Why There Is A Memorial To Indian Soldiers In The Middle Of The English Countryside | Forces TV

Around 1.5 million Indian Army soldiers served alongside British troops during the First World War. More than 74,000 lost their lives. Hundreds of wounded Indian troops were hospitalised in the English town of Brighton, in sites such as the Royal Pavilion. The Hindus and Sikhs who died were cremated on the Sussex Downs and, in 1921, the Chattri memorial was constructed on the cremation site.

U.S. and Indian Soldiers Train at U.S. Military Base

Soldiers of the United States and India participated in a number of drills to boost cooperation between the armed forces of both countries, Sunday, September 15.

Contingents from both countries performed various army drills, exercises and yoga at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington D.C.

The bilateral exercise, known as Yudh Abhyas, is one of the largest joint running military training and defense corporation endeavors between India and the U.S.

The exercise will end on Wednesday with both countries undertaking a joint exercise using a U.N. peacekeeping scenario. (REUTERS)

Army kicks off raising of 2nd division under Mountain Strike Corps, plans exercise in Ladakh

The Indian Army may be currently busy with the volatile situation along the 778-km Line of Control with Pakistan, but it is slowly and steadily also building requisite deterrence along the 4,057-km Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
The 1.3-million strong Army has now kicked off the process to raise the second division of the new mountain strike corps for the northern borders with China despite an ongoing fund crunch, while it is also planning a high-altitude warfare exercise in Ladakh later this year.
Defence sources say the new 72 Infantry Division, with its headquarters at Pathankot, will become fully operational in three years. The division will now be being raised with one brigade in the beginning. But it will have three brigades when it is fully formed and operational in around three years, said a source.
The Army had formally begun to raise the new 17 Mountain Strike Corps in January 2014 to acquire quick-reaction ground offensive capabilities for the first time against China because its existing three strike corps were largely geared towards Pakistan.
The 17 Corps, with two new high-altitude infantry divisions as well as armoured, artillery, air defence, engineer brigades spread from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh, will be fully formed with 90,274 soldiers at a cost Rs 64,678 crore by 2021. All adversaries respect strength, which comes from having the capability to strike across the border, Army chief General Bipin Rawat had earlier told TOI.
Along with the Agni series of nuclear-capable ballistic missiles, and backed by the deployment of additional fighter jets, tanks, conventional BrahMos supersonic missiles and the like in the north-east, the 17 Corps is part of the overall plan to achieve credible deterrence against the People's Liberation Army (PLA).
China, incidentally, has re-organized its 2.3-million PLA into five theatre commands to crank up its offensive capabilities as well as establish better command-and-control structures. Its western theatre command now handles the entire LAC with India instead of the earlier Chengdu Military Region in the east and the Lanzhou Military Region towards the north, as was reported by TOI.
Under the new 17 Corps, the 59 Infantry Division was the first to be raised at Panagarh in West Bengal. With the 59 Division now almost fully operational, the focus now is on raising the new 72 Division. Initial planning for the 17 Corps to hold its first exercise at Ladakh in August-September is also now underway, said the source.
The Army, however, has struggled to raise the 17 Corps, which envisages as many as 30 new infantry battalions and two Para-SF units, often cannibalizing from its critical war wastage reserves (WWR) in absence of dedicated funding.
Another big problem has been the tardy pace of infrastructure development along the LAC. Only 24 of the 73 all-weather roads identified for construction along the LAC well over a decade ago, for instance, have been completed till now.
But the projected delivery of the bulk of the 145 M-777 ultra-light howitzers, which can be swiftly air-lifted to threatened high-altitude areas along the LAC, from March 2019 to June 2021 has come as a shot in the arm for the 17 Corps. The first two howitzers arrived in India on may 18 under the $737 million deal inked with the US government.

