JON PONDER PARDONED: Surprise by President Trump during RNC night two

President Trump on Tuesday announced a pardon of Jon Ponder ahead of the convicted bank robber-turned activist's appearance at the Republican National Convention.

Ponder, who founded the nonprofit Hope For Prisoners, will be speaking at the convention, along with Richard Beasley, the FBI agent who arrested him, Fox News is told.

Ahead of the Tuesday appearance, the president announced the pardon in a video, calling Ponder's story a beautiful testament to the power of redemption.

He has created one of the most succesful reentry programs, Hope For Prisoners, in Las Vegas, Trump said in a video taped at the White House. Hope for prisoners is a movement that began as a dream, in a tiny prison cell, and is now making a difference in the lives of thousands, truly bringing hope that there is an opportunity and a community that is waiting and willing to offer them a second chance.

The president in 2018 honored both Ponder and Beasley during a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden during the National Day of Prayer.

WATCH: Trump pardons former felon, Jon Ponder | 2020 RNC Night 2

President Donald Trump pardoned Jon Ponder, a former felon who started the non-profit re-entry program Hope for Prisoners while serving time for a number of bank robberies. He delivered the pardon in a video shown on Aug. 25-- the second night of the Republican National Conviction. Trump called Ponder’s story a “beautiful testament to redemption.” Ponder appeared with the FBI agent who arrested him, Rich Beasley, and said he hoped formerly incarcerated people would be given the opportunity to “take advantage of the fact that we live in a nation of second chances.” Beasley said he appreciated the president’s “support for law enforcement,” adding that “he knows the overwhelming percentage of law enforcement officers are good, smart people who are doing their jobs well.” The coronavirus pandemic upended both parties’ traditional conventions. Instead of in-person events, the program each night features a number of speakers and musical performances virtually across the country.

President Donald Trump pardons convicted bank robber Jon Ponder

President Donald Trump pardons felon Jon Ponder, who, after he was released from prison, formed an organization to help recently-released prisoners re-enter society. With Richard Beasley, the former FBI agent who arrested him.

Trump pardoned Jon Ponder, an ex-convict and current founder of Hope for Prisoners, a nonprofit that works to help transition prisoners back into society upon their release.

Touting the pardon during the Republican convention raised questions about the politicization of the president’s clemency powers.

Trump has previously hosted Ponder at the White House, and earlier this year hinted that he was considering clemency. “We are giving him absolute consideration, and I have a feeling he’s going to get that full pardon,” Trump said of Ponder in February.

Ponder had reportedly been arrested as a teenager for armed robbery and had later been incarcerated for other crimes including assault.

Trump pardons bank robber during Republican National Convention

Convicted bank robber and founder and CEO of Hope for Prisoners Jon Ponder has been issued a full pardon by President Donald Trump during the second night of the Republican National Convention.

While all presidents give pardons, President Trump's decision to award one during his party's convention raised concerns he violated the Hatch Act, which prohibits the use of government titles and resources for political activities.

RNC 2020: President Trump Pardon Jon Ponder

President Trump pardon Jon Ponder

Trump's family takes stage in night 2 of RNC

Trump's family took the state in night two of the Republican National Convention, plus a pardon and a naturalization ceremony.

Republican convention uplifts Trump supporters

Uplifting speeches and actions during the 2020 Republican National Convention are striking cords with Trump supporters who feel the media is not accurately portraying the positive aspects of the political event.

Night two of the RNC featured numerous female speakers including first lady Melanie Trump, as well as first responders and average Americans who owned businesses.

Rich George, a Republican voter in the swing state of Michigan, enjoyed seeing a great cross-section of speakers who he believes shared motivational messages.

It was very hopeful. It was very optimistic, George said. I know I was really struck by the orchestrated calls of how dark the first day was, the first day of the convention. That everything was dark, it was dark, dark tones. And that just struck me as there is no way that you could call the second night of the convention dark at all.

George said he was surprised to see President Donald Trump sign a pardon for Jon Ponder, a convicted felon who now runs the social service organization Hope for Prisoners.

I didn't expect that. I just thought we were hearing this story of redemption, George said. We all need to hear stories of redemption. We all need that in our own life. It's something that really does affect so many of us.

During his second surprise appearance of the night, Trump helped conduct a naturalization ceremony for a diverse group of five new American citizens.

Republican voter Zach Lahring likened the moment to America representing a beacon of light to those seeking freedom and opportunity for a better life.

The idea that Trump is supporting women and minorities and immigration, legal immigration is a very powerful message, Lahring said.

Another speaker who resonated with Trump's political base was Kentucky teenager Nick Sandmann, who is known for video of his interaction with a Native American man during dueling demonstrations at the Lincoln Memorial in 2019.

Lahring respects Sandmann's courage to stand up to the media, and to express his first amendment rights by proudly wearing his red Make America Great Again hat both during the viral moment and again at the end of his convention speech.

I actually know a lot of people that own Trump hats but don't necessarily wear them unless it's a political event or where they might feel safe, Lahring said. When (Sandmann) got pushed, he pushed back a little bit. He kind of reminded me of Trump in that aspect. He went after some of the media that had come, came after him. It was an outstanding speech from a young man that I was very encouraged by him.

Both George and Lahring enjoyed other convention speakers who focused on popular conservative policies like Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood employee who made a convincing argument for becoming pro-life.
