5th Borneo Bird Festival 2013

Borneo Bird Festival is a celebration of the magnificent birds of Borneo, With the theme
birding in the Heart of Borneo, the 3-day event encompassed a diversity of birding activities that strengthened the progressive attitudes towards its conservation and to recognize its economic value in the eco-tourism industry.

The Borneo Bird Festival will be held at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), Sepilok
Sandakan, Sabah. The RDC is a centre for environmental education situated within the famous Sepilok Forest Reserve.
For the birding hobbyists, join the bird photography race, bird photgraphy contest, bird sound mimic contest, scheduled guided birding walks, see the many interesting Talks from invited experts, visit the informative exhibition and the many kids activities

In apprecitation of Nature's beauty, its significance to human relations and benefits, Sabah is now looking forward to the promising event well known as Borneo Bird Festival (BBF).

Borneo Bird Festival is a celebration of the magnificent birds of Borneo, it is aimed to create public awareness to bird conservation, to promote birdwatching, and enhance the eco-tourism activities.

For the first time in 4 years, the merriment will be housed at the Malaysia's First UNESCO World Heritage site and Borneo's premier birding destination, the Kinabalu National Park on 5th-7th October 2012.

In Borneo, a total of 624 resident and migratory species of bird, with 54 species are endemic.

With the theme Winged Wonders of Kinabalu, the activities from talks, demos, exhibitions, competitions, tour packages to children's camp, body paint and tattoos to the misty and cool guided Bird Watching walk will mostly be featuring the magnificent birds of Kinabalu Parks specially noted for its:
33 endemic montane birds
16 are found in the highlands of Kinabalu Park, such as Whitehead's Trogon, Black-breasted Fruit-hunter, Sunda Laughing-thrush, Mountain black-eye, Whitehead's broadbill, Whitehead's Spiderhunter, Black-sided flowerpecker and more.

In apprecitation of Nature's beauty, its significance to human relations and benefits, Sabah is now looking forward to the promising event well known as Borneo Bird Festival (BBF).

Borneo Bird Festival is a celebration of the magnificent birds of Borneo, it is aimed to create public awareness to bird conservation, to promote birdwatching, and enhance the eco-tourism activities.

In Borneo, a total of 688 resident and migratory species of bird, with 59 species are endemic.

The Sabah, Malaysian Borneo State, held its 7th Borneo Bird Festival on the highlands of Sabah in the Kinabalu National Park, Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 2000 for its outstanding biological attributes. It is home to 54 montane birds of Borneo, such as Bornean Treepie, Bornean Green Magpie, Whitehead’s Trogon, Whitehead’s Broadbill, Kinabalu Friendly Warbler and more.
The event is jointly organised by Sabah Tourism Board, Sabah Parks and Borneo Bird Club who line up activities such as Workshops and Talks, exhibition booths showcasing birds of Borneo, birding equipment, birding tours in Sabah and exhibits by NGOs.
A fun-filled and exciting with activities such as Bird Race, Photography competitions, daily Guided Birding Walk and many more. With the theme “people and birds of Mount Kinabalu” this will be an opportune time for birders, photographers, tour operators, traders, managers and conservationists to meet, exchange ideas, and to introduce products and services to a target market.

BORNEO BIRD RACE 2014

The Sandakan Borneo Bird Club is proud to announce that the BORNEO BIRD RACE 2014 is to be held from 24 Sep to 3 Oct in collaboration with Brunei Tourism, Sarawak Tourism Board, Sabah Tourism Board and Swarovski Optik.

This event is specially organised for Birders and Bird Photographers primarily to promote Borneo Island as one of the premier birding and nature tourism destinations in Asia.

Objectives of the Borneo Bird Race:
1. To promote Borneo as one of the premier bird watching destinations of the world;
2. To Network with birdwatching fraternities around Asia region and the world
3. To encourage travels within Asia.
4. To Create awareness and conservation of the bird species unique to Borneo to the local community and to the global birding fraternities.
5. Foster closer integration and harmony through nature festival of the neighboring States of Borneo, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan, Indonesia;
6. Develop and improvement of infrastructure to wildlife watching tourism;
7. To enhance and complement the “Heart of Borneo” initiative – Tourism Program.
8. To increase arrival of eco-tourists and birdwatchers to Borneo.
9. Further development of naturalist guide and birdwatching guide.
10. Support good policies to improve nature tourism.

A Registered Club with Registrars of Societies (ROS), it aims to create the culture of appreciation of Birds of Borneo; to develop initiatives supporting the bird species conservation and encourage birdwatching travel.

Brunei Tourism

Brunei Tourism is in charge of tourism development, marketing and promotion, as well as licensing of tour companies. The division has been actively engaged in the promotion of tourism to Brunei since the mid 1990s, standing in its four pillars: culture, heritage, nature, and contemporary Asia.

Sabah Tourism Board

Its principal objective is to increase visitor arrivals to Sabah and to attract the critical mass of visitors from key markets.

Sarawak Tourism Board

Making Sarawak the naturally preferred tourism destination.

The Race – an overview
First launched in 2013, the first Borneo Bird Race saw 10 countries travel more than 1000 kilometres in search of more than 400 species of birds in a wide range of habitats from the coastal regions, freshwater swamps, lowland forests, to the hills and mountain ranges of Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei. At the end of the day, each team will enjoy the beauty of this land as they count the numbers of recorded species, and the longest list shall earn the prestigious “Bornean Bristlehead Cup”.
The Race will cover Ulu Temburong National Park in Brunei, Borneo HIghlands Resort in Sarawak, and Kinabalu Park and Rainforest Discovery Centre, Sepilok, Sabah.
