I Can't Taste Anything

Adrian Wellock lost his sense of taste. After suffering a cold, he started getting a metallic taste in his mouth, which took his palate with it. These days, he only eats foods that are simple to chew and adds spice and herbs to ratchet up the smell. Find out what it's like when everything, actually tastes like nothing.

I Cant Taste Anything | Appreciate your sensing ability

It happened one spring day. My older sister and I were cycling in a park not far from our house. In general, I can ride a bike very well and, apart from that, I have quite significant experience in this, I have been cycling since I was 6 years old, but something went wrong that day.
I wanted to show my sister how skillfully I could get from the curb to the road on a bicycle, but, because of the wet road, the wheels began to slip and my bike fell down, together with me. I could not manage to control the movement of the bike, so I collapsed to the ground and hit my head on the curb really hard. My sister, Melody, immediately rushed to me, but I lost my consciousness.
I came to senses a few days later in the hospital. My head was bandaged, and there were a plenty of sensors and doctors around. My mom was also present there, and when I opened my eyes, she could not hold back her tears.
It turned out that I had quite a serious head injury, which really scared all my loved ones. That day, it seemed that the worst was over because I finally woke up, but in fact, my biggest ordeal was ahead.
My mom, being happy that I was recovering, wanted to feed me with some tasty home-made food. As soon as doctors gave the green light to her to do it, mom rushed home to bake my favorite strawberry tart.
And finally, the long-awaited piece of tart was in my hand, I was eagerly taking a bite of it, but suddenly, I faced a terrible disappointment - I couldn’t taste anything at all.
Then everything was like in a movie. My mother was sobbing a lot, doctors were fruitlessly examining me and trying to find the reason for this, and I was crying into my pillow every night so that no one could see it.
It turned out that when I fell down and received a head injury, some neural connections in the brain were damaged and I lost the sense of taste. Doctors were shrugging and saying that it would take some time and more thorough examination was required. Although, since then, a little more than a year has passed, and I still can’t taste anything.
It makes my life unbearable and gloomy, I do not enjoy the food I eat at all. As a result, I have poor appetite. I lost weight and started having problems with immune system due to the lack of vitamins. Doctors prescribed me a bunch of dietary supplements, which I always had to carry with me and take some of them on an empty stomach and others after meals.
My classmates began to make fun of me because in the school cafeteria, I was always with a pile of bottles, but then they found out that I couldn’t taste anything and began to make experiments on me, adding a heap of salt or chili pepper to my food. My life began to seem dark and gloomy to me, I became more withdrawn and did not want to talk to anyone.
There were days when I did not want to go to school at all and I came up with various pretexts to stay at home. My performance worsened, although before, I had always got good grades. In short, it seemed to me that the whole world was falling apart around me and this was all because I had lost the sense of taste.
At such moments, only reading could save me. I prepared a large cup of hot tea for myself, sat down by the window with a pile of books, and plunged into the unreal fantasy world to escape from the earthly problems. Yes, I did not sense the taste of tea, but it made me feel warm.
Once, quite an ordinary morning began as always, with the bullying of classmates, but suddenly, there happened something that deeply struck me. One of my abusers, his name was Michael, suddenly began to intercede for me. Before that, Michael was absent from school for several days.
Why is he protecting me? What happened? Earlier, he used to mock me, just like everyone else did. These questions were spinning in my mind, like flies, but I could not find an answer to them. It even seemed to me that he had some tricky plan to lull my vigilance, and then hurt me again, three times harder.
A week has passed since that day and no one from my classmates has been bullying me any longer. I was so much used to being an outcast and a loser in our class, that at first, it felt totally weird that no one offended me.
Later Michael came up to me and asked to go to the end of the corridor, behind the stairs, where it was possible to talk face-to-face and where no one could hear us. “Well, finally,” I thought and followed him.
Michael said that he had been absent because he had a sore throat so he needed to take sick leave. When he was ill, he has not been able to taste anything for several days and at this time, he understood how horrible my condition was.

How to restore lost sense of taste? - Dr. Jayaprakash Ittigi

Restoring the loss of taste sensation by using garlic, ginger, lemon, cinnamon, apple cider vinegar and by using oil pulling and by using castor oil. Castor oil has got a very good anti oxidant, anti microbial and anti inflammatory agent. By putting two drops of castor oil into the nostrils before going to the bed may increase the olfactory functions. Patients may sense the taste as well as the smell of the better taste sensation. Also by quitting alcoholism, tobacco chewing, by treating the deficiencies and restoring gum deficiencies like periodontal diseases, by restoring the cavities and also treating poor oral hygiene conditions by doing the scaling we can restore the taste sensation, by using zinc supplements and zinc rich foods like nuts and beans. The patient can use plenty of amount of water and also doing salt water gargling and visiting the dentist regularly for proper oral hygiene status. If there are any fungal infections we can use the anti fungal agents in order to clear the fungal diseases over the surface of the tongue and palate. By using these kind of methods we can definitely restore the loss of taste sensation.

