for energy, therefore helping you lose weight quickly. But is fast weight loss even healthy? + Is this the best weight loss diet?

Anyway, I could go into more detail covering the smallest intricacies of the diet but I did not want to weigh down the video, both literally and figuratively. Please let me know if this is too little, too much, or just the right amount of information about intermittent fasting.

Also, I want you to remember that diets are not all about weight loss but more importantly about eating healthy. So let's get started with the Keto diet explained / Ketogenic diet explained diet review!

I sincerely hope you enjoy, and definitely let me know if you want more videos like this by giving it a like and a share.

The Ketogenic or Keto diet has gotten A LOT of media coverage in the last few years. I decided to follow up my original Keto video with one where I actually try out the diet for myself.

I was not surprised that the keto diet was difficult to stick to because of the restrictive nature of it. However, the weight loss and other benefits were definitely noticed and fairly early on into the diet.

If you have an idea of something you want me to cover in depth, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. We will be back with more Medical Drama Review Series this Sunday so please submit more names of shows/episodes you'd like for me to watch. Love you all!

The 'Most Effective' Method Of Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is changing the way people eat. But there are so many different ways to fast these days, is one method better than all the rest? Personal trainer and health coach, Max Lowery says, cutting your eating down to just 2 meals a day is the best way to tackle fasting head-on. He also believes that the popular 16:8 method isn't as perfect as it seems.

With just one slight adjustment, he says you can make it far more effective. You can learn more about his lifestyle on Instagram.

Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more.

--------------------------------------------------

Following is the transcript of the video:

Max Lowery: So 16:8 is basically, you break your day up into a period of a 16-hour fast with an 8-hour eating window. And I think it's just, you know, for me, it's just the more natural way of eating. Obviously, most people that start doing the two meal day is because of weight loss, and yes, they are losing weight but actually, we're constantly hearing how people have so much more energy throughout the day. They are not having, you know, this energy crashes because they aren't so dependent on food for energy, they are using body fat. They realize that they don't have to constantly eat to get themselves through the day.

So the reason I started the two meal day — it's not the 16:8, is because one of the main issues that people come into with the 16:8 is that they get obsessed with the time periods. And they start counting down the hours until they can eat and they end up eating because the clock tells them to rather than their body tells them to. It's essentially the same thing, in terms of, what's going on, but just changing the focus to listening to your body is when it becomes a way of life because you're understanding yourself better.

If someone says, Okay, how do I start tomorrow? First of all, choose whether you're going to find it easier to skip dinner or you're going to find it's easier to skip breakfast. So say you're skipping breakfast, I would say, Okay, what time do you normally have your breakfast? Average person says 8 a.m. I'll say, Okay, rather than 8 a.m., go in to work or whatever you are doing and wait until 10 a.m. and see how you feel. And then basically, over the course of two weeks, push until it's a 16-hour gap. And the whole time you are listening to your body, you're kind of, hopefully learning to understand that just because your stomach is empty, does not mean that you are hungry.

Then the main thing is that you fundamentally need to be eating whole foods cooked from scratch. A lot of other intermittent fasting methods have been like, Oh no, you can eat what you want but just in a small time period or Eat what you want for 5 days. That doesn't encourage changes in behavior long-term, which is obviously, fundamentally what the issue is for some people. So all I'm trying to do is just educate people and give them the tools to listen to their bodies better and that's really what it boils down to.

How to Use Intermittent Fasting to Lose Weight and Feel Great

To support our channel and level up your health, check out:
Our Fast Weight Loss Course:
Our Better Health Basics Course:

Our Facebook Page:

First, what is intermittent fasting?

In simple terms, it is alternating between periods of eating and fasting. Call it feasting and fasting if you like. It’s totally opposite to what we’ve always been told, to ‘never skip a meal’.

So what does the science say about Intermittent Fasting for Weight Loss?

1. Improves the Metabolism.

Short-term fasting actually increases your metabolic rate by 3.6-14%, helping you burn even more calories

2. Helps you lose just as much weight as calorie restriction.

We see in multiple studies that when compared to a calorie controlled diet, people tend to lose the same or sometimes more weight with fasting.

3. Targets Fat.

In a study of Italian athletes one group was assigned to intermittent fasting for 8 weeks, while the other consumed a normal daily routine of three meals a day.
After 8 weeks, the intermittent fasting group lost significantly more fat mass than the normal diet group, without losing any muscle mass
Since the more lean muscle tissue you have on your body the more calories you’ll burn naturally, this is a good thing for fat loss.

4. Seems to be easier for people to stick with.

According to the research people find fasting much easier to stick to than traditional, everyday calorie restriction.
Now, there are many different types of intermittent fasting, and I’m going to talk about 4 of the most popular ones right now.

#1 The 5:2 Diet

Founded by Dr Michael Mosley and became extremely popular following his BBC documentary “Eat, Fast, and Live Longer”.

In this method you eat normally five days a week. Then you fast partially for two days a week, eating about ¼ of a normal day’s recommended calories, which translates to about 500-600 calories a day. Not really a true fast, but there you go.

#2 The 16:8 Method (time-restricted diet)

Where you Eat within an 8-hour window every day then fast 16 hours every day. People usually just skip breakfast and eat a later lunch at around 1-2pm.

#3 Alternate day fasting

Where you Fast for 24 hours every other day - alternating days of eating without restrictions with fasting days.

#4. Eat Stop Eat Method

Where you Fast for 24 hours 2 days out of the week, usually from 5pm in the evening until 5pm the next day.

Ok, let’s go through some common questions you may have about intermittent fasting:

Which type of IF is best for weight loss?

It’s really up to you.

The Eat Stop Eat diet is the one with the most research, since most fasting studies performed involve full 24-hour fasts and are usually not done back to back.
The 16:8 method is the most popular because of how convenient it is.

Give both a try and see how you feel.
Is it safe?

Fasting is for the larger majority of the population is safe to do.

The only times Intermittent fasting is NOT recommended if you are:
Pregnant or breast feeding
Experiencing chronic stress
Underweight
A Type 1 diabetic
On any medication – especially insulin

Also, fasting longer than 24 hours is not as well researched at this time so keep that in mind if you’re thinking about extended fasting.

How do I start?
Choose an intermittent fasting style that fits in your daily and weekly routine, and plan in advance what you are going to eat. I’ll add a couple of the best resources in the description.

Can I exercise on the fasting days?
Yes you can. It’s not for everyone, but you can do it without fear of losing your muscle mass and will likely burn a little more fat training fasted.

What can I drink during my fasts?
Unsweetened tea, water, and black coffee are best. A little dab of cream is fine in your coffee, just don’t turn it into a Frappuccino.

Jason Fung, nephrologist and best-selling author, shares his experiences utilizing an individualized approach to fasting to successfully treat thousands of overweight, metabolically ill, and diabetic patients, and why being a doctor who specializes in kidney disease gives him a unique insight into early indications of metabolic disease. We also have a great discussion on insulin resistance where Jason makes the case that we should actually think of hyperinsulinemia as the underlying problem. We also discuss the difference between time-restricted feeding, intermittent fasting, and dietary restriction (e.g., low-carb) and how they can be used to attack the root cause of T2D, metabolic syndrome, and obesity. We also have a fascinating discussion about the limitations of evidence-based medicine which leads to a conversation where we compare and contrast the scientific disciplines of medicine and biology to theoretical physics.
