10. Bruniquel Cave Chambe
Inside of the Bruniquel Cave, in the south-west of France, scientists have discovered a chamber with ring-shaped structures made of stalagmites, both broken and whole. A sort of a small-scale Stonehenge, but with stalagmites instead of big rocks.
At first, they carbon-dated the area to around 47,000 years ago, but they recently used a different kind of method. With uranium-thorium dating (sounds awesome, btw!), they managed to date the area to 176,000 years ago – three and a half times the original dating! Now, the only humans who lived there in those days were the Neanderthals, and scientists concluded that Neanderthals must have been the ones to make the stalagmite structures in the cave.
This is a very important discovery, because it helped scientists realize that Neanderthals were going deep down into the caves, as opposed to earlier findings. The chamber inside Bruniquel Cave gives us the opportunity to learn more about the lives of first humans, and broaden our view on our Neanderthal ancestors.
9. Noah’s Ark Mosaic
During excavations undertaken in an ancient synagogue in Israel Lower Galilee, scientists discovered a well-preserved mosaic depicting scenes from the Old Testament. Although the title, Noah’s Ark Mosaic, makes it sound like it comes straight from the Ark itself, it actually depicts the scenes connected to Noah’s journey and the Ark, hence – Noah’s Ark mosaic. This mosaic contains depictions of pairs of animals, including donkeys, bears and lions, and it was found in the ancient Jewish village of Huqoq.
This mosaic was found in the form of two panels, with one panel depicting a scene from Moses’ parting of the Red Sea, with soldiers who are being swallowed by gigantic fish. What’s really fascinating about this archeological discovery is that it’s pretty rare in its category. Experts in the field agree that there aren’t many mosaics dating from that period (5th century AD) which depict these kinds of scenes. In fact, there are only two known synagogues which contain such mosaics – one is present-day Syria (which depicts a different scene) and the other in Israel (which is pretty fragmented and not very well preserved). All of this makes the newly found mosaic a one-of-a-kind discovery! Who knows, maybe there will be more of them to come.
8. A “Russian doll” Pyramid
Russia and the pyramids? How does this make any sense? Well, it will soon! The Kukulkan pyramid, located in the state of Yucatan, in present-day Mexico, offers much more than the eye can tell. It is not only one pyramid, but – wait for it – three pyramids! One inside of another, inside of another, inside of another! This is why many refer to it as the “Russian doll” among fellow pyramids, as it resembles the one-inside-of-another concept of the famous Matryoshka dolls.
While researching, scientists used a very useful method called electrical resistivity, during which they passed electrical waves through the pyramidal structure and measures the degree of resistivity. The results were nothing short of amazing – it turned out that the Kukulkan pyramid (also known as El Castillo – the Castle) had two more pyramids inside of it!
The scientists found out that the two smaller pyramids were built much earlier, which means that the whole three-level structure wasn’t built at the same time, but over a course of several centuries. The smallest was built around 550AD, the middle one three centuries later, and the outermost one somewhere in the 12th or 13th century. It seems that the Maya people can still pull a surprise on us. Kudos!
7. Antikythera Man
One of the largest sea wrecks of the ancient world is probably the Antikythera shipwreck, which happened around 65BC. It was discovered in 1900, off the coast of the island of the same name. The find was truly a wonderful one, as there were many different items from the ancient times, including bronze statues, a lot of treasure, and probably the most important item of all – the Antikythera Mechanism, widely considered as the world’s first computer!
But recently, a big international team comprised of many scientists discovered something new in the

#6 Baffling Beetles
These insects seem to suffer from a case of identity crisis. They’re beetles that are native to Costa Rica and are very small at about 1.6 mm long. But they don’t look like beetles, nor do they live like them. This species lives within a colony of nomadic army ants and has kind of adopted their appearance. They’ve also adopted the ants as their means of personal transportation whenever the colony moves. The small, spindly beetles are known to latch onto the waist of worker ants, and let those insects carry them to their destination. Once it’s attached, the beetle mimics the appearance of the ant’s abdomen, making it look like the worker has two of those segments. Until they can get Uber, it looks like hitchhiking is the beetles best chance for a lift.

#5 Mariana Snailfish
These deep sea creatures belong to a family of fish that contains over 400 species. And geographically, they’re the world’s most widespread marine fish organisms. Members of this species measure about 29 centimeters long (11 inches) and appear like pale tadpoles. Although they weigh a scant 160 grams (0.35 pounds), they’re the top predators in their deep sea environment That includes various regions of the Mariana Trench, where depths can approach 8,500 meters (27,000 feet). Did you know that these snailfish inhabit the Challenger Deep? It’s located in the southern part of the Mariana Trench and contains the deepest point known in the planet’s seabed at nearly 11,000 meters (36,000 feet).

#4 Extremely Senior Citizens
Fossil specimens known as Dickinsonia (dik-in-so-nee-uh) were initially found in South Australia, and have since turned up in Ukraine and Russia among other locations. Specimens can range more than 4.5 feet long (1.4 m) and have a thickness of only a few millimeters. The fossils have engendered a lot of debate as to whether they were created by organisms like plants, fungi (fun-jie), or bacteria. Researchers have now concluded that the fossils belonged to animals, and not to something like an enormous amoeba. That’s because analysis revealed the presence of molecular fossils of cholesterol, which is only found in animals. Since they date back to the Ediacaran (ee-dee-AK-ur-uhn) period some 557 million years ago, Dickinsonia represents the world’s oldest known animal fossils! As for what type of animal created those fossils is still open to debate. Tell us what you think in the comments.

