Are you wondering how long it takes to digest different foods?

In this video we go through how fast or slow foods digest and how long it stays inside your stomach.

Different foods leave you feeling full for different amounts of time, Some digest really quick while some stay
for quite some time.

There is an index called the Glycemic index and this index can tell us how long or quick something takes to digest and leave your stomach.

Foods that has a high index value digests faster and low index vaue food stick around in your stomach a longer time.

So this means that if you eat foods that are high on the index scale you will be hungry pretty soon again and head back to the kitchen.

If you're mainly eating these foods you might be over-eating since you get hungry more often and eat more than you should.

Foods that are on the low end of the index release their nutrients slower which leaves you feeling full for longer.

Lets see then, what foods do take a long time to digest?

Some foods in this category are vegetables, like carrots, they contain complex carbs which gives it a low value on the index
and will take a while to digest.

many fruits such as apples, mangos and oranges also fit into this category.

Some bread such as whole grain and flatbread.

Cashews, peanuts and even spaghetti, all these digest slowly.

Then we have foods that we can put in the medium, ones that dont digest quick nor slow.

Potatoes are high on the index making them quick to digest, it's the same with regular white bread.

Fish foe example can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour to digest.

Some foods aren't on the index at all since the index requires foods to contain carbs, meat is one of these foods and they can
stay in your stomach from 2 to 5 hours.

So in the future you can throw on some low index foods such as bell peppers on top of your bread if you want to stay
away from another round of food.

Dehydration - Sodium

High sodium intake is the number one culprit for fluid retention - the typical american diet is plagued with excessive sodium levels

The job of the kidneys is to filter the excess sodium into the urine so that the body can get rid of it - Sodium attracts water to it and is known as being osmotic.

Water follows the sodium and is drawn into the bloodstream. Excessive salt keeps the circulatory volume higher than it should be, creating and increased pressure in the blood stream and pressing on the blood vessel walls (5)

One way to flush sodium out of the body is by getting more potassium - We average 2,500 mg a day, about half of the 4,700 mg minimum recommended for adults

Potassium blunts the effects of sodium by helping relax the walls of blood vessels - The more potassium we eat, the more sodium we pass out of the body through urine.

The most common type of foods that cause stomach bloating are high FODMAP foods.

FODMAP is an acronym that stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols

Since your body is unable to completely digest these sugar molecules, they travel through your GI tract and reach your colon undigested, where the bacteria that live in your colon begin to ferment them. The fermentation can produce gas and bloating

Raw Cruciferous Vegetables (Kale, Broccoli, Cabbage)

Cruciferous veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, etc.) cause bloating and gas when eaten in their raw form - extremely high in insoluble fiber, which can be difficult for your body to break down.

Cooking vegetables helps break down the fibers they contain, which makes them easier on the digestive system because they’re already partly broken down.

Cruciferous veggies also contain raffinose, a sugar molecule - Raffinose cannot be broken down in the small intestine as humans lack the alpha-galactosidase enzyme required to break it down. It passes through your GI tract completely undigested.

Once it reaches the large intestine though, the bacteria there thrive on it and ferment raffinose into large volumes of hydrogen, methane and other gases.

Fermented Veggies: Sauerkraut, kim chi, sauerruben and curtido are excellent alternatives for people with gut issues. First, the fermentation process “pre-digests” the vegetables and makes them easier to absorb. Second, fermented veggies contain probiotic microorganisms that help heal the gut

Put the drink down! Now! I’m kidding, you don’t need to stop drinking beer that urgently. Just know that the beverage has some pretty negative effects on your stomach. The average bottle of Corona carries with it 148 calories, while a Budweiser has as many as 200. These beers can carry a minimum of 13g of carbohydrates.

To put it simply, ice cream has lactose. Did you know lactose intolerance effects between 30 and 50 million Americans? While we’ve all heard of this “lactose intolerance”, many aren’t educated as to what lactose actually is? Lactose is a distinct sugar that is only found in dairy products, and it can be really harmful to your stomach. Similar to beer, if all your consuming is ice cream, your stomach may begin to bloat. But that’s not it. Dairy products in general are known to have significant effects on your gut’s microorganisms.

