How to Pick the Best Blogging Platform in 2020

If you're looking to create a blog but can't figure out which platform is best for you, then you're watching the right video. It's a tough choice with multiple factors depending on your preferences. In this video, we will give you an overview of the different blogging platforms, our preference, and a few extra tips and discounts!

Links mentioned in this video:

WeeblyToWP

When you're selecting the best blogging platform for you, you would want to keep in mind the ease of use, how beginner friendly the platform is, the available features, and how much room you have to grow.

Our primary recommendation is a WordPress.org site for your maximum control, breadth of features, and thousands of themes to style your site. However, with that control, you are in charge of maintenance, updates, and backups of your site.

Wix has plenty of built in functionality, is a fully hosted platform, and has dozens of templates. They do have the negatives of showing their branding on your site, their ads on your site, and making it difficult to move away from their platform should you decide to move in the future.

WordPress.com is a hosted platform of WordPress that gives you similar tools to a WordPress.org site with some limitations as they manage a large portion of the maintenance and upkeep of the site. THe drawback being you can't run ads and you don't own your blog so if you violate their posting guidelines then they can remove your site.

Blogger is a Google product that is free to use and blog on which means it has the security tools of Google themselves. However, it has limited features and Google has been known to stop supporting different products of theirs in the past.

Tumblr is a micro blogging service that's free and easy to use and integrated with social media from the start. Similar to blogger there are limited features and it is difficult to migrate your content to another platform as needed.

Medium is geared for specifically writing for free and shares your articles with writers in their network. This limits the features available, limits you to Medium's audience, and you can't monetize the site easily.

Squarespace allows you to build a site with drag and drop features, ecommerce compatibility, and beautiful templates. They do have limited features and integrations available and limit you to 20 pages.

Ghost is the minimalist blogging platform that helps you to focus on writing with a clutter free interface. There is a lack of customizations, integrations, and themes, and it is a difficult installation if you are not using their specific hosting.

Finally, there is Weebly with a drag and drop interface that hosts everything for you with their different plans. Like some of the other platforms there are few features, third-party integrations, and migrating to a different service can be difficult.

How to Start a Blog in 2020 – Easy Guide for Beginners

Get the free and easy step-by-step beginner’s guide on how to start a blog:

Starting a blog doesn’t have to be difficult, and it doesn’t require any technical knowledge. Just follow the steps in the free blog tutorial to learn how to build a blog that fits your needs.

There are 3 basic steps to starting your blog:

1. Pick a name for your blog
This is a big decision, as this is the first thing every new visitor to your blog will see.
You may have heard various suggestions on how to choose a domain name, but there is really just one rule you need to follow: Be Descriptive!
More info on choosing a good blog name in Step #1 at TheBlogStarter.com

2. Install your blog software
Once you’ve picked out a name you will need to register it and get web hosting, which I show you how to do in the video (at about 6:32), or in Step #2 at TheBlogStarter.com
Once that’s done, it’s time to install your blog software. I highly recommend you use a free blogging software called WordPress. It’s what I show you how to use in the WordPress tutorial for beginners in the video above.

With your WordPress blog installed you are ready to start writing blog posts! This is very easy to do, and I show you how to do things like add images and categorize your posts in the video tutorial (starting at 24:30).

Once you complete those three steps your blog will be fully functional. Of course, there is a ton of other stuff you can do with your blog. One of the coolest things you can do is customize the entire design. This is very easy to do, and I walk you through the process starting at about 32:30 of the video. I'm gonna share with you the perfect formula that I follow for my own blog. It works for a B2C ,B2B, a personal blog or a corporate blog, it works for everything. I kid you not, it is the best formula out there. First tip: Start off with a title. Don't just start writing a blog post, unless you have the exact title, do not write your blog post.

The second step that you need to follow when it comes to writing a blog post is the introduction. In your introduction, you need to hook people with a bold statement. It's also about talking about what's gonna be covered in the post. Just give them a quick overview on what you're gonna teach them, is a great way to hook them in, as well, to get them to go more into your blog post, read more, and ideally, even leave a comment at the end of your post. Now that we got the introduction done, let's get into your body. Your body should include subheadings. Keep in mind, you want your content easy to skim. If people can't skim it, you're not gonna do well. In your body, use subheadings, and keep your paragraphs around five to six lines max. In addition to that, when you're writing your content in your body, you'll notice that at least on neilpatel.com, I link out to other people. That's part of my formula, it's not just about linking to your own site, it's about linking to other sites. Because what happens is when you link to other websites, you open up your sources, you're citing them, it creates more credibility for you, makes you and your business look more as an expert, and that's what you wanna be perceived at when you're writing content.

Last but not least, you wanna wrap up your post with a conclusion. The conclusion summarizes what your post was about, and you end your conclusion with a question. By ending with the question, more people are more likely to leave a comment. When they leave a comment, it creates engagement. By getting engagement, you're much more likely to generate sales. If people read your blog but they don't engage with you, they're not likely than to become a lead, or buy your products, or your services. So it's really important you end with a question. And here's what we found with conclusions. Brazing Crazy Egg, we use a scroll mat feature, and what we found through testing was, a lot of people read blog posts, when they first land on them, they quickly scroll to the bottom, check out the conclusion, and then they go back up and read the rest, assuming they like the conclusion. So with your conclusion, make sure you label it Conclusion. Don't get fancy, keep it simple. Just call it a good ole' conclusion. And that's my formula to writing blog posts! It's not that hard. Now one thing I did mention within this whole process of writing blog posts, that you need to link up to other sites. And here's a bonus tip: I know this goes a bit above just writing, but very few people do it. When you link up to other people, it flatters them. People love getting back-links, because when you link out to someone, it drives in more traffic. Especially when you're linking to them in a positive way. Hopefully you're not bashing people in your blog post. Stay above that. So when you link up to them, shoot them an e-mail. Hey Curtis, I have to say I am a huge fan of your work, so much so I linked out to you in my latest blog post. You can check it out here. Cheers, Neil. P.S. If you shared it, it would make my day. That's it. A lot of people who get linked out to, including me, don't mind sharing articles on Twitter. It drives the blog owner traffic, and it makes the person you link to look great!
