How to find and do work you love | Scott Dinsmore | TEDxGoldenGatePark (2D)

Scott Dinsmore's mission is to change the world by helping people find what excites them and build a career around the work only they are capable of doing. He is a career change strategist whose demoralizing experience at a Fortune 500 job launched his quest to understand why 80% of adults hate the work they do, and more importantly, to identify what the other 20% were doing differently. His research led to experiences with thousands of employees and entrepreneurs from 158 countries. Scott distilled the results down to his Passionate Work Framework - three surprisingly simple practices for finding and doing work you love, that all happen to be completely within our control. He makes his career tools available free to the public through his community at

Scott Dinsmore | How to find work you love (Short Version)

This edited short version of the late Scott Dinsmore's talk focuses on the key points he outlines in his talk about how to pursue work that you love:

1st thing is to become an expert on yourself
-Analyze your strengths, find out what you naturally enjoy doing without necessarily getting paid for it.
-Discover your values: What is Success for you? Is it being very rich? Very healthy? Having a big family?
-Experiences: Keep a log of your experiences. When did things go right for you? When did they go wrong? Why? Who have you met that's inspired you? Why?

2nd do the impossible
-Challenge yourself more and more. The more you accomplish, the more you realize you CAN accomplish
If you have trouble getting up a flight of stairs, but after training hard you were able to run a marathon, what other impossible things would start to look possible?

3rd surround yourself by the right people
-Make friends with people who are positive and doing the things that you wish you could be doing. Your environment is definitely something you can change
-Do you have any negative people in your life? Get rid of them - they're not helping you
-Going back to point #2, if you're surrounded by people who are constantly doing inspiring things and that becomes normal, they your mindset will change from
How can possibly I do this? to How can I possibly NOT do this?

These are all things you can control, so figure out what it is you need to do and do it.

Here is a dilemma for you Eric ... I don't know I think I have entrepreneurial a.d.d. ... I started out a few years ago thinking that I wanted to start shop to work on cars bikes etc... I have been tinkering on cars from the age of 12 on I'm 22 now.. I went out got a job in the industry really enjoyed it ended up starting my own shop about 5 months ago and now I couldn't be more bored of it I still enjoy working on cars and it's always going to be a hobby of mine but everyday it's just becoming tedious and annoying . So I ended up quitting the business and working for a company doing the same exact thing which is actually more fun that way for me because I enjoy being around people. And the shop I had it was literally just me and I had my girlfriend coming after her job and help do silly little things. But even now I'm truly not satisfied. I like the feeling of owning my own business and knowing that it's all under the control of my own hands. I really don't know why I feel that way but its just the way it is. I think I'm going to start heading in the direction of being around people maybe buying and selling items may be some sort of a retail business. I might start buying and selling instruments for I have played music also for my whole life. I guess what I'm wrapping it all up to question you is what do you think I should do. I feel like I'm never going to find the right direction. I'm really hoping that this all pans out and I enjoy the next path I attempted to go down. But everybody is telling me hey stick with something and it's actually starting to make me worry I do have to settle down some point in time I have bills and an apartment. But I really enjoy cars I really enjoy music and I enjoy buying and selling things retail wise I enjoy being around people and I enjoyed festivals and festivities I'm just lost in the sauce on what path to go down any advice?

Scott Dinsmore: Discover Your Personal Legend and Start Your Journey

Whatever happened to all the real men?

Oh, we see plenty of masculine imagery in movies and TV. Healthy, successful, attractive guys with gorgeous women hanging all over them.

We yearn to be those men – but these images don’t tell us how to become like them. Maybe we try to fake it by buying a nice suit or an expensive car – but deep down, we know we’re just pretending, so nothing really changes.

I used to be a guy like that too – faking my way through life, bored at my job, always in the “friend zone” with the women I wanted… dreaming big and hoping next year would be different but living all too small.

That all changed when I found out where the REAL male mentors are… built strong friendships with them… and let them teach me how to take back my masculine power once and for all.

These powerful men told me things my father never told me… about women, finance, physical health, and how to become the strongest version of myself. And after a decade of intensive mentorship, I now want to pass this knowledge on to you.

It’s time to shatter your chains, and start living the life you know you deserve – as a strong grounded man.

I’m offering my exclusive 90-minute, 30-video training course on becoming a strong, grounded man… absolutely FREE, for a very limited time.

Scott Dinsmore is the founder and Chief Experimenter at LiveYourLegend.

Scotts an entrepreneur, coach, ultra-runner and travel photographer obsessed with adventure, life experiments and learning. He also has a small problem listening to authority… And if we’re talking technical jargon, then you could call him a Career Change Strategist. But he prefers Explorer, Adventurer or Experimenter…

Scott’s on a mission to change the world by helping people find what excites them and build a career around the work only they are capable of doing.

Early Challenge

After Scott graduated from college he wasn’t able to get a job so he traveled to Europe. He came back and got a job at a global company where he found himself working for about 2 hours a day and then pretending to be busy for the rest of the day. This job was unfulfilling and Scott found himself operating under a script that someone else had written for him.

Ah-Hah Moment

Scott heard this quote and began to ponder:

“Taking a job to build up your resume is like saving sex for old age.” – Warren Buffett.

Scott moved to San Francisco, CA where he met people who were making a great living doing work they were passionate about. Scott changed his environment and it changed everything. His path to self discovery, entrepreneurship and making an impact that only he could make began.

TEDxUW - Tanya De Mello - Here's how you get a job at the UN

Whether acting as a United Nations Field Officer or as a local student volunteer, Tanya De Mello's work has always been focused on building communities. Whether it's through creating community service initiatives at universities, managing humanitarian aid donations in Senegal or assisting with refugee relocation planning, Tanya excels at bringing people together around shared ideas to build vibrant communities.

Her commitment and zeal for enacting change has earned her several distinctions, including McGill's prestigious Scarlet Key Award and Princeton's esteemed Donald E. Stokes Award for leadership and academic excellence. Between co-founding two Non-Governmental Organizations and working for the United Nations, Tanya finds the time to kick-start new initiatives such as the Community Action -- a community-led group that organizes charity fundraisers for legal aid and student to work not just in the community, but with the community. One recent project called Community Captured, was a photo display that addressed the complex dimensions of pressing social issues, while inviting community members and organizations alike to participate in the process of creating change.

And what's the common denominator that underlies all of her achievements? Tanya firmly believes that efforts taken to bring about change, even at a very local level, can be as transformative as the largest of international development projects.

Start small, but start now -- that is what will make the greatest difference tomorrow.