The Indian Armed Forces are the federal military forces of the Union of Republic of India. It consists of four professional uniformed services: the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and Indian Coast Guard. Additionally, the Indian Armed Forces are supported by two paramilitary organisations[13] (Assam Rifles and Special Frontier Force) and various inter-service institutions such as the Strategic Forces Command. The President of India is the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces. The Indian Armed Forces are under the management of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), which is led by the Union Cabinet Minister of Defence. With strength of over 1.3 million active personnel, it is world's 3rd largest military force and has the world's largest volunteer army.
The Indian Army is the land-based branch and the largest component of the Indian Armed Forces. The President of India serves as the Supreme Commander of the Indian Army, and it is commanded by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), who is a four-star General. Two officers have been conferred with the rank of Field marshal, a five-star rank, which is a ceremonial position of great honour. The Indian Army originated from the armies of the East India Company, which eventually became the British Indian Army, and the armies of the princely states, which finally became the national army after independence. The units and regiments of the Indian Army have diverse histories and have participated in a number of battles and campaigns across the world, earning a large number of battle and theatre honours before and after Independence.

The United States Army (USA) is the largest branch of the United States Armed Forces and performs land-based military operations. As a uniformed military service, the Army is part of the Department of the Army, which is one of the three military departments of the Department of Defense. The U.S. Army is headed by a civilian senior appointed civil servant, the Secretary of the Army (SECARMY), and by a chief military officer, the Chief of Staff of the Army (CSA) who is also a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In the fiscal year 2017, the projected end strength for the Regular Army (USA) was 460,000 soldiers; the Army National Guard (ARNG) had 335,000 soldiers, and the United States Army Reserve (USAR) had 195,000 soldiers; the combined-component strength of the U.S. Army was 990,000 soldiers. As a branch of the armed forces, the mission of the U.S. Army is to fight and win our Nation's wars, by providing prompt, sustained, land dominance, across the full range of military operations and the spectrum of conflict, in support of combatant commanders. The branch participates in conflicts worldwide and is the major ground-based offensive and defensive force of the United States.

Indian Air Force To Induct Woman Fighter Pilot In The Rafale Squadron | Indian Navy | Armed Forces

A woman fighter pilot is all set to be inducted in the Rafale squadron. The fighter pilot has been chosen from among Indian Air Force’s 10 current active woman fighter pilots. She is currently undergoing conversion training from MiG-21 Bison to the Rafale.

Women fighter pilots undergo an identical training regimen as their male counterparts. Once they are operational on a fighter type, they undergo conversion training, which as the phrase suggests, is a curriculum pilots need to take when they switch from flying one aircraft to another.

“Women fighter pilots are inducted and deployed in IAF as per strategic needs and operational requirements within the laid down policy, which is reviewed from time to time,” MoS Defence Subhash Bhamre had remarked in the parliament in the previous week.

Rafale fighter jets have begun to fly in the skies over the Ladakh region amidst the ongoing volatile situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Eastern Ladakh territory.

The IAF's first 5 Rafale fighters were ceremonially inducted into the Golden Arrows squadron on September 10 in Ambala. Since late August. More Rafales will be arriving in October and December, with all 36 on order to be inducted by late 2021.

Indian Navy has selected two women officers to join as Observers (Airborne Tacticians) in the helicopter stream. Lieutenant Kumudini Tyagi and Sub Lieutenant Riti Singh will be the first women officers in the Indian Navy to embark on Navy warships as part of ship's crew.

Can Women Join The PARA Special Forces? Can Girls Become PARA Commandos In Indian Army? Explained

Here is a video explaining all about Women Combat Roles In Indian Army - Can Women Join The PARA Special Forces? Can Girls Become PARA Commandos In Indian Army?

- Parachute Regiment :

The Parachute Regiment is the regiment of Indian Army which consists of PARA and PARA (SF) battalions. It is a volunteer force of the Indian Army. Only the comparatively young, physically fit and mentally robust, intelligent, innovative and highly motivated personnel hold on till the end and successfully accomplish the assigned operational tasks.

- Women in Para:

As of now, women are not commissioned into the fighting arms like Infantry, Mechanised Infantry and Armoured Corps. The fact that Parachute Regiment fall under Infantry leaves no opportunity for women officers to get commissioned into Parachute Regiment directly. But there’s a catch – women volunteers from outside the Para Regiment just like men.

