Off Grid Log Cabin: Alone with my Dog in an Ice Storm

#logcabin #offgrid #dog

Relaxing at the cabin with Cali, my Golden Retriever. The weather was incredible, warm and sunny one day with deer coming out to dine on the acorns exposed by the melting snow, but the next day, rain ice pellets fell all night long before changing to snow the following day. It was not the worst ice storm I've witnessed, not like the ice storm of several years ago that shut the northeast down for a few days, but it did some damage.

With our drone, my wife got some incredible aerial footage and photographs of raging rivers, pristine Canadian wilderness in the snow and the log cabin.
The rustic tiny house is extremely cozy right now, especially when my wife and dog are there and the fire in the woodstove is burning, the candles and lanterns are lit and the furs are piled high on the bed. It's extremely cozy now that the floor is insulated and the spaces between the logs have been filled. Woodworking and bushcrafting the structure was very rewarding, but the interior finishes are the icing on the cake. Whenever I'm inside with the fire burning and I look out through the windows and the winter storms raging, I'm inspired to finish the tiny log house as soon as possible so that I can get working on the front porch, the outdoor kitchen, the cellar, workshop, maple syrup shack and more.
I'm particularly excited to live off the land, foraging for wild plants and edibles, growing my own vegetables and becoming self reliant. I can use this off grid cabin as a shelter and base where I can practice living off the land and use primitive technology, learn bushcraft skills, improve my survival skills and my self reliance.
Of course, no video would be complete without the meals that I prepare on the wood stove over the fire with cast iron cookware. In this episode, I make stewed venison spiced with garam masala, with leeks, onions and broccoli. For breakfast, I have fresh chicken eggs from the nearby rural homestead where they raise chickens and turkeys. I will be showing how I put the eggs in long term storage, preserving the food for the future.
My dog and I fall asleep to the hooting of barred owls, and the wind through the trees and the falling rain were a big ASMR triggers for me. It's deep winter outside, but in the cabin was cosy and warm. Sometimes I think living off grid in a tiny house seems much easier, away from the daily stress of life.
In fact, dealing with my high blood pressure and becoming much healthier is my motivation for building this cabin and living the simple life. Not my only motivation of course, I'm also inspired by my wife and my parents, who are living long and happy lives. Inspiration is important in this crazy world, and of course I'm not the only one who wants to escape from society and retreat to a cabin in the woods.
To accomplish my goal of living off grid with as little money as possible, living cheap and saving money wherever possible, I need to continue to hone my woodworking and bushcraft skills, along with tree identifications, foraging, making maple syrup, harvesting chaga, catching fish and game, preserving food for long term storage (dehydrating, salting, curing, smoking, freezing, drying).

The 10 Best Places To Live In Canada - Affordable, Job, Retire, Family

Canada is the best country to live in the world, according to the United Nations. It's also one of the happiest and safest countries in the world.
Do you know that more than 300,000 people made a move to Canada in 2018?
Canada is one of the few countries that doesn't just want temporary workers, it wants citizens from around the world.
This means that it has loosened the requirements needed to apply to become a citizen of the country.
Applicants only have to live in the country for three years in a five year period instead of four years now to qualify.
No matter where you live in Canada, your children have access to free public education from the time they are five to around the age of 19 depending on the province or territory.
Are you planning to move to Canada?
Here are the 10 best places to live in Canada for new immigrants:

10. Montreal, Quebec. (affordable place, raise a family)
9. Vancouver, British Columbia. (most active city, job, best to raise kids)
8. Toronto, Ontario. (retire, job)
7. Kingston, Ontario. (best place to retire)
6. Halifax, Nova Scotia. (place to find a job)
5. Calgary, Alberta. (best to raise a family, find a job, high income)
4. Burlington, Ontario. (most affordable housing, best to raise kids)
3. Quebec City, Quebec. (family-friendly city, cheap place, best to retire, job)
2. Oakville, Ontario. (Overall)
1. Ottawa, Ontario. (best education, study, raise a family, retire)
Please remember, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to these rankings. It all depends on your individual needs and skills.
We hope you will find the right place for you and your family.

