Tim Urban | Inside the mind of a master procrastinator (Short Version)

This edited short video looks at Tim Urban's TED talk about procrastination.

His key message is that we all procrastinate to some extent but are usually saved by that feeling of panic that sets in when a deadline gets near. However, when looking at goals that have no deadline, we can end up procrastinating almost indefinitely. It's important that we look at our lives, think about what we want to accomplish within our lifetime and assign deadlines to ourself.

Make sure to check out the full 14 minute talk here

The Power of Procrastination (And How to Conquer it) | Tim Urban | RSAC 2018

As a self-proclaimed ‘master procrastinator’, Tim Urban has zeroed in on what it means to be a procrastinator and why we choose to avoid tasks until the ‘panic monster’ drives us to productivity. While this humanistic tendency can be detrimental toward our careers, Urban shows that by changing our perspective on looming tasks, responsibilities and related deadlines, we can reduce the negative effects of procrastination and improve our ability to complete work even when not facing a deadline -- and ultimately have more impact.

An End to Procrastination | Archana Murthy | TEDxMarcusHighSchool

Humans are all united by a force greater than joy, sorrow, and love... procrastination. Contrary to the humorous picture our popular culture paints, avoidance of work is a serious issue. Surveys suggest that 85-95% of students encounter problems directly related to procrastination. As a teenager, all-too-familiar with this torrid cycle of stress, anxiety, and depression, Archana Murthy presents an insightful cure to one of society’s greatest ills. Through personal reflection, Archana suggests that the cure to procrastination is a springboard for a greater journey that is better navigated with others.

Archana Murthy is a student of Marcus High School but also of life. She learns Indian classical music and dance but loves any and all art. She believes that art, science, and spirituality are often interchangeable. This is her first TEDx talk.

Inside the mind of a master procrastinator | Tim Urban Ted Talk Review

Inside the mind of a master procrastinator | Tim Urban Ted Talk Review

In his Ted talk Video, Tim Urban describes a monkey and a rational decision maker as a metaphor for a person’s conscious and subconscious mind. His metaphor is great for describing how decisions get made by a procrastinator, and how that becomes a problem in their life (i.e. the constant stresses that arise by waiting until the last minute to complete tasks or make important decisions in life).
The monkey represents a part of the unconscious mind that is causing procrastination by trying to avoid doing some task. If we dig far enough into the mind, we will find that this avoidance is always due to fear of something. and that is why procrastination is not a logical thing. It is a-logical, that is, without logic… because it is rooted in emotions, not rational thought.

Tim also describes a rational decision maker in the mind- this metaphor represents the logical, rational conscious mind, which uses step-by-step cause and effect thinking. This is how we operate consciously on a day to day basis.

Often we think that we have to have will power or ‘push through’ something or ‘beat’ procrastination in order to get rid of it. We think we have to have the rational decision maker over power or get rid of the monkey in the mind. Well this just isn’t true. The monkey is doing something positive and protective for you. The way to truly clear procrastination is to integrate the protective benefits that the monkey is achieving with actions governed by the rational decision maker. This way you will integrate both parts of the mind, without having to induce the stress of constantly having to ‘overcome’ some part of your humanity. The monkey and the rational decision maker really can work together beautifully.

How to Unlock The Power of Original Thinking | Tim Urban, Creator of Wait But Why

Tim Urban's blog, Wait But Why, has garnered millions of unique page views, thousands of patrons, and famous fans like Tesla CEO Elon Musk, TED Curator Chris Anderson, and Twitter co-founder Evan Williams. Combining long-form prose with wry stick-figure illustrations, Wait But Why covers everything from procrastination and artificial intelligence to happiness and why we haven’t yet encountered aliens. In 2015, Elon Musk asked Tim if he would be willing to write about his companies and their surrounding industries, leading to a four-part series of posts in which the two discussed the importance of sustainable transport, solar energy, and the future of space exploration. Vox called the series “the meatiest, most fascinating, most satisfying posts in ages.”

Tim examined exactly what makes Elon Musk so successful in such a wide variety of industries, discovering that the main reason behind Musk's success is that he is an original thinker. Throughout this in-depth discussion, Tim shed light on how we can all fully tap into the power of originality, revealing how the ability to think creatively leads to success in every field.
