How To Study Smarter, Not Harder - From How We Learn by Benedict Carey

Benedict Carey shares how changing your environment can help you retain more information. From his new book, HOW WE LEARN.

In the tradition of The Power of Habit and Thinking, Fast and Slow comes a practical, playful, and endlessly fascinating guide to what we really know about learning and memory today—and how we can apply it to our own lives.

From an early age, it is drilled into our heads: Restlessness, distraction, and ignorance are the enemies of success. We’re told that learning is all self-discipline, that we must confine ourselves to designated study areas, turn off the music, and maintain a strict ritual if we want to ace that test, memorize that presentation, or nail that piano recital.

But what if almost everything we were told about learning is wrong? And what if there was a way to achieve more with less effort?

In How We Learn, award-winning science reporter Benedict Carey sifts through decades of education research and landmark studies to uncover the truth about how our brains absorb and retain information. What he discovers is that, from the moment we are born, we are all learning quickly, efficiently, and automatically; but in our zeal to systematize the process we have ignored valuable, naturally enjoyable learning tools like forgetting, sleeping, and daydreaming. Is a dedicated desk in a quiet room really the best way to study? Can altering your routine improve your recall? Are there times when distraction is good? Is repetition necessary? Carey’s search for answers to these questions yields a wealth of strategies that make learning more a part of our everyday lives—and less of a chore.

By road testing many of the counterintuitive techniques described in this book, Carey shows how we can flex the neural muscles that make deep learning possible. Along the way he reveals why teachers should give final exams on the first day of class, why it’s wise to interleave subjects and concepts when learning any new skill, and when it’s smarter to stay up late prepping for that presentation than to rise early for one last cram session. And if this requires some suspension of disbelief, that’s because the research defies what we’ve been told, throughout our lives, about how best to learn.

The brain is not like a muscle, at least not in any straightforward sense. It is something else altogether, sensitive to mood, to timing, to circadian rhythms, as well as to location and environment. It doesn’t take orders well, to put it mildly. If the brain is a learning machine, then it is an eccentric one. In How We Learn, Benedict Carey shows us how to exploit its quirks to our advantage.

Praise for How We Learn

“How We Learn makes for a welcome rejoinder to the faddish notion that learning is all about the hours put in. Learners, [Benedict] Carey reminds us, are not automatons.”—The New York Times Book Review

“The insights of How We Learn apply to far more than just academic situations. Anyone looking to learn a musical instrument would benefit from understanding what frequency and type of practice is most effective. Even readers with little practical use for Carey’s information will likely find much of it fascinating, such as how intuition can be a teachable skill, or that giving practice exams at the very beginning of a semester improves grades. How We Learn is a valuable, entertaining tool for educators, students and parents.”—Shelf Awareness

“This book is a revelation. I feel as if I’ve owned a brain for fifty-four years and only now discovered the operating manual.”—Mary Roach, bestselling author of Stiff and Gulp

How to STUDY MORE IN LESS TIME: 80/20 RULE (Pareto Principle)

How to study more in less time by using the 80-20 rule, also known as the Pareto Principle. These study tips will help you to know how study effectively for your exam, be more productive with your time and achieve more in school.

If you want to get the most out of your study sessions, then this video will show you how to study more in less time by using the 80-20 rule.

The 80/20 rule is also known as the Pareto Principle. The definition states that 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.
80% of what we achieve is a direct result of the 20% of the actions we take. There are a small number of certain activities you do every day which are creating most of your happiness (or unhappiness) and most of your results (whether they are good or bad). Here are some examples:

- 20% of what you spend your time on doing gives you 80% of your happiness.
- You wear 20% of your clothes 80% of the time.
- 20% of the people you know stands for 80% of how happy you are with your social life.

So how does this apply to your studies? 20% of the studying you are doing is leading to the majority of your results. When it comes to exams, because of the limited time they have to test your knowledge on a subject –you will be tested on the most important ideas of the course, which tends to be about 20% of the material they teach. The key is to focus 80% of your time studying the core content that is going to be on your exam. The hardest thing is eliminating things that are less important. So how do you figure out what 20% is the most important?

What changes could you make in your life today based on the 80/20 Principle? Let me know by leaving a comment below. Thank you for watching and I’ll talk to you next time!

Marty Lobdell - Study Less Study Smart: A 2 Minutes Summary Of Marty Lobdell's Lecture - Reality

Marty Lobdell study less, study smart...

When you're learning new material, it can be overwhelming when you think about how much time you need to truly understand it all. This studying technique can help you stay focused and take on more information with shorter study sessions.

so, how to study less, study smart to retain more in less time? just stay here.

technique 1. Study in chunked sessions: Your ability to retain information diminishes after about 25-30 minutes, so break it up into multiple, smaller sessions. Reward yourself with fun activities during your breaks.
technique 2. Have a dedicated study area: Don't study where you do anything else. Don't study in your bed, where you play games, even if it's your computer, or in front of the TV.
technique 3. Know the difference between recognition and recollection: Recognition requires a trigger for you to remember something and you may not get that on a test. Study actively with focus on recollection. Quiz yourself and don't just glance over highlighted notes.
technique 4. Take good notes: Find a note-taking method that works for you and expand on them after your class lecture to increase retention and understanding.
technique 5. Be ready to teach what you've learned: If you can teach it to someone else, you have a solid grasp on the material.
technique 6. Read textbooks effectively: Use the question, read, recite, review to actively retain information. Just reading it is not enough.
Lastly, technique 7. divide everything you learn into two categories: facts and concepts. Facts are things that can fall out of your brain and you may need to come up with a mnemonic device in order to study them. Concepts are the glue that hold entire big picture together, making them the most important part to study. Concepts are why you're studying something to begin with and, once you learn them, they stick with you.

so if we summarise this video to study less, study smart.

technique 1. Study in chunked sessions.

technique 2. Have a dedicated study area.

technique 3. Know the difference between recognition and recollection.

technique 4. Take good notes.

technique 5. Be ready to teach what you've learned.

technique 6. Read textbooks effectively.

and technique 7. divide everything you learn into two categories, fact and concepts.
