Why You Think You're Ugly | Melissa Butler | TEDxDetroit

The Lip Bar challenges the standard of beauty through their products, pricing and ingredients. They focus on their beliefs that beauty isn’t linear, cosmetics shouldn’t be for the privileged, and makeup is a mere enhancement of who you are, not a completion of you! In 2012, Melissa launched The Lip Bar because she was incredibly frustrated with the beauty industry. Why were most cosmetics filled with unnecessary chemicals? Why did lipsticks only come in a limited range of colors? And more importantly, why was the depiction of beauty so damn linear?

Melissa started making lipstick in her kitchen because I believed beauty shouldn't compromise health and because she was determined to not change the way she looked to fit into some superficial or trendy beauty standard.

She's not passionate about makeup. She's passionate about creating an inclusive narrative on what beauty is and reminding women that they don't have to settle for anything.

Today, The Lip Bar products are found at retailers nationwide and Melissa's mission to challenge the current standard of beauty by creating a lipstick experience that is unsurpassed in craftsmanship, quality and color continues. EP-82 – பெண் பாவம் - Looks aren’t everything. Believe me, I’m a Model - Zero to Hero in 100 days

I am back.

We are in Episode 82.

Friend called from Delhi and suggested to take up a tamil book. Today I have taken up நீ நதி போல ஓடிக்கொண்டிரு by Bharathi Baskar. This is one of my favourites book. All words of wisdom from Bharathi Baskar are shared profoundly in this book.

Bharathi Baskar takes up 20 articles related to daily challenges to women. I recommend this book to be read by men as well. That helps to understand the daily challenges faced by women in our houses.

Today’s topic is அழகு... எது?

Six months ago, I went to my native place. I went to my native after 20 years. In those days, we never had any beauty parlour in my town twenty years ago. This time I have seen 4 to 5 parlours in every street and every corner of our town. That is why, this topic is closer to my heart.
In our movies, TV ads and media shows 3 types of women.

One is a family women talkes about health advices like Boost is the secret of energy.

Second type of ads objectivises women by exposing their body part in an obscene way (அங்கங்களின் அங்காடி).

3rd type of ads shows women are with fair skin or pimple. Body shaming issues are included here.

From childhood days, I am a big fan of Actress SriDevi. What have we done to SriDevi. We told her, Her nose was not perfect. We collapsed her confidence and make her feel insecure. I would says, “we as a people of society are the big culprit”. She is no more with us.

There is a big economics, commercial behind all women. Survey says 85% of retail industry sales are driven by women.

Articles to refer:

Women account for 85% of all consumer purchases: ... are most likely to engage with retailers using social media or other digital tools. ...

In Jeevan Vidya workshop says, all the cosmetic industries (கூட்டு களவாணிகள்) worked together and declared Miss Universe and Miss World from India so that they built the cosmetic industry.

We all need to think through this in a deep manner so that we can make wiser decisions.
Our proverb says, “ஆள் பாதி ஆடை பாதி”. Accordingly, if we do beauty accessories to feel good and confident which are well and good.

However, I see a lot of women are losing their confidence, getting depression and insecurity due to Body shaming issues that need to be addressed individually. Inside of focussing on our internal beauty, we are spending more time on external beauties. We are spending more time beautifying ourselves; spend more money and spending more time in thoughts as well. Added to that, we are losing our consciousness in this a lot which is very valuable and priceless to any human being. Instead of showing our beauty, we are slowly focussing to show ourselves in a glamorous way.

If we just spend our energies on external beauties/glamour alone, we lost famous personalities like SriDevi. Even Marilyn Monroe, Keeliyopatra did not live their lives in peace and even their death was very depressing as they fell behind the glamorous thing. Beauty is different and Glamour is totally different.

What I am trying to say is அகத்தில் அழகு முகத்தில் தெரியும் (The face is the index of the mind).

How to bring that Inner Beauty?

We all of us are SriDevi and Superstars on this earth.. Ovvaiyar says
அரிதரிது மானிடர் ஆதல் அரிது
மானிடர் ஆயினும் கூன்குருடு செவிடு
பேடு நீங்கிப் பிறத்தல் அரிது

To sculpt ourselves as SriDevi and Superstars, let us focus on the basis of beauty.
• Let us not run behind Chemicals
• Go for natural products as suggested by Actress Amla and Nadhiya
• Because too much of intoxication of chemicals, chemicals everywhere could be the reason for raising Breast cancer issues in women.

We need to delve deeper into these issues to take wise decisions.

To get a wider understanding of this issue, I did some more research on two popular forums like TED and YouTube.

I saw Vidya Balan’s Body shaming videos. Kabhi tu moti kehta hai, kabhi tu choti kehta hai... Vidya says in a video, with a certain confidence and weight in her voice. She highlights the discriminatory comments and jokes made at people regarding their looks.”. Don't make jokes on someone's size, color. Everyone is different...that's why everyone is special, Vidya said in the video, which is part of an initiative for her radio show Dhun Badal Ke Toh Dekho.

Conclusion:-
We should respect and identify people based on their skills and talents not based on their looks. That is the real secret for us as Heroes and Heroines.

I'm not your inspiration, thank you very much | Stella Young

Stella Young is a comedian and journalist who happens to go about her day in a wheelchair — a fact that doesn't, she'd like to make clear, automatically turn her into a noble inspiration to all humanity. In this very funny talk, Young breaks down society's habit of turning disabled people into inspiration porn.

'I'm No Angel: From Victoria's Secret Model to Role Model' by Kylie Bisutti

In December 2011, 21-year-old Victoria's Secret model Kylie Bisutti stunned the fashion industry when she chose faith over fame and fortune and made the switch from supermodel to role model.

In I'm No Angel, Kylie shares her story—from her early years struggling to make it big in the cut-throat world of modeling, her big break winning the Victoria's Secret Angel competition, and the disillusionment and spiritual warfare that followed, to the moment she realized that she could no longer reconcile her career with her Christian beliefs, surrendered her life to God, turned in her Angel wings, and dedicated her life to preaching a message of modesty and inner beauty.

Along the way, Kylie talks about her personal struggles with inadequacy, low self-esteem, and her near-constant quest for approval in a world where you can never be thin enough, pretty enough, or sexy enough. She helps readers understand that true beauty lies within and that real fulfillment comes from knowing, loving, and serving Christ.

An Art Made of Trust, Vulnerability and Connection | Marina Abramović | TED Talks

Marina Abramović's art pushes the boundary between audience and artist in pursuit of heightened consciousness and personal change. In her groundbreaking 2010 work, The Artist Is Present, she simply sat in a chair facing her audience, for eight hours a day ... with powerfully moving results. Her boldest work may still be yet to come — it's taking the form of a sprawling art institute devoted to experimentation and simple acts done with mindful attention. Nothing happens if you always do things the same way, she says. My method is to do things I'm afraid of, the things I don't know, to go to territory that nobody's ever been.

People react to being called beautiful

#breathebeauty

I conducted an independent project, which evidently turned into a social experiment halfway through, regarding beauty at my performing arts high school in Chicago. I want to clarify that my intentions were not to get a reaction out of people. I was simply filming beauty and this is the result. Here it is.

School: Chicago HS for the Arts
Class: Integrated arts :) THE BEST CLASS.

Why Looks Are NOT Everything

Folks, looks are not everything in life. Maybe you watched a ted talk saying appearances are important. Maybe you think how good looking you are determines everything. But it’s just not true. Looks are important, but looks are not everything.
