The Veer Dola Exercise is a replication of battles that were fought on similar mountains and slopes, during the 1999 Kargil war. The name ‘Veer Dola’ is a tribute to the HAWS instructor Lance Naik Dola Ram, who made the ultimate sacrifice by setting up ropes on steep cliffs and making way for the army on the impassable mountains.

Some of the highest battlefields like Siachen can be unforgiving even for the toughest soldiers; where low oxygen level and sub-zero temperatures make it one of the most hostile places to live in, let alone fight. At HAWS Gulmarg which is situated close to 9,000 feet above sea level, Indian Army men train to survive and fight in the world’s highest battleground at 20,000 feet.

Soldiers train for avalanche rescue at high altitude in Gulmarg

Gulmarg, Feb 10 (ANI): After nine Indian Army soldiers died in the Siachen glacier avalanche on February 3, High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) trainers held training rescue sessions for soldiers at high altitudes near Line of Control (LOC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg region. Major Varun Khujuria, instructor at HAWS, stated the soldiers deployed on the high altitudes are given proper training for handling natural calamities. He added that only HAWS carries out rescue operations throughout the Himalayas. Ajpal Singh, a trainee, said that it's a nine-week basic course, which trains the soldiers to survive on higher altitudes. Proper knowledge of skiing equipments is also given to the soldiers.

Climbing steep ice walls in Himalayan glacier

Indian school students are taught the basics of ice-craft and ice-climbing along the walls of a glacier above Manali, in Himachal Pradesh, India. The instructor wears a helmet and teaches them basic tip-top ice climbing techniques.

Mountaineering or mountain climbing is the sport, hobby or profession of hiking, skiing, depending on whether the route chosen is over rock, snow or ice. All require experience, athletic ability, and technical knowledge to maintain safety. The UIAA or Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme is the world governing body in mountaineering and climbing, addressing issues like access, medical, mountain protection, safety, youth and ice climbing.

The Himalayas, also Himalaya which literally means, Abode of the snow is a mountain range in Asia separating the plains of the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau. The Himalayan range is home to some of the planet's highest peaks, including the highest, Mount Everest. The Himalayas include over a hundred mountains exceeding 7,200 metres (23,600 ft) in height. By contrast, the highest peak outside Asia—Aconcagua, in the Andes— is 6,961 metres (22,838 ft) tall. The Himalayas have profoundly shaped the cultures of South Asia. Many Himalayan peaks are sacred in both Hinduism and Buddhism.

Besides the Greater Himalayas of these high peaks there are parallel lower ranges. The first foothills, reaching about a thousand meters along the northern edge of the plains, are called the Sivalik Hills or Sub-Himalayan Range. Further north is a higher range reaching two to three thousand meters known as the Lower Himalayan or Mahabharat Range. The Himalayas abut or cross five countries: Bhutan, India, Nepal, China, and Pakistan, with the first three countries having sovereignty over most of the range. The Himalayas are bordered on the northwest by the Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges, on the north by the Tibetan Plateau, and on the south by the Indo-Gangetic Plain.

Three of the world's major rivers, the Indus, the Ganges, and the Tsangpo-Brahmaputra all raise near Mount Kailash to cross and encircle the Himalayas. Their combined drainage basin is home to some 600 million people. Lifted by the subduction of the Indian tectonic plate under the Eurasian Plate, the Himalayan range runs, west-northwest to east-southeast, in an arc 2,400 kilometres (1,500 mi) long. Its western anchor, Nanga Parbat, lies just south of the northernmost bend of Indus river, its eastern anchor, Namcha Barwa, just west of the great bend of the Tsangpo river. The range varies in width from 400 kilometres (250 mi) in the west to 150 kilometres (93 mi) in the east.
