Flying During COVID-19: What's Changed? (And What Hasn't?)

COVID-19 has changed travel. And that means your next flight may look and feel much different than just a few years ago. That's why we captured the entire experience of flying during COVID-19, from checking in all the way to grabbing your bag after landing.

And there are far more changes in store than simply wearing a mask...

The pandemic has reshaped the flying experience, with changes to how airlines board planes, scaled-back in-flight service, and even when you go through airport security. Some airlines blocked middle seats to give travelers more space onboard.

But after more than a year, millions of Americans are flying every week as travel rebounds. Now, many aspects of flying have returned to normal - or something close to it.

Tips for your first flight during (or after) coronavirus:

COVID-19 Test for Travel: Getting back to the USA

DISCLAIMER: Max and I are not medical professionals and cannot provide any medical advice of any kind. This video showcases our own personal experience getting a COVID-19 test and it is important to remember to follow all CDC guidelines and guidelines of the destination you are traveling to.

The new regulations for entering the United States is definitely a stressful experience, particularly when you are already abroad and have to go find a COVID-19 testing center. Believe it or not, this was our FIRST COVID-19 test experience that we have had since the start of the pandemic and we were nervous, to say the least!

The new requirements are as follows: travelers must present a negative PCR or viral Antigen test OR prove recovery from COVID-19 via a positive antibody test + a doctor's note certifying that the traveler is fit to travel.

Since it has been very difficult to obtain a PCR test in general, but even more difficult to get a PCR within 72 hours of a flight, we decided to get an Antigen test. By contacting various clinics and reaching out to Facebook groups for our area, I was able to find a clinic that offered a same-day Antigen test.

We decided to get the test as close to the 72 hour mark as possible since we were not sure how overwhelmed the labs would be with the new announcement, so off we went on the 27th to get our COVID test. We had heard rumors that all of the clinics were completely overwhelmed so we were ready for chaos. All in all, it went smoothly!

As promised, here are some of the resources we recommend reviewing as you start to plan your own journey:

Mandatory vaccinations: Human rights vs. public health? | COVID-19 Special

COVID-19 has divided the world. Most recently, between the vaccinated and un-vaccinated.

Many American companies, from Google to CNN and United Airlines have made the vaccine compulsory for staff. The alternative - look for a new job.
In Germany, free corona-virus tests are coming to an end. Unvaccinated Germans will have to foot the bill, if they want to eat out or go shopping.

In France, a quarter-million people protested against tightening rules against the unvaccinated. They say liberty is at stake. It's their body their choice. The French government is trying to speed up its vaccination drive, by making life for the non-vaccinated more complicated. Access to trains, domestic flights and restaurants and bars will only be allowed for the fully vaccinated, recently recovered or negatively tested.

Dying in the Name of Vaccine Freedom | NYT Opinion

In the video above, Alexander Stockton, a producer on the Opinion Video team, explores two of the main reasons the number of Covid cases is soaring once again in the United States: vaccine hesitancy and refusal.

“It’s hard to watch the pandemic drag on as Americans refuse the vaccine in the name of freedom,” he says.

Seeking understanding, Mr. Stockton travels to Mountain Home, Ark., in the Ozarks, a region with galloping contagion and — not unrelated — abysmal vaccination rates.

He finds that a range of feelings and beliefs underpins the low rates — including fear, skepticism and a libertarian strain of defiance.

This doubt even extends to the staff at a regional hospital, where about half of the medical personnel are not vaccinated — even while the intensive care unit is crowded with unvaccinated Covid patients fighting for their lives.

Mountain Home — like the United States as a whole — is caught in a tug of war between private liberty and public health. But Mr. Stockton suggests that unless government upholds its duty to protect Americans, keeping the common good in mind, this may be a battle with no end.

International Airlines look to Bahamas Post Covid-19

Mental Health and the COVID-19 pandemic in the Bahamas

Our Mental Health and Psychosocial Services Coordinator and clinical psychologist Dr. Andria Spyridou talks about mental health issues related to the coronavirus pandemic in the Bahamas, which was recently devastated by Hurricane Dorian.

In response to the catastrophic damage that Dorian left in its wake in the Bahamas, International Medical Corps deployed an emergency response team consisting of doctors, nurses, logisticians, mental health and psychosocial support services (MHPSS) specialists, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) specialists. The Bahamian government asked us to help lead assessment efforts and provide medical care throughout Grand Bahama island, particularly in eastern areas, which were the most affected by the storm and where the health system was decimated. Our team was the first to reach the most devastated communities, including High Rock, McLean’s Town and Pelican Point.

Today, International Medical Corps is continuing to work with the Bahamian government to provide basic medical services and supplies to those affected by the hurricane, as well as WASH and MHPSS services, through our “Hospitainer” primary healthcare mobile unit in East Grand Bahama.

Norwegian Cruise Line's New Health and Safety Protocols have been announced, giving some insight into what cruising will really look like when it resumes. In this latest video, we detail all of the new announcements regarding Norwegian Cruise Line's Sail Safe program.

If you enjoy the video, please make sure to give it a BIG THUMBS UP!

Norwegian Cruise Line recently updated its Peace of Mind policy to include all cruises through November 30, 2020, allowing individuals to cancel up to 48 hours before a sailing and still receive a future cruise credit.

Also, the cruise line indicated that it will be limiting the passenger capacity onboard each ship; however, it did not give any specific guidelines about how much this capacity would be reduced.

For embarkation, guests will be required to do an online check-in and will be assigned a specific boarding time to reduce crowds. At the terminal, guests will be required to complete a temperature check and heath declaration.

Further, Norwegian Cruise Line will also have strict sanitation protocols with frequent sanitation of high traffic areas and staterooms using Electrostatic Spray Technology and fogging.

Cruise ships will also practice responsible social distancing in venues such as restaurants, theaters, and other public spaces. However, the cruise line still has not commented on whether or not passengers will need to wear masks. While the Sail Safe protocols do include additional safety precautions for crew, it also does not indicate what type of PPE crew members will need to wear once cruising resumes.

Other improvements include brand new medical grade air ventilation filters to remove pathogens from the air, improved medical testing on the ship, and the creation of a brand new officer in charge of ensuring all new health protocols are properly executed on each ship.

Read all of the details about Norwegian Cruise Line's Health Protocols on the blog:
