One Simple Method to Learn Any Language | Scott Young & Vat Jaiswal | TEDxEastsidePrep

While few of us will ever take on the ambitious challenge of learning four foreign languages in a year, many of us yearn to be more proficient in another language. The secret to success as it turns out is simpler than you think.

Scott Young is a blogger, speaker and author. He previously spoke at TEDx EastsidePrep about his project “The MIT Challenge” to self-test MIT’s undergraduate computer science curriculum in one year, using their freely available information. His most recent project was with Vat Jaiswal, traveling to four countries, learning languages, with the goal of not speaking English for an entire year. He writes about learning and self-education at his website, ScottHYoung.com.

Vat Jaiswal is a graduate student, aspiring architect and filmmaker. His most recent project was with Scott Young on The Year Without English, where he traveled through Spain, Brazil, China, Taiwan and Korea creating four short documentaries on language learning and cultural immersion. He shares his work, including experimental time-lapse photography and an interview series with successful architects, at vatjaiswal.com

A New Way to Learn to Read English | Narda Pitkethly | TEDxSunValley

Narda Pitkethly created a system that profoundly simplifies learning how to read. Watch how her system reduces illiteracy and many of its negative consequences. Narda Pitkethly moved to Japan after college and discovered the Japanese had created a simple method of learning to read, called Hiragana. Through their method, Narda learned to read Japanese in a week. Within three months, her comprehension allowed her to communicate freely in her home city of Fukuoka.
In 1988 Narda moved from Japan to Sun Valley because the small community and year-round outdoor activities enticed her. An accomplished glassblower, she often travels to Boise to create works of art.
When her daughter was identified as a challenged reader in the first grade, Narda discovered that English is one of the hardest languages in the world to learn to read, even for native speakers. Narda analyzed the English alphabet to understand why it is so difficult (1 in 4 children grow up without learning to read). She organized the letters in the same way the Japanese organized their Hiragana characters. Narda reveals an approach to the English language you have never seen before. Luca Lampariello - Translation as a Tool to Learn Any Language

It is a common belief among language learners that one’s native tongue often gets in the way of learning a new language. Not so, says polyglot and language coach Luca Lampariello, who has consistently relied on his mother tongue as a valuable aid in helping him learn over a dozen languages. Over more than a decade of language learning and self-study, Luca has developed and perfected a learning method known as “bidirectional translation”, whereby the learner uses translation from L2 to L1 and back again as a powerful means of deducing the fundamental patterns of any language. Bidirectional translation has helped Luca and many of his students from all over the world find early and lasting success in their language learning endeavours, no matter the language. In this talk, Luca will walk you personally through his groundbreaking method so that you, too, can use translation to revolutionise your own language learning.