Man Living Off-Grid in His Incredible Self-Built Cabin

This man built a beautiful off-grid cabin with the help of friends for $65,000 CAD including the cost of the land. There was no road access to his lot so he had to bring in all of the building materials using a 4-wheeler with a small trailer, and then load them on a material elevator to bring them up a cliff to where he wanted to build his home.

You can find out more about this cabin on Instagram here:

The cabin can collect and store 3,000 litres of rainwater from the roof. One of the water tanks is inside the house to prevent the water from freezing during the winter, and the other two are in a shed that is attached to the cabin so that warm air can be circulated with fans to prevent the other two tanks from freezing as well.

For heat, he has a wood stove, and he brings the firewood up to the cabin using the material elevator.

For power, he has a solar power system and a backup generator for cloudy days.

This micro cabin has two lofts, one is a living room, and one is the bedroom. On the main floor is a kitchen with propane 2-burner cooktop and 110 volt fridge, a bathroom with a sink and a bath (but no toilet because he prefers to have the toilet outside), and a spacious living area with the wood stove and dining table.

He lives in the tiny house with his girlfriend and enjoys the simple lifestyle and the challenge of living sustainably.

Thanks for watching!

THE BEST TENT IN THE WORLD! (Winter Tent Camping & Setup in Freezing Weather- Wilderness Tent)

Katie and I survive our first night camping in freezing weather with our new Wilderness hot tent/wall tent!

In terms of the BEST tent in the world, there can be only one and in my opinioin it is the WALL TENT! See why wall tents are the top tents around.

Our wall tent from WallTentShop.com arrives and we prepare the poles, we cure the wood stove and we set off on our first winter camping adventure and its going to be cold. We do some winter camp cooking on our wood stove. This video features 6 parts, but we think you will enjoy the entire episode.
Part 1- Prepping the Poles
Part 2- Unboxing our hot wall tent
Part 3- Curing our tent's wood stove
Part 4- Adventure Begins- We Setup the Tent
Part 5- Our first overnight camp in Freezing cold weather
Part 6- Our WallTentShop.com Review

The purpose and definition of a tent is shelter. A wall tent not only provides great shelter, it also provides warmth and a place to cook with a wood stove. It's like a portable tiny house that can be setup anywhere and used in the coldest of climates. It's also the best tent because unlike traditional tents you don't have to hunch over and crawl around on the ground. When your inside a wall tent it's like being inside a small cabin. You can stand up straight. You have an area to sleep, sit and cook. Wall Tents are the BEST!
Come along with us on our wall tent adventure!

Extreme Frugal Minimalists Plan to Retire by Age 35!

This couple from Vancouver, BC is planning to retire by age 35! They live an extremely frugal, minimalist lifestyle that allows them to save more than 65% of their annual income. For the past 7 years, they’ve been investing their savings in index funds and they hope to live off the interest generated from their investments when they retire in a few years.

To follow their early retirement journey, check out their blog, Incoming Assets, here:

Although early retirement isn’t accessible to everyone, we do think that what Stephanie and Celestian are doing is interesting because frugal lifestyle choices could help make some financial goals, like getting out of debt, easier to achieve.

To keep their expenses low, Celestian and Stephanie live in a cheap apartment, they don't own a car, they cook nearly all of their meals from scratch, they buy secondhand, they do DIY or cheap haircuts, they use the library for books, movies and games, and a lot more.

We hope you enjoy meeting this inspiring couple and please share your own money-saving tips and hacks in the comments.

Thanks for watching!

TREEHOUSE-STYLE WINTER CABIN ON STILTS DURING A SNOWSTORM! (4K) DAY 1

Vlog Ep. 56 - Treehouse-Style Winter Cabin On Stilts During A Snowstorm! (4K) Day 1

In this video, we explore a treehouse-style winter cabin on stilts, located near Mont Tremblant in Quebec Canada during a snowstorm! The collection of cabins seen in this series are know as “Les Refuges Perchés” at Tremblant. Come along on our winter journey as we also hike the surrounding Parc Eco des Laurentides and play in the snow! Day 2 from the series is coming soon, when we explore more of the cabins!

A note about safety - both turns at 0:23 and 0:25 in this video were filmed in the nearly empty roundabout circular parking lot of the destination, with the aid of a spotter, and the resort was aware that we were doing it. Though we recognize it concerns some folks, and so we've made a decision to no longer do anything like this. As a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces, safety is my utmost concern, and we advocate for designated track days now.

