Top Foods That Bloat You (Stomach and Face Bloating)

Facial Bloating

Facial bloating is most prominent in the morning upon waking up (cause you’ve been lying down → gravity), however, it can continue throughout the day

Cause - Dehydration

Dehydration - Sleep

Many people incorrectly assume that high water consumption leads to bloating - In reality, dehydration results in fluid retention, particularly in the face (sleeping results in mild dehydration)

It makes urine output decrease and instead of processing liquid out of the body, the water is reabsorbed into the tissue. When this occurs, swelling, and possibly pain, will result

In other words, dehydration causes a buildup of fluid in the tissues and causes blood vessels to enlarge, which gives the face a “puffy” look

Dehydration - Sodium

High sodium intake is the number one culprit for fluid retention - the typical american diet is plagued with excessive sodium levels

The job of the kidneys is to filter the excess sodium into the urine so that the body can get rid of it - Sodium attracts water to it and is known as being osmotic.

Water follows the sodium and is drawn into the bloodstream. Excessive salt keeps the circulatory volume higher than it should be, creating and increased pressure in the blood stream and pressing on the blood vessel walls (5)

One way to flush sodium out of the body is by getting more potassium - We average 2,500 mg a day, about half of the 4,700 mg minimum recommended for adults

Potassium blunts the effects of sodium by helping relax the walls of blood vessels - The more potassium we eat, the more sodium we pass out of the body through urine.

Cream of Tartar: Cream of tartar, also called potassium hydrogen tartrate, provides a bioavailable form of potassium rather than taking a potassium supplement

One teaspoon of cream of tartar = 495 mg of potassium

Note: Most people don’t realize that fresh and frozen poultry is sometimes injected with a sodium solution - so check the label

Stomach Bloating

Stomach bloating is the result of gas or fluid accumulating in your GI tract, or when bacteria in your large intestine have a hard time breaking down certain foods

The most common type of foods that cause stomach bloating are high FODMAP foods.

FODMAP is an acronym that stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols

Since your body is unable to completely digest these sugar molecules, they travel through your GI tract and reach your colon undigested, where the bacteria that live in your colon begin to ferment them. The fermentation can produce gas and bloating

Raw Cruciferous Vegetables (Kale, Broccoli, Cabbage)

Cruciferous veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, etc.) cause bloating and gas when eaten in their raw form - extremely high in insoluble fiber, which can be difficult for your body to break down.

Cooking vegetables helps break down the fibers they contain, which makes them easier on the digestive system because they’re already partly broken down.

Cruciferous veggies also contain raffinose, a sugar molecule - Raffinose cannot be broken down in the small intestine as humans lack the alpha-galactosidase enzyme required to break it down. It passes through your GI tract completely undigested.

Once it reaches the large intestine though, the bacteria there thrive on it and ferment raffinose into large volumes of hydrogen, methane and other gases.

Fermented Veggies: Sauerkraut, kim chi, sauerruben and curtido are excellent alternatives for people with gut issues. First, the fermentation process “pre-digests” the vegetables and makes them easier to absorb. Second, fermented veggies contain probiotic microorganisms that help heal the gut

Foods to Avoid if You Have a Stomach Ulcer

While antibiotics and antacids may be needed to treat a stomach ulcer, there are certain foods that can exacerbate the symptoms including pain, a burning sensation, indigestion, gas, nausea and vomiting.

A stomach ulcer, also known as a peptic ulcer, occurs when open sores develop on the inner lining of the stomach

or the upper portion of the small intestine.

The most common symptom of a peptic ulcer is stomach pain. Stomach acid makes the pain worse, as does having an empty stomach. Other symptoms include a feeling of fullness, bloating, fatty food intolerance, heartburn, weakness, loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss.

It is important to consult your doctor if you think you have a stomach ulcer. Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic to treat the bacterial infection and recommend antacids to reduce the acid in the digestive tract.

