Both Eyes Open: Tips For Better Shotgun Wing Shooting & Duck Hunting

In last week's tips for better shotgun shooting, Zach Kienbaum and Desirae Edmunds talked about mounting the shotgun, not shouldering it. When the shot gets called, the first step is to bring the gun to your face so you have a straight line of sight down the barrel. Eye dominance plays a huge role in shooting correctly. You not only need to shoot with the correct eye, but also keep both eyes open. For many, having both eyes open may make them see two barrels, but you have to know and trust which barrel is the correct one. Training yourself to shoot this way will give you better peripheral vision and depth perception while bird hunting.

Think you have a Master Eye problem?

Doug Florent has a lifetime's experience of gun fitting and shooting instruction - and he's got a bee in his bonnet about 'Master Eye problems'.

Why? Because, he says, 75% of people who've been told they have a Master Eye problem have no such thing - they've got a gun mounting or gun fit problem. In this video, he explains what that means.

Sight Alignment Sight Picture | What is it and Why does it Matter?

Are you looking to better understand Sight Alignment Sight PIcture?

SUBSCRIBE:

Every time I go to the range I see the same thing. People blasting away at the target, happy they even hit the paper. This is due to improper sight alignment and sight picture.

Sight Alignment is the process of aligning the front and rear sight to effectively send the bullet where you want it to go. The top of the front sight should be perfectly lined up with the top of the rear. You should also notice an equal gap between both sides of the front sight.

Next, we have a sight picture. This is when we have a proper sight alignment with that target in the back. During this process, your eye is attempting to look at three different objects at once. The rear sight, front sight, and the target. Your eye can only look at one object at a time, so which one is the most important? If your focus is on the target then the front and rear sight will be fussy and you will not be able to achieve proper sight alignment. If you focus on the rear sight, the front sight and target will be fussy again you will not be able to achieve proper sight alignment. We must focus on the front sight. Your rear sight will be slightly fussy and the target will be slightly fussy but you will be able to achieve a proper sight alignment.

It’s important to practice your sight alignment and sight picture during your dry weapons handling training. Make sure your firearm is unloaded, finger off the trigger and pointed in a safe direction. Practice alighting your sights with a target in the background. It’s critical to keep both eyes open during this training.

Part 1: How to Shoot a Pistol Accurately | Alien Gear Holsters | Shot IQ

SHOT IQ is a revolutionary brand of training courses to basically reteach you rifle, shotgun or pistol shooting. It was created by Joel Turner, the man behind Iron Mind Hunting. It doesn't teach the fundamentals of handgun shooting and accuracy, but instead hacks the mind to be more efficient for the purposes of shooting.

You can read all about the fundamentals of handgun accuracy in our Concealed Carry Training guide:

SHOT IQ relies on science to figure out how to get your brain to work better for the act of putting a shot on target. It relies heavily on the subconscious and proprioception, the body's own intrinsic awareness of itself and what the muscles must do to perform a task.

In essence, you already know how to shoot. Your eye and your hands know how to aim, you know how to align the sights and you know how to press the trigger. It's your conscious mind, focusing on getting all these little details right and anticipating the recoil, that screws it up.

You can check out SHOT IQ at:

A whole lot of what causes poor shooting is interference from the conscious mind. Don't screw this up. Don't slap the trigger. Get the sights aligned. What so many courses don't teach you is how to get yourself out of your own way, and letting your subconscious take over and make the shot. You already know how to do it.

SHOT IQ courses teach shooters how to deliberately decide to place a shot on the target, and also how to program their thought process to let it take place by letting the body do what it already knows how to do.

You can read more about SHOT IQ, and find the range gear needed to hone those shooting skills on the range at:

Colleene Answers Questions (Ep.63): Seeing Double Shooting Both Eyes Open

Colleene Answers Questions is a new series of videos intended to address both common and directly asked questions from viewers and those who frequent my Keeping the Piece Facebook page. Some questions may come from the comment sections on other videos. If you would like to ask me a question, please comment below or stop by the Facebook and post one there.

Today's question comes from KA 707GUnGirl and she says, Hi Colleene. I'm right handed and right eye dominant. With both eyes open and focusing on the target, I see double and the image on the left is correct. With both eyes open and focusing on the sights, again double, but the image on the right is correct. Should I be training my brain to react to the 'righter' image when I focus on my sights? Is it that simple?

Yes, it's that simple. The brain will eventually learn to ignore the incorrect image over time.

There is no stupid question when it comes to guns, self defense, and concealed carry. Most of the time when a question is asked, there are others wondering about the same exact thing. So, why not let everyone benefit from the answers to your questions. That's what we'll strive to do in this series.

I will only call the person by name if directly asked on YouTube, or if permission is given in email or via phone call/Facebook post. Otherwise, I will use a first name, or no name at all.

TRAINING TECH THURSDAY! Weak HAND Shooting

I received a question on weak hand shooting (or off hand...) and how to aim. When shooting one handed you need to compensate for the lack of support to control the recoil. I like to grip with the ring and pinky fingers as well as pinch with the thumb.

There are two good techniques for shooting one handed. The canted gun or bending the elbow slightly to engage your forearm.