If you enjoyed this outdoor video in the forest, please help support our channel by liking, commenting, subscribing, or sharing the video with friends and family - we really appreciate it, and it helps us with tomorrow's outdoor adventures :)

WINTER IN CANADA 2020 | ANO ANG MAGANDANG GAWIN SA WINTER? BUHAY PINOY IN CANADA

Sledding is a great outdoor activity to help you fall in love with winter. But make sure you won't freeze outside so don't just head out without wearing your winter jacket, ski pants, hat, gloves & winter boots if you want to enjoy yourself. Sledding is just one of the fun and cheap outdoor activities. You can also go ice skating, skiing, ice fishing and so much more. Winter in Canada last a very long time so it's important for our health and sanity to find some excuses to get outside.

Christmas at a Log Cabin in the Canadian Wilderness | Roast Turkey in a Primitive Oven

#christmas #logcabin #turkey
Merry Christmas! My wife and two daughters and Cali, our Golden Retriever, celebrate Christmas a couple of days early at the log cabin in the Canadian forest. I pick my daughters up by snowmobile and we cook a turkey in the earthen oven, snowshoe, open gifts, warm up by the fire with hot chocolate and enjoy a perfect snowfall on the cabin. The last forty minutes of the video is just snow falling on the cabin and a fire burning in the wood stove so if you're not interested in relaxing cabin life style, please turn off the video after I drive the girls back to their truck by snowmobile after watching the moonrise.
Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Please subscribe.

Our Family Winter Vacation in Canada

Join us for our family winter vacation in Canada as we meet up with Audrey's family and Togo the German Shepherd to spend the holiday season and Christmas together at large cabin located in Seeley's Bay, Ontario not too far from Kingston. Whenever we're traveling abroad the one thing we miss most about Canada is our family and friends. Having a chance to spend quality time with them is something we truly relish when we're back home in Canada.

With this in mind we decided to embrace the spirit of a Canadian winter by renting a large cabin for the entire family to enjoy. Here we enjoyed quality time together by the fire, drinking wine, having conversations, playing board games, cooking meals and eating really well. In terms of heading outside to enjoy winter activities we did a lot of sledding and tobogganing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and walking along with playing with Togo the German Shepherd.

More than anyone else, it was the dog who loved being outside. Overall, it was a wonderful winter vacation in Canada and something we're considering doing again in the summer for a completely different atmosphere and feel.

What we did during our winter holiday in Canada:

1) Sledding
2) Wine Drinking
3) Snowboarding
4) Family Dinners
5) Snowshoeing
6) Cooking
7) Making Snow
8) Snowy Walks

Hey guys. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. You're probably going to be watching this video several months down the line. Yep. It might even be springtime but we wanted to make a video of our winter holidays here in Canada. And show you what that is like. Yeah, so basically we finished our travels I think it was December 10th. We came back from Italy and we spent a couple of weeks at home in Brampton.

Originally we were going to go to Florida. We were. This was like a few months ago that was our original plan but then we decided like you know what? There has been some bad weather down there this year and we decided why don't we embrace a Canadian winter. It was actually decided for us when our airbnb host canceled our reservation.

Oh yeah that is right. I forgot that small detail. My family started looking for other possibilities and they settled on a cottage here up north. We're in Seeley's Bay so that is like three hours east of Toronto. Near Kingston and then a half hour north in the woods basically. It is not far at all from Kingston and it is a massive house. It has got three levels. We've got a really big ground level, we've got an upstairs and of course we've got a basement. The great thing about this particular vacation with family is that everyone is here. All of your sisters are here. The dog is here. Togo is here.

And it is just been great. We've really been embracing the winter. We've been going outside doing all kinds of things. Chasing the dog, playing fetch with the dog, also tobogganing. We're doing snowshoeing. We're going to be maybe even snowboarding. I think your sisters are coming back with their snowboards. Back with snowboards. Snowboards and then just to have fun we've all kind of been huddling around the fire playing games, talking, drinking lots of wine. It has just been wonderful.

We've had a lot of family time and we're basically just going to show you what our whole experience has been like. This video is going to be all about the holidays. We're here in this cottage for 8 days and we're basically going to show you what we get up to.

We're going to say it on two. One, two, three. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Woo!
