Your Avatar or Your Life: Why you should delete Twitter and Facebook now

Have you watched the British science fiction show Black Mirror? Well, this year has felt like the scariest episode of Black Mirror ever. That’s why yesterday I deleted my Twitter and Facebook accounts, and why I think you should too. In this video I list some frightening reasons why I am fundamentally limiting and changing my use of social media and the internet.

How Technology Hijacks People’s Minds — from a Magician and Google’s Design Ethicist

When we pull our phone out of our pocket, we’re playing a slot machine to see what notifications we got.
When we pull to refresh our email, we’re playing a slot machine to see what new email we got.
When we swipe down our finger to scroll the Instagram feed, we’re playing a slot machine to see what photo comes next.
When we swipe faces left/right on dating apps like Tinder, we’re playing a slot machine to see if we got a match.
When we tap the # of red notifications, we’re playing a slot machine to what’s underneath.

Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas
Natasha Dow Schall

Drawing on fifteen years of field research in Las Vegas, anthropologist Natasha Dow Schüll shows how the mechanical rhythm of electronic gambling pulls players into a trancelike state they call the machine zone, in which daily worries, social demands, and even bodily awareness fade away. Once in the zone, gambling addicts play not to win but simply to keep playing, for as long as possible--even at the cost of physical and economic exhaustion. In continuous machine play, gamblers seek to lose themselves while the gambling industry seeks profit. Schüll describes the strategic calculations behind game algorithms and machine ergonomics, casino architecture and ambience management, player tracking and cash access systems--all designed to meet the market's desire for maximum time on device. Her account moves from casino floors into gamblers' everyday lives, from gambling industry conventions and Gamblers Anonymous meetings to regulatory debates over whether addiction to gambling machines stems from the consumer, the product, or the interplay between the two.

Use of protected disaggregated services such as Quitter.se, search engines that don’t track you like Duck Duck Go, email services that are not in the cloud, Tor browser, non-US-based VPNs, encryption, etc. This is not only for your privacy, it’s so you won’t be hacked.

When Your YouTube Career Feels Isolating

Being a full-time online creator looks great from the outside! Fame, popularity, money, and freedom. However, the nature of Internet fame makes it easy to neglect the real life relationships that keep you grounded. It's easy to start listening to all the positive affirmation online from people who see the moderated life we share online and lose the IRL relationships of people who actually know us, including our mistakes and weaknesses, and love us anyway.

Top Pitfalls that will End your YouTube Career

A lot of creators give up on YouTube or run into problems with their channels or personal lives that cause them to quit. If you want to be making videos on YouTube for a long time to come, it's worth learning from creators who have been doing it for a long time and have years of experience to share about what it takes to avoid the pitfalls that end people's YouTube careers.

In this video I interview 4 YouTube creators who have been active on the platform for over 10 years. They shared some of their advice about how to grow a YouTube channel that doesn’t fizzle out after a few years. If you want to be a creator who’s still relevant and growing 10 years from now, these guys know what it takes. They’ve seen a lot of creators rise and fall, many burn out, and some thrust into stardom too quickly. Learn from the guys who are still going after 10 years because they learned to pace themselves, adapt, and continue to grow on YouTube.

Would Fame Ruin You?

When we see celebrities in the news we often stick up our noses and think we would never fall into the same temptations if we were in the same position, but is that really true. Watch my video and tell me what you think!

My Process for Brainstorming, Shooting, and Posting Videos

After publishing more than 3,000 YouTube videos, I have a process that works well for me to be consistent with brainstorming, shooting, and posting new videos. The process varies for other channels I'm a part of, but this is what it looks like for the Video Creators channel, including where I record my ideas, how I setup the camera and lights in my house, and tools I use to work with my video editor.

How To Get more YouTube Views on a Video's First 24 Hours [VE S2 Ep. 03]

It appears that the more views a new YouTube video gets within its first 24 hours, the better it may perform overall in search, suggested videos, subscription feeds, and more. But what contributes to getting that boost of views within the first 24 hours? We'll share some ideas of what makes a video perform well immediately after it's published as well as how to get more views on your new videos right after you publish it.

Video Entrepreneurs is a live streamed show where six full-time YouTuber creators discuss issues in their businesses and channels and help each other (and you!) come up with ideas and answers that will move channels forward.

HOW TO BE A CREATOR

Ever wanted to know what it takes to make it as a hotshot creator on YouTube? Well, here's how! I outline exactly what you need and how you can become a creator just like your favorite YouTubers. Granted, I have an almost abysmal subscriber count and I'm definitely not qualified to be giving any kinf of advice but FUCK IT!

I went to VidCon 2016 recently and discovered that there's a common theme among all the creators. Watch my video where I interviewed loads of creators last year and you'll see what I mean:

The price of shame | Monica Lewinsky

In 1998, says Monica Lewinsky, “I was Patient Zero of losing a personal reputation on a global scale almost instantaneously.” Today, the kind of online public shaming she went through has become a constant. In a brave talk, she takes a look at our “culture of humiliation,” in which online shame equals dollar signs — and demands a different way.