#3 Frogs with Fangs
Now there’s a phrase you don’t hear so often. But these amphibians endemic to Indonesia are indeed known to possess such choppers. The animals are around 1.5 inches long (37 mm) from snout to vent and are known for having well-developed tails and mouth parts at birth. As to the purpose of those fangs? Experts say that many amphibians have teeth, although they’re very different from ours. The fangs of these frogs aren’t really teeth, though. They’re bony protrusions that erupt through the gumline. The spike-like structures might be used for snatching prey from fast-moving water. But their exact function still remains a mystery. Have any ideas?

#2 Deepsea Lizardfish
This unusual beast was initially found in 2017 off the eastern coast of Australia and was then declared a distinct species about a year later. They have slender cylindrical bodies that can reach more than 70 cm long, and huge mouths filled with sharp, needle-like teeth used to capture and tear at prey. Researchers say they’re one of the world’s deepest dwelling apex predators. And they’re known to eat anything, including others of their kind. But they’re not worried about ravaging their population. These creatures are hermaphrodites that possess both male and female reproductive traits. Living some 3,500 meters (11.500 feet) below the surface, these lizardfish don’t get to hook up so often. As hermaphrodites, they can perpetuate the species regardless of which gender they encounter.

9. Fossil Rewrites China’s History
Fossil discoveries can teach us a lot about the animals that once roamed the earth, but sometimes a discovery can also make us rethink our complete understanding of the entire planet! In 2018, the remains of a dinosaur were found in northern China, and its presence there tells a new story about the continents. Perhaps the previous ideas of the separation of the planet’s continents were wrong.

8. Earth 2?
Over the past decade, new scientific instruments have allowed researchers to explore the universe like never before. One of the most interesting fields of study is the search for exoplanets, or planets outside of our solar system that orbits a star, much like Earth orbits the sun. Over the past few years, hundreds of these exoplanets have been found, especially with the help of TESS, NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite.
One of the most exciting discoveries was TOI 700 d.

7. Egyptian Treasure
Archaeologists recently announced the discovery of an important artifact in Egypt, and one that they hope may lead them to the location of a long lost burial chamber. Researchers from Poland were scouring through what appeared to be trash near the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, which is a structure at a complex of ancient tombs on the west bank of the Nile called Deir el-Bahari.

6. Skull Of An Ancient Ancestor
It has long been known that humans evolved from the same ancestors as other primates many millions of years ago, but the exact point at which we branched off in a different direction isn’t yet fully understood. Our own species, homo sapiens, are thought to have developed around 100 thousand years ago, but a recent discovery in Ethiopia is thought to be the remains of one of the earliest known direct human ancestors, who lived in the region around 3.8 million years ago.

5. Medieval Sword in Danish Sewer

It must have been some lead, because they actually found what they were looking for, influenza frozen in ice!!

8. The Sunken Palace of Cleopatra
Cleopatra is undoubtedly the most famous female ruler of ancient times. Even today, 2000 years after Cleopatra ruled as the last queen of Egypt, she is still recognized the world over as a symbol of power, beauty, and feminine lust – known for her affairs with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. Cleopatra once ruled from a marvelous palace of marble and treasures, but roughly 1,400 years ago that palace sunk.

7. The Sacrificial Horses of Duke Jing of Qi
Duke Jing of Qi was a powerful Chinese ruler in the 6th century BC. And while the story of Duke Jing’s life is rich with enough murder, treachery, and power to be an HBO drama series, the story of his burial is equally interesting. Duke Jing’s tomb was uncovered in 1964 in the Shandong province of China. What archaeologists found buried in the dirt was nothing short of fantastic.

6. Giant Dinosaur Thigh
In 2019, French archaeologists discovered one of the largest intact fossils ever unearthed. The thighbone they found measures an incredible 6.6 feet in length. And the bone is only a femur! 4. Peruvian Pet Cemetery
You may have read the classic Stephen King novel: “Pet Sematary,” or seen the film adaptation, but don’t worry, this archeological find is nothing like that. There are no supernatural regenerative properties here, that I know of. I haven’t been in person. In fact, the pet cemetery uncovered by a Peruvian anthropologist near Lima goes to show how much the ancient Chiribaya people revered their pets.

3. Woolly Mammoth
If you are out digging, what’s the last thing you would expect to find? An ancient burial chamber? A long lost relic? How about a 15,000-year-old woolly mammoth skull?
One of the most amazing things ever found by accident, has to be this! Soybean farmer James Bristle and a friend were doing some major digging to put in a natural gas line.

2. Indonesian Hobbits

1. Otzi
When we think about mummies, especially ancient mummies, the first place that comes to mind is Ancient Egypt. They are inarguably the masters of mummification. However, mummies have been found all over the planet, including in North America, like the world’s smallest mummy in Guanajuato, Central Mexico. But what about natural mummies, ones that were mummified without scooping their brains out of their noses?
