Overcoming Anxiety as a Christian | Christian Motivation - Troy Black

Have you ever found yourself worrying about something that never happened? Or have you ever been anxious about something that later felt trivial? Here's something I've learned about anxiety: it can come from simply having the wrong expectations. The good news is that we can lay our expectations down and take up God's expectations today. I can promise you that God is not anxious about the same things you're anxious about right now. In fact, He's not worried at all. When you draw near to Him and learn to look at life from His perspective, you can have real peace, even through the middle of a trial.

Faith vs Fear - What Does The Bible Say? - Fear Not God is With Us - Jesus Christ

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you - 1 Peter 5:7

Faith vs. Fear: What does the Bible say?

Hebrews 11:1 describes what faith is: Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things unseen. It's important to recognize what is meant by the word hope here. This isn't the Oh, I hope it doesn't rain today kind of hope. This is an unshakable hope— Biblical hope that cannot be separated from faith. A friend of mine once perfectly tied the two together with this question, Without hope, can there be faith?

Fear is the opposite of faith. It's the other side of the coin so to speak. Fear is lacking in faith. It is a denial of the hope that God will take care of us no matter what trials we come up against—especially those that draw out our deepest terrors. I don't think I need to go further into defining fear, do I? It's a state of being in which we lack belief, and we have all encountered it at some point in our lives. Let's move on to what the Bible has to say on both fear and faith.

Faith is a Gift from God.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and not of yourselves, it is a gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9) Faith is not something we can originate in ourselves. It is purely a gift from God. But faith should not remain stagnant; God wants us to grow in our faith. For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. (2 Timothy 1:7) By growing in our faith, fear will find it more difficult to get ahold of us. Sounds like a sweet deal, doesn't it?

How do I grow in my faith?

By studying God's word and talking to Him in prayer. Romans 10:17 says it pretty clearly: So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Our faith come from relying on God and His faithfulness. How can we know His will and Word without studying it? Set aside time to study His word and have some time in with Him in quiet prayer. Start doing it today! Don't wait until you're in the midst of a trial to grow in the Lord. Like the old cliché goes, there is no time like the present.

What do I do when I'm afraid?

Psalm 56:3 records the famous king David confessing to God, When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. David understood where to turn when he was afraid. Often, it is through those times of fear and trials that we grow the most in our faith. God uses adversity to develop a strong faith within us.

Can you think back to a time that seemed so dark you could not imagine any possible way out? Think about that event in your life, then look for ways that God sustained you. Remember that God does not always give us precisely what we're asking for, but He will do what is best for us.

Every time you are afraid or faced with adversity, use that time as an opportunity to grow in your faith. Keep in mind that even though it may not seem like it at the time, God will never send a difficulty your way that is too big for you to handle with His help. First Corinthians 10:13 says, No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

God is gracious and good. Understanding that and letting yourself rest in the hope of His goodness will help you through your weaknesses and through times of fear. Be anxious in nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

Go to God and talk to Him about your fears. He will be faithful to help you through them. His Word is filled with rich promises on which you may lay claim. Open your Bible, see what it has to say on the specific fear plaguing you, then ask God to help you.

God speaks to us in different ways at different times. Sometimes, it might be like a voice in your head (like a conscience) that tells you what you should be doing.
Sometimes, His voice comes as a revelation as you as reading the Word. For example, you might read a story about one of God's people and realize how it applies to your own life; that's God speaking to you!
Sometimes, His voice is more of an impression, like a tug at your heart or your mind, giving you a sense that this is right or wrong or that you should act in a certain way.
The important thing to remember is to keep reading God's Word so that you know what His character is like. Jesus said in John 10:27, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. When you hear a voice or get a revelation or a strong sense of direction, then you will recognize if it is God speaking to you or not.

Christ-Centered Healing from Anxiety

Carrie Wrigley, LCSW, a licensed therapist, shares some thoughts on how Christ can heal those who are struggling with anxiety.