At the same time, you need to watch what you eat. There is no specific diet prescription for a stomach ulcer, but you can keep symptom flare-ups to a minimum and promote faster recovery by limiting or avoiding certain foods.

Here are some of the foods to avoid if you suffer from a stomach ulcer.

If you're seriously trying to lose belly fat then you already know that diet is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle. With a proper diet plan where you're eating the right foods in the right amounts you'll strip off layer after layer of body fat and say goodbye to that belly forever. However, if you're eating the wrong things you'll only be setting yourself back further and further. With an improper diet plan you'll have to get used to loosening your belt notch after notch because your belly fat will be there to stay. So to ensure that you aren't making any mistakes with the food you're selecting I want to go over the 20 best foods that you should be eating regularly to lose that belly fat for good. The first food I want to start with is the avocado. Unlike other fruits that are loaded with carbs, Avocados are full of healthy monounsaturated fats specifically oleic acid. They are also full of fiber which will help you feel full for longer. Another great thing about avocados that was discovered during a study from The Ohio State University at Columbus is that avocados help you absorb more cartenoids from fruits and vegetables, up to 15x more to be exact. So not only will avocados help you burn fat, but you'll also be strengthening your immune system and absorbing more cancer fighting cartenoids than ever. Next we have eggs. Eggs are great to incorporate into your diet plan because they’re high in protein, high in healthy fats and they can help you feel full for a very low amount of total calories. Eggs are also one of the most bioavailable sources of protein out there. Meaning that your body can very efficiently digest, absorb, and assimilate the protein found in eggs. Having a solid protein source like eggs in your diet will help you prevent muscle loss while you eat less calories to create enough of a deficit to burn fat. Lets move on to one of the best fruits you can eat while trying to lose belly fat...berries. Compared to most other fruits berries are very low in carbohydrates, while being full in vitamins and antioxidants. These antioxidants can help improve blood flow delivering more oxygen to your muscles and your cells in general. Ultimately this can hep improve your workouts while assisting with the fat loss process. The best low carb berries to eat are blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries. Blueberries are going to be a bit higher in carbs, so to keep calories low stick with the other 3. The next food isn't really a food, but instead its a drink that's been proven very effective at helping you fight that belly cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar has been shown to help people lose weight and waist circumference. These aren't they typical animal studies that you constantly see that don't necessarily guarantee the same results for people. Instead these are human studies. One of these studies was 12 weeks long and it demonstrated that obese individuals could lose anywhere from 2.6 to 3.7 pounds just by consuming 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar per day. It has also been shown to improve blood sugar spikes after meals, and it can help increase fullness after a meal. In fact one study showed that taking apple cider vinegar with a high carb meal could result in people eating 200 to 275 less calories for the day. Keep in mind, you want to make sure that you dilute only one to two tablespoons of the apple cider vinegar in water. Don't drink it straight up. Next I have another high protein food for you and that's tuna. Tuna is a very lean fish that's pretty much entirely made up of protein. This makes tuna a great option to increase protein intake without increasing calorie intake too much. The important thing is if you're buying canned tuna you want to make sure you get the tuna in water not oil. If you get it in oil then all the extra calories that you save from this low fat fish will be canceled out. Fish in general is a great option for when you're trying to burn fat

Top 3 Foods to Help Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Stomach Issues

Top Three Foods for IBS

What is IBS?

IBS is a cluster of symptoms, including cramping, diarrhea, constipation, bloating and gas.

The exact cause of IBS is not understood, leading to difficulties in treatment.
● It does appear that IBS is more common in more developed countries

Likely factors that may lead to IBS include:
● Intestinal microbiota imbalance
● Inflammation
● Intestinal infections
● Serotonin imbalance

One common recommendation is the low FODMAP diet, where one avoids foods that contain fermentable carbohydrates
● It is thought that these foods can lead to increased liquid in the intestine and then to diarrhea, as well as bloating and gas
● Restrictive diet where it is nearly impossible to get sufficient vitamins and minerals
● No conclusive research showing this to help

Different foods may cause symptoms for different people
● Pay attention to personal triggers
● Keeping a food journal can help

If there is no exact science as to what foods to avoid, is there any supporting foods to consume?

