Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory Video Walkthrough

Introduction to Intel Optane Data Center Persistent Memory

In this video from the 2019 Stanford HPC Conference, Usha Upadhyayula & Tom Krueger from Intel present: Introduction to Intel Optane Data Center Persistent Memory.

For decades, developers had to balance data in memory for performance with data in storage for persistence. The emergence of data-intensive applications in various market segments is stretching the existing I/O models beyond limits.

Intel® Optane™ DC Persistent Memory introduces a new, flexible tier within the memory/storage hierarchy, applicable to workloads across cloud, HPC, in-memory computing, and storage. This disruptive technology will deliver persistence at memory bus speeds, reducing the need for persistence in storage which means fewer I/O trips, and lower latency, for accelerated performance. In addition, the new media will offer a lower-cost alternative compared to DRAM.

In this session you will learn about different modes supported by Intel® Optane™ DC Persistent Memory and open source libraries called PMDK (Persistent Memory Developer Kit) designed to solve challenges with persistent memory and simplify adoption of persistent memory programming. Usha Upadhyayula is a Developer Evangelist who will be providing this information in interactive format moderated by Tom Krueger, Global Sales Enablement Director both with Intel.

Intel Optane Persistent Memory on Lenovo Servers

Intel Optane DC persistent memory represents a new class of memory and storage technology explicitly architected for data center usage. Lenovo ThinkSystem servers with Intel Optane DC Persistent memory can help lower latency and improve overall performance by putting more data closer to the processor on nonvolatile media.
Intel's latest breakthrough reengineers the storage/memory hierarchy for even greater productivity. Intel® Optane™ DC persistent memory is now available in beta, and will be generally available in the first half of 2019. This technology is the next significant advancement for the Intel® Xeon® Scalable Platform and is planned to be included with future Intel Xeon Scalable processors in future Lenovo ThinkSystem servers.
Intel Optane DC persistent memory represents a new class of memory and storage technology explicitly architected for data center usage. It offers significantly lower latency than fetching data from system storage, and high capacities at an affordable cost.
Using Lenovo ThinkSystem servers running applications that are tuned for Intel Optane DC Persistent memory will result in lower data latency compared to solid-state drive technology. When data is stored closer to the processor on nonvolatile media, applications can see significant overall improvements in performance.

XPoint. Optane. QuantX. We've been hearing these terms thrown around for two years now. A form of 3D stackable phase change memory that promised 10x the density of DRAM and 1000x the speed and endurance of NAND. These were bold statements, and over the following months, we would see them misunderstood and misconstrued by many in the industry. These misconceptions were further amplified by some poor demo choices on the part of Intel (fortunately countered by some better choices made by Micron). Fortunately cooler heads prevailed as Jim Handy and other industry analysts helped explain that a 1000x improvement at the die level does not translate to the same improvement at the device level, especially when the first round of devices must comply with what will soon become a legacy method of connecting a persistent storage device to a PC.

Did I just suggest that PCIe 3.0 and the NVMe protocol - developed just for high-speed storage, is already legacy tech? Well, sorta.

That 'Future NVM' bar at the bottom of that chart there was a 2-year old prototype iteration of what is now Optane. Note that while NVMe was able to shrink down the yellow bar a bit, as you introduce faster and faster storage, the rest of the equation (meaning software, including the OS kernel) starts to have a larger and larger impact on limiting the ultimate speed of the device.

A Frankenstein SSD - Intel Optane Memory H10 EXPLAINED!