TRANSCRIPT of Video:

I've also seen Christ-centered healing, that process applied very successfully to individuals who struggle with anxiety. There is perhaps nothing that dispels anxiety completely, or more powerfully, than knowing that the literal God of Heaven, the Creator of this earth, of this universe, is pulling for you, is on your team. That's a level of the dispelling of fear such as no earthly source can provide. You certainly see that in the writings of some of the New Testament writers—of Peter, of Paul, of some of the others who literally, on a daily basis had their lives in peril by the work that they were engaged in, of standing up for the Savior, in the times of the Roman Empire. So often, in the face of the most terrible danger, they would stand up with boldness and with strength, nothing could scare these guys. Because they knew who they were working for and they knew who was working for them and it dispelled all fear. That same kind of power is available to us.

Lyrics:
Obsessive thoughts conspire, their secrets echo through my mind
Compulsive actions so dire, they're forever in disguise
This darkness surrounds me, with my back against the wall
This cycle keeps going, on and on and on

So let me feel alive again
Set me free before the end

Intrusive thoughts won’t quiet, their voices louder with each cry
There's nothing wrong, i'm just tired and other cliche’d lies
This darkness surrounds me, with my back against the wall
An existence so lonely, days go on and on

So let me feel alive again
Set me free before the end
Let me breathe again
Break me out of my head
Save me from myself
So let me feel alive again (and again, and again, and again)

So set me free
Set me free (x3)
Let me be
I wanna feel alive before it all ends

Enough's enough
I wanna live my life on the outside
Trapped in my mind
Somebody save me
These thoughts won't stop
They tear me up from the inside
Enough's enough

So let me feel alive again
Set me free before it ends
(feel, feel, feel it again, feel, feel, feel it again, feel, feel, feel it again, set me free before it all ends)

So let me feel alive again (and again, and again, and again)
Set me me free before the end (set me free, set me free, set me free)
Let me breathe again
Break me out of my head
Save me from myself
So let me feel alive again (and again, and again, and again)

So let me feel alive

Song Background Information:

The song is about mental illness, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder more specifically, but it can also apply to other mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, mainly due to the overlapping nature of the symptoms that affect people with these conditions. It’s about feeling like a prisoner of your own mind, especially when the condition you’re dealing with starts affecting your every day life, getting in the way of your studies, career, relationships and friendships. Especially with OCD, you sort of get trapped in an endless, vicious cycle of intrusive, bad thoughts, which end up dictating how you live your life. You realize how irrational some of your behaviours and thoughts are, but you can’t help but let it consume you, making your entire existence revolve around it.

Video Background:

The whole video is meant to personify the relationship between a person with mental illness and their disease. Some days it follows you around everywhere and you try to ignore it. Some days it keeps getting in the way and you can't ignore. Some days you're forced to fight it aggressively. But at the end of the day, if you're affected with mental illness, chances are it's going to be around you for the rest of your life, and the only thing you can really do is accept it and try to coexist with it.

LYRICS
⁃ What do you do
When you've done all you can and it seems like its never enough
And what do you say when your friends turn away and you're all alone
Tell me what do you give
When you've given your all and it seems like you can't make it through
Well you just stand when there's nothing left to do
You just stand watch the LORD see you through
Yes after you've done all you can, you just stand
Tell me how do you handle the guilt of your past
Tell me how do you deal with the strain
And how can you smile when your heart has been broken and filled with pain
Tell me what do you give
When you've given your all and it seems like you can't make it through
Child, you just stand, when there's nothing left to do
You just stand watch the Lord see you through
Yes after you've done all you can, you just stand, stand and be sure
Be not entangled in that bondage, oh you just stand and endure
God has a purpose, yes God has a plan
Tell me what do you do
When you've done all you can and seems like you can't make it through
Child, you just stand, stand, you just stand, stand, stand, stand
Through the storm, stand, stand through the rain
Stand, through the hurt, stand, yeah through the pain, you just
Don't you stop, stand, and don't you bend, stand, don't give up
Stand, no don't give in, you just
Hold on, stand, just be strong, stand
God will step in, stand, and it won't be long, you just
After you've done all you can
After you've gone through the hurt
After you've done all you can, after you've gone through the pain
After you've done all you can, after you've gone through the storm
After you've done all you can, after you've gone through the rain
After you've done all you can, prayed and cried, after you've done all you can
Prayed and cried, after you've done all you can, prayed and cried
After you've done all can, prayed and cried, after you've done all you can
After you've done all you can, you just stand, oh, oh, oh, oh