Losing My Ability To Taste Anything and Getting It Back

Losing My Ability To Taste Anything and Getting It Back. When I couldn't taste food. Taste loss story.

Coronavirus: why might we lose our sense of smell and taste?

In this video, we speak to Peter Brennan, Reader in Physiology from the University of Bristol who tells us about two possible reasons why losing our sense of smell and taste might be a symptom of COVID-19.

To contact The Physiological Society:

Recently, there have been reports of patients with COVID-19 losing their sense of taste and smell. So, what could be causing this?
Well, we don’t know exactly, but one of our Members, Peter Brennan, Reader in Physiology from the University of Bristol, tells us that there are two possible explanations:

Let’s say you have something nice cooking in the oven. As it’s baking, it releases particles that waft into your nasal cavity and attach to olfactory sensory neurons - the cells that detect what we smell and then signal this information to the brain.

COVID-19 could be killing off these olfactory sensory neurons, keeping the signal of what you’ve just smelled from getting to your brain.

Another possibility is that inflammation, part of the body’s response to fight off COVID-19, causes swelling in the nose that blocks off the airflow and prevent odour molecules from getting to the olfactory sensory neurons.

When we talk about how this relates to lack of taste, what we are really referring to is lack of flavour. Our taste buds are still sensing sweetness or saltiness but we process the complex flavours of food by combining these tastes with what we smell. This is why when we have a blocked nose and can’t smell our food, it often tastes bland!

Man Can’t Taste or Smell 3 Months After Getting COVID-19

As thousands of patients recover from COVID-19, for some, one medical issue is still lingering. Matt Newey was Utah’s 78th recorded case of COVID-19. He was diagnosed in March, but after all this time, he still can’t taste or smell anything. To him, everything tastes like cardboard! Newey’s doctors told him there may have been some brain inflammation that may have put pressure on the part of the brain that processes smell and taste. As a result of his lost appetite, Matt has lost 20 pounds.

The ability to taste wonderful flavors is one of life’s great pleasures. Sometimes, because of illness or advancing age, you can lose your sense of taste. This makes it harder to enjoy meals. Dont worry, though, because in many situations the loss of taste is temporary and reversible. With a few simple remedies you’ll be savoring your meals again in no time!
Using Home Remedies Give yourself a castor oil massage to relieve sinusitis.
To help alleviate sinusitis, and restore your sense of smell and taste, rub about 1⁄2 teaspoon 2.5 mL of castor oil mixed with a drop of essential oil like eucalyptus onto your face, using moderate pressure. Start between your eyes, and massage out across your eyebrows toward your ears, then down either side of your nose. Castor oil applied topically can increase blood flow and help drain the sinuses. Your sense of taste and smell are intimately linked, and loss of one can affect the other. Thats why you tend to lose your sense of taste when you have a cold, flu, or congestion caused by allergies.Drink hot tea when youre sick.
Boil water in a pot or kettle and pour it into a teapot. Add tea leaves or tea bags of the herbal tea of your choice and let it steep for the correct amount of time depending on the kind of tea youre using, usually between 3 and 5 minutes. Drink the tea while its still hot. You can drink as much herbal tea in a day as you want, but aim for at least one cup a day when youre battling illness.Consuming hot herbal teas when you have a cold helps to thin out the mucus in your nostrils. This restores your senses of smell and taste. The hot flavorful drinks can also stimulate your taste buds. There are many kinds of herbal tea you can try. Chamomile is anti-inflammatory and peppermint is anti-microbial and good for your digestive tract. Both are excellent for helping to fight off illness and ameliorate cold symptoms. Mix garlic with water to fight off a cold.

Why can't we Smell or Taste with a Cold? | #aumsum #kids #science #education #children

Our nose has specialized olfactory receptors covered in a thin layer of mucus. In normal conditions, the odorants released from food or perfume diffuse through the mucus and get transported to the receptors, activating them, and thus allowing us to smell. However, when we have a cold, our nose produces excess mucus. Hence, the odorants are unable to reach the receptors, thus making it difficult to smell.

But, why can’t we even taste?

When we chew food, specialized gustatory receptors on our tongue tell us whether the food is sweet or salty. However, at the same time, odorants from food travel from back of our mouth to the olfactory receptors. The combination of information from gustatory and olfactory receptors give us the sense of overall flavor. However, when we have a cold, as the olfactory receptors cannot detect the odors, we don’t get a complete sense of taste and flavor.

I HAVE CORONAVIRUS. what it's like + my weird symptom

Update (April 2020)

With all this fear and stress over the coronavirus / COVID-19 pandemic, I thought I'd share my experience with having the virus to hopefully lower your anxiety over it somewhat. Me and my whole family are currently sick with coronavirus, so I go through how we became sick, the symptoms we're experiencing, and how we're treating them and dealing with it all.

Aside from listening to and following all the guidelines being put out on hand washing, social distancing, and quarantining, my biggest tip right now would be to prioritize your mental health and limit your intake of the news on the pandemic. Get the information you need and then just shut it off.

Stay safe & stay healthy, guys!
