Title: O Holy Night
Composer: Adolphe Adam (1803-56)
Arranger: John Rutter (1945-)
Second Arranger: J Hewitt (1997-)
Voicing: SATB with piano / organ

-----------

Our next concert is in December 2019, where we'll be performing this piece of music. I've uploaded this and the other learning tracks predominantly for my choir's usage, but I hope any others who struggle to learn in rehearsals will find this useful. If there are any mistakes, please do let me know.

Sopranos only divide twice (bars 64 and 65, and later at bar 93), and altos only once (bars 35-39).

This is a 'splice' of two different arrangements by John Rutter for the classic 'O Holy Night.' I sang an SSA version in secondary school and I just couldn't let go of some of the more 'epic' moments from the SSA when bringing it to an SATB choir. I wasn't overly keen on Rutter's composition for the first verse either (hmmms and ahhs seemed less interesting, especially when compared) so I wrote out both and replaced the first verse with the SSA version, and left the other two as is. It works quite nicely, with an SA focus for verse one, a TB focus with SA descant for verse two, and tutti in harmony for verse three. Not to everyone's taste, but it seems popular amongst my singers!

Lyrics:
O holy night, the stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth;
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
'Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn;

Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices!
O night divine! O night when Christ was born.
O night, O holy night, O night divine.

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming;
With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand:
So, led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here come the wise men from Orient land,
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our friend;

He knows our need, He guardeth us from danger!
Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King! your King! before him bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is Love and His gospel is Peace;
Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother,
And in his name all oppression shall cease,
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful Chorus raise we;
Let all within us praise his Holy name!

Christ is the Lord, O praise his name forever!
His pow'r and glory, evermore proclaim!
His pow'r and glory, evermore proclaim!

O Holy Night! (Percy Faith & Mantovani) Beautiful 4K Christmas Music Video!

LYRICS:

O Holy night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Til He appeared and the soul felt it's worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn
Fall on your knees!

O hear the angel voices
O night divine!
O night when Christ was born
O night divine!
O night, o night divine!

And in His Name, all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
Let all within us praise his holy name
Christ is the Lord!
Their name forever praise we!

O night, o night Divine

O night, o night Divine
Noel, Noel
O night, o holy Divine!

O Holy Night (French: Cantique de Noël) is a well-known Christmas carol composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to the French poem Minuit, chrétiens (Midnight, Christians) by a wine merchant and poet, Placide Cappeau (1808–1877).

In Roquemaure at the end of the year 1843, the church organ was recently renovated. To celebrate the event, the parish priest asked Cappeau, native from this town, to write a Christmas poem, even though the latter never showed an interest in religion, and Cappeau obliged.

Soon after, Adam wrote the music. The song was premiered in Roquemaure in 1847 by the opera singer Emily Laurey.

Unitarian minister John Sullivan Dwight, editor of Dwight's Journal of Music, created a singing edition based on Cappeau's French text in 1855. In both the French original and in the two familiar English versions of the carol, as well as many other languages, the text reflects on the birth of Jesus and of humanity's redemption.

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

“Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.

Music for the Soul O Holy Night/ “Cantique de Noël” (Brian Davies & Graham Sapwell) with Lyrics

Music for the Soul O Holy Night/ “Cantique de Noël” (Brian Davies & Graham Sapwell) with Lyrics

Music for the Soul #39 – O Holy Night/ “Cantique de Noël”
(Words: Placide Cappeau - French(1843) John Sullivan Dwight – English(1855) Music: Adolphe Charles Adam (1847)

Music is the language of the soul, it has a unique and special ability to connect directly to the soul to bring joy, soothe sorrows, relieve stress and stir the emotions.

O Holy Night has been sung millions of times in churches in every corner of the world. This incredible work - requested by a forgotten parish priest, written by a French poet who would later split from the church, given soaring music by a Jewish composer, and brought to Americans to serve as much as a tool to spotlight the sinful nature of slavery as tell the story of the birth of a Saviour, has become one of the most beautiful, inspired pieces of music ever created.

The original French words of the poem “Minuit, Chrétiens” (Midnight Christians) were written by Placide Cappeau in 1843 and later set to music by his friend Adolphe Adam, becoming known as the Christmas carol “Cantique de Noël”. This carol quickly grew to be one of the most beloved Christmas songs in France. In 1855 an American writer, John Sullivan Dwight, an ardent abolitionist, was inspired by the words of the third verse Truly he taught us to love one another; his law is love and his gospel is peace. Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother; and in his name all oppression shall cease. He felt that this wonderful Christmas song needed to be introduced to America and Dwight's English translation of O Holy Night quickly found favour in America.

On Christmas Eve 1906, Reginald Fessendendid something long thought impossible. Using a new type of generator, Fessenden spoke into a microphone and, for the first time in history, a man's voice was broadcast over the airwaves: And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed, he began in a clear, strong voice, hoping he was reaching across the distances he supposed he would. To the few who caught this broadcast, it must have seemed like a miracle. After finishing his recitation of the birth of Christ, Fessenden picked up his violin and played O Holy Night, the first song ever sent through the air via radio waves. When the carol ended, so did the broadcast but not before music had found a new medium that would take it around the world.

This strange and fascinating story of O Holy Night began in France and eventually made its way around the world. A seemingly simple song, inspired by a request from a clergyman, would not only become one of the most beloved anthems of all time, it would mark a technological revolution that would forever change the way people were introduced to music.

The first verse translation of “Midnight Christians” has a beautiful message for us all.

Midnight, Christians, it’s the solemn hour,
When God as man descended unto us
To erase the stain of original sin
And to end the wrath of His Father.
The entire world thrills with hope
On this night that gives it a Saviour.