This depends in the vacancies that come to the units of these officers, mostly non-combat arms like EME, Signals and ASC.

In this case, women are put through a probation of 28 days (clarification needed) and undergo para training and jumps to qualify for the maroon beret and para wings.

After training, they go back to their parental units and return to Para Training Center for carrying out refresher training and jumps.

But as far as the special forces are concerned, women can not join the Parachute Regiment as a SF soldier.

First Female Fighter Pilots of Indian Air Force Flying HAL HJT-16 Kiran Trainer Aircraft

NationalDefence Bureau,
New Delhi, 15 June 2016
The first batch of women Flight Cadets undergoing training for commissioning in Fighter Stream of Flying Branch will be passing out after successful completion of training. Combined Graduation Parade Spring Term -2016 for the flying cadets is scheduled to be held on 18 June 2016 at Air Force Academy, Hyderabad. Raksha Mantri Manohar Parrikar, who took the bold decision of allowing women into fighter stream will be the chief guest.
The three women Flying Cadets, Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh are on the verge of creating history in India for becoming the first female fighter pilots. Women are serving in Indian Air Force since 1991 and also flying transport aircrafts and helicopters. But this is for the first time that they are passing out in the fighter stream of Flying Branch. These three young women have undergone the mandatory 55 hours of flying on Stage I trainer, the Pilatus PC 7 basic trainer; thenStage II training on the Kiran Mark II; and finally graduated to the Advanced Jet Trainers (AJT) for fighter flying training.
These female fighter pilots have endured the 5 G + gravitational pull the body experiences while flying. Subsequently they will have to undergo 9 G+ pull during the final combat flight training.
The entry of women fighter pilots in Indian Air Force is experimental in the beginning. These daredevil female fighter pilots would carry out missions in the benign environment as they fly combat air patrols (CAPs) and protect Indian skies from hostile elements contrary to their male counterpart who can fly over enemy territory.
Earlier the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha on 83rd Anniversary of Indian Air Force declared that the women will be allowed in the fighter stream. The Ministry of Defence has finally approved the induction of women into the Fighter (Combat) stream of the IAF. It was a major policy decision given the Indian Society structure. Prime Minister Modi is understood to have been a driving force behind this historic decision and Defence Minister Parrikar was quick to execute the decision empoweing women in India.
Presently, the Indian Army is inducting women into the Signals, Engineers, Army Aviation (Air Traffic Control), Army Air Defence, Electronics & Mechanical Engineers, Army Service Corps, Army Ordinance Corps, Intelligence Corps, Army Education Corps and Judge Advocate Generals Branches/Cadres. The Indian Navy is inducting women in the Judge Advocate Generals, Logistics, Observer, Air Traffic Controller, Naval Constructor and Education branches/cadres. The IAF is presently inducting women in the Transport and Helicopter stream of the flying branch, Navigation, Aeronautical Engineering, Administration, Logistics, Accounts, Education and Meteorology branches. With this decision to open up induction of women in the fighter stream, women have become eligible for induction in all branches and streams of the IAF.
The Ministry of Defence has also taken up a comprehensive review pertaining to induction of women in Armed Forces, both in short service commission and permanent commission (SSC & PC) and once finalised more and more branches would be opened up for induction of women to give them the space which they deserve in the Armed Forces of the country.
There are currently 1500 women serving in the IAF, including 94 pilots and 14 navigators. For becomming a fighter pilot a girl should be graduate. They are not eligible to join India Air force (IAF) after 12th and also Girls are also not eligible to appear for the NDA exam. After Graduation, the frmale candidates can apply for the AFCAT (Airfroce Common Admission Test) exam to Become Pilot. Generally , the exam includes 3 Branches. 1) Technical Branch, 2) Flying Branch, and 3) Ground duty Branch. For Flying branch, age should be between 19-23 years only. Now, the female candidates can choose Fighter Stream under Flying Branch if they qualify.
These Flying Cadets may take another 2-3 years before they could actually be fully operational Fighter Pilots.