Top 3 Foods for IBS

1. Turmeric

Curcumin, the most active component of turmeric, displays the following health benefits:
● Anti-inflammatory properties
● Anti-bacterial properties
● Spasmolytic activities

Case Study

A 2004 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that turmeric extract improved IBS symptoms; the study was not placebo controlled

207 volunteers with IBS were given either one or two tablets of turmeric extract daily for 8 weeks and then reported their symptoms.

A significant reduction in reported pain and symptoms occurred, however there was no difference between the groups. Roughly ⅔ of participants reported a decrease in their symptoms following treatment.

2. Peppermint Oil

Many studies exists showing the potential for improvement of IBS symptoms with peppermint oil

Case Study

A 2014 study published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology reviewed peer reviewed published studies on peppermint oil and IBS symptoms and found peppermint oil more effective than placebo for improvement of both abdominal pain and global IBS symptoms

One possible problem with peppermint oil is an increase in heartburn symptoms, although this side effect occurred less frequently than did improvement of IBS symptoms, so still good for most of those who suffer with IBS.

It is well known that the population of gut bacteria can have an impact on our health

People with IBS usually have gut flora that has changed, so foods that encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut is likely to help IBS symptoms

Case Study

A 2000 study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology found an improvement in IBS symptoms

Recruited 60 otherwise healthy patients with IBS and split them into a control group and a test group. The test group received Lactobacillus plantarum daily for 4 weeks.

The test group experienced improved flatulence during the 4 weeks and better GI function when compared to the control group 12 months after the experiment.

Lactobacillus plantarum is the most prevalent bacteria found in sauerkraut, a food made from fermented cabbage.

Other probiotic foods include miso, kimchi, kombucha, yogurt, and coconut kefir

It may not always be right to eat what we feel like! The first thing we eat in the morning sets forth the course of the day. Certain foods may wreak havoc with your gut if eaten on an empty stomach.

1. Spicy food
Eating spices and chillies on an empty stomach may irritate the stomach lining which can lead to acidic reactions and cramps. They are pungent in nature and can trigger indigestion.

2. Sugary foods or drinks
Though majority of us are under the impression that it is healthy to have a glass of fruit juice to start your day, it may not be the case. Dr. Rupali suggests not to start your day with a tall glass of fruit juice as it may put an extra load on the pancreas that are still waking up after long hours of rest.

3. Aerated drinks
Aerated drinks are bad for our health no matter what time of the day it may be, but they are even worse when consumed on an empty stomach as the carbonated acids mix with the stomach acids causing various health issues like nausea and gas. Your stomach excretes acid to help in the digestion of your food, and if there’s no food in your tummy,

4. Cold beverages
You must have heard that it is best to start the day with warm water and honey, yet many of us give into the temptation of chugging a glass of iced coffee instead. Drinking iced beverages on an empty stomach may damage your mucous membrane and make your digestion sluggish through the day whereas lukewarm beverages help kick starting your system and your metabolism.

5. Citrus fruits
Fruits are always very healthy if they are eaten at the right time. Eating citrus fruits on an empty stomach may increase acid production. Moreover, too much fiber and fructose in fruits can also make slow down your digestive system if eaten on an empty stomach.

6. Raw vegetables
This one is specially for those who are diet conscious and believe that salads are great anytime of the day. Raw vegetables or a salad may not be the best thing to eat on an empty stomach. They are full of coarse fiber which may put an extra load on an empty stomach

7. Coffee
Starting the day with a cup of coffee is a very common practice. It seems to be an easy way of breaking from sleep, but drinking coffee on an empty stomach may lead to acidity.
