Economics 101: First Principles (the Elon Musk Method)

Full article here:

In this video I discuss what it means to argue from first principles a concept I was first introduced to by Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX), and then apply First Principles Logic to the field of economics. This video is intended for people looking to get started in Economics, but also for people who want to reevaluate their own understanding from a different perspective.

The First Principles Method Explained by Elon Musk

Interview by Kevin Rose

The benefit of first principles thinking? It allows you to innovate in clear leaps, rather than building small improvements onto something that already exists. Musk gives an example of the first automobile. While everyone else was trying to improve horse-drawn carriages, someone looked at the fundamentals of transportation and the combustion engine in order to create a car.

Naturally Musk does give one warning about using first principles for innovating however, it takes a lot more mental energy.

Elon Musk: The Scientist Behind the CEO (and How He Teaches Himself) Documentary

This mini documentary takes a look at how Elon Musk sees the world through a scientific and engineering mind - and how this fuels the businesses he has started. We will also take a look at how he taught himself about different industries: from banking (Paypal), to rocket engineering (SpaceX).

Elon Musk champions the use of physics as a way of thinking. And believes that more people should be innovating in manufacturing - to help build the city of the future. Rather than entering the finance, law, or internet based industries. This video also takes a look at the 'reasoning from first principles' framework - which will allow anyone to view their world, personal and business, just like Elon.

Elon Musk: I am not Buffett's biggest fan

Elon Musk spoke with Joe Rogan and here some of the highlights from the two-hour podcast.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that fewer people should start careers in finance and law and instead focus on innovation.

“In the United States especially, there’s an over allocation of talent in finance and law. Basically too many smart people go into finance and law,” Musk said in an interview with the comedian Joe Rogan that aired Thursday.

When asked by Rogan if being a billionaire makes people see him in a different light, Musk said yes.

“In recent years, billionaire has become a pejorative, like that’s become a bad thing, which I don’t think makes a lot of sense in most cases,” Musk said.

But he distinguished people who became rich by founding a company that builds things, versus those who earned their wealth through financial engineering or other means. “If you organize people in a better way, to produce products and services that are better than what existed before and you have some ownership in that company, that essentially gives you the right to allocate more capital.”

“So this is both a compliment and a criticism,” Musk added. “We should have fewer people doing law and fewer people doing finance and more people making stuff.”

Musk said that manufacturing shifted from being a highly valued job to one that’s “looked down upon,” though the value is there.

“Making a car is an honest day’s living, that’s for sure,” Musk said.

The CEO also addressed his recent vow on Twitter to sell the majority of his physical possessions, which he said weigh him down.

“I have a bunch of houses, but I don’t spend a lot of time in most of them. That doesn’t seem like a good use of assets. Somebody could probably be enjoying those houses and get better use of them than me.”

What Secrets Elon Musk Isn't Telling Us & Why Doesn't Tesla Want Us To Know

Is Elon Musk and Tesla hiding things from us? Are they letting on less than they know. We have certainly seen them behave coy, particularly around battery day. Let's explore some possible reasons Tesla keep the real intel close to their chests, and only let out the information they have to.

All ideas in this video are my opinion, if you are investing in Telsa stock be sure to do your own research.

Why Elon Musk Believes Universal Basic income Will be Necessary

In todays video we discuss the growing implications of technology and how a universal basic income dividend (UBI) system could potentially flatten the curve of economic disruption from artificial intelligence. People like Elon Musk, Andrew Yang, and even Richard Nixon have all been promoters of such an idea. Over time, perhaps such an idea may become reality....

Disclaimer: nothing in this video is financial advice whatsoever and are simply my personal opinions and speculations.

Elon Musk And Andrew Yang Support UBI - Is America Ready?

Universal basic income (or UBI) is a key part of Andrew Yang's campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. On Monday, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted his support for Yang's candidacy. Musk and Yang have stated similar views on the need for universal basic income in the United States.

A main tenet of Yang's campaign platform is his pledge to provide $1,000 a month to all American citizens 18 and older. Yang refers to this payment as a Freedom Dividend that will become necessary as robots and automation replace humans more rapidly than people can find and be retained for new jobs.

UBI is making its way from the fringes to a serious topic of debate thanks to a growing number of high profile advocates, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Richard Branson, and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang. So far, the results of some UBI experiments have been controversial. Is America ready for universal basic income?

*** UPDATE *** Andrew Yang’s campaign reached out to us on August 16th to clarify that the Freedom Dividend would stack with Social Security and Veteran's Disability: According to Yang's plan, veterans with a disability will continue to receive benefits on top of the Freedom Dividend. Social Security retirement and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits will also stack with the Freedom Dividend. Those receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), another form of disability benefit, would have to choose between SSI or the Freedom Dividend whichever is more generous.

Elon Musk's hyperloop could revolutionise public transport | The Economist

Elon Musk's Hyperloop technology has the potential to revolutionise the way we travel. In a contest he held in Los Angeles, some of the world's brightest engineers gathered to find the best way to make this billionaire's pipe dream a reality.

Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube:

Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Tesla Motors and SpaceX, wants to revolutionise public transport. In 2017 he held an event at SpaceX's California headquarters showcasing the latest technology for what he believes is the future of intercity travel. An entirely new transport system, called Hyperloop.

What this is all about is advancing the state of transportation; trying new things that have never been done before that can make an incredible difference to peoples lives.

But is Hyperloop ready to usher in a new age of mass transit or is it just a billionaire's pipe dream?

In 1829 a competition was held to find the best locomotive engine for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, in northern England. George Stephenson's Rocket won first prize, posting a top speed of 38km per hour. Widely credited as the world's first steam locomotive the Rocket transformed how people travelled between cities.

Almost two centuries on, Musk is hosting the modern-day equivalent of that competition and teams of engineers from around the world have come to Los Angeles to compete, head-to-head. The aim is to bring Hyperloop one step closer to reality.

But what exactly is Hyperloop?
