FULL PARDON: President Trump pardons Alice Johnson in Oval Office

Alice Marie Johnson told Fox & Friends Friday she is not a prop in response to a Politico tweet that was hammered for its description of her speech at the Republican National Convention in support of President Trump, after being granted clemency while serving a life sentence.

I'm not a prop and I'm not a puppet. I make my own choices as to what I'd like to do, Johnson, a grandmother convicted of drug conspiracy and money laundering in 1996 and whose story caught the attention of Kim Kardashian, told co-host Ainsley Airhardt.

What amazes me about the things that are being said is that another former prisoner spoke at the DNC [Democratic National Convention] last week, and she was not called a prop for choosing to speak there, yet I don't have the choice to speak where I want to, Johnson said.

Johnson said many at Trump's acceptance speech were moved to tears by her story. Meanwhile, critics blasted Politico for a racist headline suggesting Johnson was being propped up by the Trump campaign as one of the most prominent beneficiaries of the First Step Act.

Almost six months after Trump commuted Johnson, he signed the First Step Act into law on Dec. 21, 2018.

Trump gives full pardon to Alice Johnson, whose cause was backed by Kim Kardashian

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said he was giving a full pardon to Alice Marie Johnson, a Tennessee woman who had received a life sentence for a first-time drug offence and whose cause was taken up by Kim Kardashian West.

Johnson had already served 21 years of her sentence by the time Trump, after Kardashian West had pleaded Johnson's case for release, commuted her sentence. She had been convicted on charges of conspiracy to possess cocaine and attempted possession of cocaine.

The 65-year-old is now a criminal justice reform advocate, who also spoke during the Republican National Convention on Thursday to talk about her release and praising Trump's decision to sign a criminal justice reform bill, the First Step Act, into law.

Before signing the pardon, Trump said about Johnson, we're very proud of Alice and the job you've done and what you represent. He then gave her the signed document, saying that it's a real honour.

President Donald Trump pardons convicted bank robber Jon Ponder

President Donald Trump pardons felon Jon Ponder, who, after he was released from prison, formed an organization to help recently-released prisoners re-enter society. With Richard Beasley, the former FBI agent who arrested him.

Trump pardoned Jon Ponder, an ex-convict and current founder of Hope for Prisoners, a nonprofit that works to help transition prisoners back into society upon their release.

Touting the pardon during the Republican convention raised questions about the politicization of the president’s clemency powers.

Trump has previously hosted Ponder at the White House, and earlier this year hinted that he was considering clemency. “We are giving him absolute consideration, and I have a feeling he’s going to get that full pardon,” Trump said of Ponder in February.

Ponder had reportedly been arrested as a teenager for armed robbery and had later been incarcerated for other crimes including assault.