6. Chips
Like French fries, potato chips are another salty side you can easily lose track of. The average bag of chips contains 274 calories along with 24 g of carbs and 262 mg of sodium. And that’s just regular potato flavour. Think about all the other garbage you’re putting into your stomach when eating salt and vinegar or barbeque!

7. Eggs
This popular breakfast choice is one that may be hard to shake for many of you. It certainly is for me. While eggs straight from the chicken may not be harmful, farm-raised eggs are a different story. These eggs may not be equipped with the proper antibiotics known to be found in regular eggs.

8. Corn
At this point, you’re probably thinking, “Hey, corn is delicious and healthy for you. How can it possibly cause harm to your stomach?” Well corn is a vegetable, so obviously there are going to be benefits. Number 10. The Ackee Fruit
In Jamaica, the akee fruit is a mixed blessing. Though originally native to West Africa, it migrated to
Jamaica in 1778 and is now the country's national fruit. In fact, it is one of the main ingredients of
Jamaica’s national dish; ackee and salt fish which is prepared with salt cod and sautéed onion, scotch
bonnet peppers, tomatoes, and boiled ackee fruit. When prepared properly, the dish is perfectly safe to
consume and enjoyed by many.
If improperly eaten, though, ackee can cause what has been dubbed the Jamaican Vomiting Sickness,
which, other than the self-explanatory symptoms, can lead to coma or death. Unripe ackee fruit
contains a poison called hypoglycin, so preparers must be careful to wait until the fruit's protective pods
turn red and open naturally. Once open, the only edible portion is the yellow arilli, which surround
always-toxic black seeds.

Number 9. African Bullfrog
The African bullfrog may not look very appetizing, but it is considered a delicacy in Namibia. In fact,
bullfrog dishes can be considered the country’s specialty. While it’s pretty common to see people eating
deep fried frog’s legs, in Namibia, they baked them and eat them whole.
While eating frogs is normally safe, the danger lies when eating the premature African bullfrog. Eating
these prepubescent frogs can lead to painful urinary inflammation caused by the millions of bacteria
that they carry. Aside from that, some of these frogs carry a toxin in enough concentration that when
eaten, can lead to kidney failure.
So, if find yourself craving for frog, stay safe and go for the good old fashioned deep fried frog legs.

Number 8. Cassava
Not really as exotic as other inclusions in this list, but still quite dangerous. Perhaps the most dangerous
considering the toxin contained within it.
Cassava, also referred to as yuca or manioc, or tapioca to Americans, has become a popular flour
alternative for making gluten-free breads. Sometimes, the food is eaten similarly to a potato. But don’t
eat cassava unless it’s been prepared properly.
Cassava is a starchy root that flourishes in the tropical climates of Central and South America, the
Caribbean, and West Africa, but it is more familiar to Americans in its dried and powdered form: tapioca.

The plant is dangerously toxic when consumed raw because it contains cyanogenic glucosides, which
trigger the release of hydrogen cyanide.
There have been many documented deaths from eating this deadly root. In 2005, 27 children died while
100 others were hospitalized from eating improperly prepared cassava roots, in their school of all
places. Although most cassava poisoning incidents is easily treatable, the nearest hospital from the
schools was 30 km away, making immediate care impossible.
Cassava should be soaked and fermented for at least a day before it’s cooked, but some sweet varieties
of cassava inherently contain less cyanogenic glucosides and are safe to eat after simply cooking them
thoroughly.

Number 7. Casu Marzu
The most dangerous cheese in the world, casu marzu is an Italian delicacy defined by its illegal status
and the maggots that infest it. Casu marzu comes from the Italian island of Sardinia, located in the
Mediterranian Sea. The cheese is made from sheep’s milk and it takes some time to make, but the
process itself is easy. When it’s finished, a casu marzu cheese should roughly contain thousands of
maggots.
If that isn’t horrifying enough, you’re supposed to eat this cheese while the maggots are living. Sardinian
tradition holds that once the maggots are dead, the cheese is unsafe to eat. But the risk of eating
maggots alive is that they may burrowing into your stomach which can cause a condition called enteric
myiasis that involves severe stomach cramps and nausea.
