Traumatic birth of Thomson's gazelle in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania.

I was busy photographing a pair of mating lanner falcons in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, when my guide quietly said, I think that gazelle is about to give birth...

Given the mating activities of the falcon's this seemed like an appropriate next activity to photograph.  But what followed was much more than expected.

The gazelle was lying down about 5-10 meters from the road.  She looked distressed and nervous...

The Private Life of Deer - Amazing Nature Documentary

x

First hour of life for a Thomson's gazelle fawn

The fawn is less than 20 minutes old at the beginning of the video. In the hour or so after birth the mother must clean the fawn and the fawn must learn to stand, walk, and suckle. Once these tasks are complete, the fawn will hide in the grass for long periods of time while its mother grazes, until its mother retrieves it. This hiding behavior will persist for up to two months. The hour after birth is very risky for the fawn because until it begins hiding it is very conspicuous and vulnerable to predators.

This mother and fawn suffer several interferences by other gazelle - a hazard of giving birth within a herd.

To learn more about gazelle birth and the vulnerable postpartum period and to read my scientific paper on the topic, please visit goo.gl/ASBAHW.

Filmed at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya. August 16, 2012.

Impala in and slowly out of collapsed immobility

This video shows several things, including the limp body (not rigid as in tonic immobility) and how the oxygen deprivation causes a slower and more difficult emergence than from tonic immobility (which can end quite suddenly and rapidly).
