AC Generator || 3D Animation Video || 3D video

A.C. generators or alternators (as they are usually called) operate on the same fundamental principles of electromagnetic induction as D.C. generators.
Alternating voltage may be generated by rotating a coil in the magnetic field or by rotating a magnetic field within a stationary coil. The value of the voltage generated depends on-
the number of turns in the coil.
strength of the field.
the speed at which the coil or magnetic field rotates.

Electric Generator

CBSE class 10 Science - Magnetic Effects of Electric Current - Working of Electric Generator is based on the principle of Fleming's Right hand rule.
The current whose direction reverses with the movement of the coil is known as the alternating current. Most appliances use Alternating Current.

Electric Generator (Dynamo) | AC and DC Generator | CBSE Class 10 Science

Electric Generator (Dynamo) | AC and DC Generator | CBSE Class 10 science
The topic named, electric generator (dynamo), AC and DC generator, alternating current, electric current and magnetic current is described here from the chapter Magnetic Effects of Electric Current of class 10 science.

AC and DC :
AC refers to Alternating Current. It changes the direction after equal intervals of time.
DC refers to Direct Current. It does not change its direction. It has only one direction.

Electric Generator (Dynamo) :
It is a device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
Principle :
When a straight wire is moved in a magnetic field, induced current flows in it.
There are two types of electric generator - AC and DC.

Alternating Current Generator :
Construction :
1. The magnetic field is created using a magnet.
2. A rectangular loop ABCD.
3. Two full rings are attached to the rectangular loop.
4. Two carbon brushes touch the two rings.
5. Both brushes form the loop through the galvanometer.
Working :
1. As wires of loop move in the magnetic field, induced current flows in them due to EMI.
2. As wires of loop move upwards sometimes and sometimes downwards, the direction of current in the circuit changes. When the CD arm moves up during half revolution, current flow in one particular direction. When it moves down in the other half revolution, current flows in another direction.

DC Generator :
In the case of the DC generator, split rings are used instead of full rings and they make the current to flow in a single direction. Split rings make the current i flow in a single direction through the galvanometer. Note-The only difference between an AC and DC generator is in the way the two ends of the generator of the coil are linked to the outer circuit.

All the above-mentioned topics are described in an interactive and efficient manner so that the students could easily understand them.

A slip ring is a continuous ring, whereas a commutator is segmented. Slip rings provide a continuous transfer of power, signals, or data.  Brushes and slip rings arrangement is shown for an AC generator. Each ring is connected to one wire only.

Commutator is a device/attachment for reversing the direction of flow of electric current through which electrical connection is made and which ensures the current flows as direct current. Also known as split ring as it has a gap, a commutator reverses the direction of the current every 180º and so the output is DC

Peak emf can be deduced from the equation written below :
According to Faraday's law of Electromagnetic induction, induced emf is equal to rate of change of flux linkage.
This was derived from the equation given below:
E = BANωsinθ
E= BANωsin(ωt)

Emf will have its peak value at angle theta = 90 degrees.
