In a strange, dark box lives a group of box-headed elderly humanoid creatures with roots instead of legs. Most of these creatures are sunken into a catatonic sleep, unaware of anything outside their hermetic, sealed-off world.

But one of them emerges from the crowd, stunned into consciousness. Young and growing, the creature starts to cause a joyful ruckus, but struggles against the disapproval and rancor of the rest of his box-dwellers. But then the youngster begins to fight back, looking for a way outside the box but coming against its most oppressive forces yet.

Writer/director/animator Dusan Kastelic's short animation is a surreal yet exuberant allegory about the pleasures and perils of non-conformity, being an individual and pushing through obstacles to a new level of consciousness.

The narrative takes the phrase outside the box and spins it into a deeply imaginative, hypnotic narrative that resembles a fairy tale. Not a sanitized children's version of a fairy tale, however: the film instead resembles the original European fairy stories, which were dark, psychologically complex and disquieting in their emotional violence.

The images are nightmarish, with their evocations of distorted flesh and murky colors. But the expressiveness of the creatures and attention to detail -- created in open-source 3-D software Blender -- are remarkable from a technical and emotional level, and draw in viewers with a powerful combination of gesture, sound and storytelling.

Despite the claustrophobic world portrayed in the film, there are splashes of zany humor and joy, particularly as the younger creature expresses its unbridled childlike self. The musical score and sound design by Mateja Staric go a long way to create contrast between stultifying conformity and youthful individualism, as well as keeping the narrative at a consistently engaging pace.

Despite its strange appearance, the uninhibited joyousness and high spirits of the newly emergent creature are so much like the energy of children, and viewers cannot help but relate. Yet The Box becomes genuinely sad and painful as the youngster is repeatedly brought down and cut down to size, and confronts the mechanisms of the box itself that keep its inhabitants docile and in the dark.

Watching that struggle becomes a powerful metaphor for the oppression and conformity that we all face, whether it's the box that society puts us inside or the ones we put ourselves in. To watch the creature struggle against a dark, narrow world is hard, and yet, as the creature discovers, as long as you can feel a spark of an essential self, there is always a way towards the light.

Foreigner explores Medan, Indonesia. ????????

Everyone told me to be careful in Medan. Watch out! the said. Well there wasn't much to watch out for except friendly, smiling locals who wanted to chat and take selfies with me.

The guidebooks all tell you to skip Medan. There's nothing worth seeing there. It's only worth staying overnight if you have arrive late at night.. A city is always very interesting to me though. Okay it doesn't have a Disneyland or ruins of ancient buildings, but I like to see how ordinary people are going about their daily lives more than visiting tourist traps anyway.

I started off with a visit to Centre Point mall, finally getting a SIM card. With that I was able to use the GoJek app and no longer have to negotiate with the Becaks (Indonesian motorcycle rickshaws). It's also handy being able to pull up Google Maps when you're exploring by foot.

At the mall there's a street food food court where you can enjoy authentic Indonesia hawker food in air conditioned comfort (and pay much more for the privilege, but it's still cheap.)

I walked from the mall to Lapangan Merdeka, a big city park where I watched the local kids train to dance in a BTS style and read a poem about Indonesia's independence struggle. That's what I mean when I said you don't need to find massive popular tourist attractions to find something interesting in a city.

From there I walked to the mansion of Tjong A Fie, who was the richest man in Medan a century ago. His family still own the building but most of it has been turned into a museum, which, as museums go was very interesting. It helps a lot that a tour guide is assigned to you for free when you buy the (cheap) ticket.

I ended my afternoon exploration of Medan with a visit to a royal palace known as Istana Maimum. There you can hire traditional Malay clothes to wear for only 20,000 Rupiahs while you explore the palace. I was very sweaty by that point because of the insane humidity and walking around all day, but I still put the costume on and tried not to pass out from the heat.

The Vox Machina form a tentative alliance with an Illithid outcast named Clarota, deep inside the caverns under Kraghammer. They learn of the creature's people and their subjugation to a mysterious being known only as Kvarn, as well as the haggard mind flayer's expulsion from the hive. Now cut off from the Elder Brain, Clarota burns with hatred for this Kvarn, and wishes to free the Illithid race from the usurping entity. In order to do so, the Vox Machina must proceed further into the deep, and reach the center of Clarota’s hive. But in order for the heroes of Emon to reach the Illithid city in the belly of Khaloor, they must get past the first flayer they encountered, as well as its small army of Duergar.

The heroes devise a plan, and fly themselves down to the center of the enemey’s war camp, to chance a risky assassination attempt on a creature that could easily break their will with a glance.

CHM Live | What You Do Is Who You Are: How to Create Your Business Culture

[Recorded November 21, 2019]

Culture is how a company makes decisions. If culture is not purposeful, it could result in accidents or mistakes. As a leader, how do you create and sustain the culture you want? It’s a question crucial to every organization and Ben Horowitz, veteran entrepreneur and cofounder of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, is addressing it in his latest book, What You Do Is Who You Are: How to Create Your Business Culture.

Horowitz couples his role as an entrepreneur with a deep love for history to spotlight four historical leadership and culture-building models: Haiti’s Toussaint Louverture, who was the leader of the only successful slave revolt in history; the Samurai, who ruled Japan for seven hundred years and shaped modern Japanese culture; Genghis Khan, who built the world’s largest empire; and Shaka Senghor, an American ex-con who created the most formidable prison gang in the yard and ultimately transformed prison culture. Horowitz goes on to connect these lessons to modern case studies on organizational culture, including Reed Hastings at Netflix, Travis Kalanick at Uber, Hilary Clinton, and more, to help readers become the kind of leader they want to be—and others want to follow.

Horowitz sits with Andreessen Horowitz Editor in Chief Sonal Chokshi for a compelling conversation about creating a successful culture and the sometimes unexpected advice to current and future leaders that can weather both good and bad times.

Considering the Future of Copyleft: How Will The Next Generation Perceive GPL?

Bradley Kuhn

Copyleft ( licenses, particularly the GPL( and LGPL( are widely used throughout the Free Software community. However, recent for-profit corporate interest in Free Software development has led to a renewed preference toward non-copyleft licensing. Meanwhile, many for-profit entities that do use copyleft for their own software now do so in a manner that most copyleft aficionados find, at best, distasteful and at worst, abusive.

A long-standing truce once existed in our community between fans of non-copyleft licensing and copyleft, but as the community has grown, that truce has mostly disintegrated. While no one in the copyleft communities disputes that non-copylefted Free Software is an important part of our community, copyleft faces new challenges that make past debates about the appropriateness of copyleft seem minor by comparison.

This talk discusses all aspects of the complicated situation that copyleft now faces, including younger developers apparent preference for non-copyleft licensing (as expressed, in part, in the so-called post-open source debates - the widespread and common failures in GPL compliance, and how licensing choices are today - unlike in the past - rarely in the hands of individual developers, but instead their corporate employers.
