The Turkey Hunter - Habitat Management for Wild Turkeys with Grant Woods

Habitat Management for Wild Turkeys with Grant Woods

This week I discuss habitat management for wild turkeys with Grant Woods with

Grant is a wildlife biologist who specializes in habitat management planning for landowners around the US. He also hosts a weekly show on his website where he shares some of the management techniques that he uses on his own property, called The Proving Grounds.

Grant's videos are very well produced and put together and chocked full of great information that any turkey hunter can use to improve his/her hunting land - whether that is public hunting land or private ground.

Grant and I discuss what a wild turkey might consider to be the perfect blend of forest land and fields. We also talk about how much of those fields we need to turn into nesting habitat and brood rearing habitat.

We talk a good bit about how prescribed fire can be used to improve our hunting property and how Grant uses it to manage his nesting and brood rearing areas as well.

Finally, we talk about the best forage crops we can plant for our wild turkeys and Grant shares with us his secret about planting amazing food plots without using any fertilizer.

Listen in this week and let Grant help you with habitat management for wild turkeys on your property

EP16: Wild Turkey Habitat Improvements That Won't Break the Bank

The wild turkey is an intriguing bird with a lot of quirks. Every spring, this majestic bird makes a fool out of countless hunters that chase after them. One thing that holds constant amongst the greatest turkey hunters, is that they have a lot of turkeys to hunt. This is where wild turkey habitat management comes in. There are a number of practices that every land manager, whether he owns or leases land, can employ to attract wild turkeys and hold them on their property. The good news is they don't have to break the bank. Today we're talking with Ryan Basinger, a wildlife biologist and the lease and acquisitions manager with the Westervelt Company. Westervelt owns and manages around 500,000 acres around the Southeast. Managing that much land means you learn a thing or two about wild turkey habitat. On today's show, you'll learn some interesting science about the wild turkey, like: How long do wild turkeys live? When do Turkeys lay eggs? Meaning, does a hen lay a new egg each day she is bred? Can you sex a wild turkey by it’s droppings? Along with the science, we'll cover some questions we see landowners and lessees asking all the time such as: What are the Wild Turkey Habitat Requirements? What do Wild Turkeys Eat? What makes up a wild turkey diet? Is there a wild turkey favorite food? What to plant for Wild Turkey Food Plots? What do you feel is more important? Managing native vegetation or planting wild turkey food plots? Ryan will explain what practices Westervelt employs that they feel makes the biggest difference. There are a lot of things a land manager can do. Practices like mowing, discing, and strip discing all have their place. When it comes to creating openings for wild turkeys, we'll cover thinning, timber stand improvements, and controlled burns. There's a lot to cover, speaking of cover... Cover is critical in wild turkey habitat. Ryan answers the questions: How does a turkey protect itself from predators? What makes good Wild Turkey nesting habitat? Where do Wild Turkeys nest? What Wild turkey habitat improvements and predator control practices does Westervelt use to help turkeys protect themselves from predators? Proper management of wild turkey habitat is a critical part of what makes the turkey hunting so good at Westervelt. Tune in to learn what the key strategies are that land managers need to focus on to best ensure success and how you can pay for it all! We get a lot of landowners that want to know, how much is my land worth? We’ve recorded a video series to explain exactly how we determine that... just head over to to get the series.

Thinning Hardwood Forests for Health and Productivity

Thinning practices to improve forest growth and tree vigor. Thinning is the process of selecting and removing some trees to improve the growth and vigor of the residual trees. The benefits of thinning are well documented, but selecting the correct trees can have a profound influence on the success of the thinning treatment. This presentation will review some of the scientific literature that describes how trees will respond to thinning, and what owners and managers might expect as a growth response. Different ways to select the location and arrange of trees will be reviewed. The potential risks of thinning will be discussed. The original webinar broadcast was March 20, 2013

Ontario Wild Turkey Course

This is the official Ontario Turkey Hunting Course DVD content. As of January 1, 2017 the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) posted a proposal on Ontario’s Environmental Registry that would alter the wild turkey hunting regulations. This would include the elimination of the separate wild turkey hunter education course. Instead, the course content will be incorporated into the Ontario Hunter Education Program that all new hunters must pass.
This video is provided for educational purposes only. Please check your local hunting regulations for updates and changes.
