Mars Science Laboratory | Curiosity Rover Animation

The Mars Science Laboratory, also known as Curiosity, launched by NASA on November 26, 2011 and landed on Aeolis Palus in Gale Crator on Mars on August 6, 2012. The Rover's objectives include searching for past or present life, studying the martian climate, studying the martian geology, and collecting data for a future manned mission to Mars.

Curiosity is five times larger than the Spirit or Opportunity Mars Exploration Rovers, and carries ten times the mass of scientific instruments. It attempted a more precise landing than the previous Rovers, within a landing ellipse of of 7-20km, in the Aeolis Palus region of Gale Crator. This location is near the mountain Aeolis Mons (Previously known as the Sharp Mountain). It is designed to explore for at least 687 Earth days (1 Martian Year) over a range of 5-20 km.

Previouse NASA Mars Rovers became active after successful entry and descent landing on the martian surface. Curiosity, on the other hand, was active when it touched down the mars surface, employing over the Rover's suspension system for the final set down.

After the Rover touched down, it waited 2 seconds to confirm that it was on solid ground then fired several pyrotechnic fasteners activating cable cutters on the bridke to free itself from the spacecraft descent stage. The descent stage. The descent stage then flew away to a crash landing, and the rover prepared itself to begin science portion of the mission.

How we landed on Mars with NASA Spirit

Spirit, MER-A (Mars Exploration Rover -- A), is a robotic rover on Mars, active from 2004 to 2010. It was one of two rovers of NASA's ongoing Mars Exploration Rover Mission. It landed successfully on Mars at 04:35 Ground UTC on January 4, 2004, three weeks before its twin, Opportunity (MER-B), landed on the other side of the planet. Its name was chosen through a NASA-sponsored student essay competition. The rover became stuck in late 2009, and its last communication with Earth was sent on March 22, 2010.

Mars Science Laboratory - Curiosity Launch [HD]

NASA's Curiosity rover has begun the journey to Mars after its Atlas V rocket launched successfully from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Nov. 26. Ten instruments aboard MSL will provide new data about whether the area within and around Mars' Gale Crater could ever have supported microbial life. The Mars Science Laboratory is expected to reach Mars next August.
