02 - Why is 3-Phase Power Useful? Learn Three Phase Electricity

Here we learn why 3 Phase Power systems are useful for supplying large blocks of electricity and for supplying power to rotating motors. We learn that when you calculate the total power delivered to a motor over the three phases, the total power is constant even though each phase has a time varying power component.

This means that the motor will run more smoothly with less vibration and is why in practice three phase motors are commonly used in industrial equipment.

An electrical motor is such an electromechanical device which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. In the case of three-phase AC operation, the most widely used motor is 3 phase induction motor as this type of motor does not require any starting device or we can say they are self-starting induction motors. For better understanding, the principle of three phase induction motor, the essential constructional feature of this motor must be known to us. This Motor consists of two major parts: the Stator of a 3 Phase Induction Motor, and the Rotor of a 3 Phase Induction Motor.

Three phase induction motor is such an electromechanical device which converts electrical energy into a mechanical energy. In case of three phase AC operation, most usually used motor is Three phase induction motor as this type of motor does not need any starting device or we can say they are self-starting induction motor.
The stator of the motor consists of overlapping winding offset by an electrical angle of 120°. When the primary winding or the stator is connected to a 3 phase AC source, it establishes a rotating magnetic field which rotates at the synchronous speed.
Thus the three phase induction motor is:
• Self-starting.
• Less armature reaction and brush sparking because of the absence of commutators and brushes that may cause sparks.
• Robust in construction.
• Economical.
• Easier to maintain.

Working Principle of 3 Phase Induction Motor

This EzEd video explains the Working Principle of a 3-Phase Induction Motor

High Speed 3 Phase Induction Motor from Washing Machine

I found an old washing machine (Whirlpool I believe) and discovered it had a 3 phase induction motor in it. The washer was a regular 120 volt type machine. The motor was controlled by a proprietary VFD that I couldn't figure out how to run. (I even put an oscilloscope on a similar washer while running, but couldn't duplicate the signal). So I bought a $60 VFD on eBay. The motor was unusual that it ran on 195 volts (not 120 or 240) and was rated for 310 Hz (not 60 Hz as supplied by the power company). The VFD is capable of delivering up to 1000 Hz supposedly, so the 310 Hz shouldn't be a problem, and using a variac and 5 kVA transformer I was able to produce 200 volts for the VFD.
