Search for Life On New Planets Documentary - Finding Other Habitable Planets in the Universe

After nine years of operation, NASA's Kepler spacecraft will be retired, but not without making an indelible imprint on humankind's understanding of the universe. Perhaps its greatest legacy is the knowledge that planets outnumber stars in the galaxy. With over 2,500 planet discoveries and another 2,000 awaiting confirmation, Kepler revealed a staggering diversity of worlds turning sci-fi fantasy into scientific reality.
It also changed our collective perspective regarding the feasibility of finding evidence of life beyond Earth and catalysed efforts across the globe to reach that goal.

People began traveling in space in 1961 in tiny spacecraft called capsules, which were launched from Earth by powerful rockets. Russian crews still travel in this kind of craft, in Soyuz capsules, but Americans now travel into space in shuttles, which are rocket-powered space planes.

HOW DO HUMANS SURVIVE IN SPACE?
There is no oxygen in space, so all crewed spacecraft carry a life-support system. This supplies air for people to breathe. The system also includes equipment to keep the air at a comfortable temperature and pressure and to remove carbon dioxide and odors.

HOW DOES SPACE TRAVEL AFFECT PEOPLE?
Gravity in space is much weaker than it is on Earth. When people travel in space, they seem to become weightless. This often makes them feel sick. Their bodies do not have to work as hard, because they are not fighting gravity to sit or stand up. If they stay in space for a long time, the lack of gravity makes their muscles start to waste away. Exercise and a special diet help to combat these effects.

WHAT IS THE FARTHEST ANYONE HAS TRAVELED IN SPACE?
Astronauts on the APOLLO PROJECT traveled to the Moon, about 239,000 miles (385,000 km) away. Russian cosmonaut Valeri Poliakov traveled a distance of about 174 million miles (280 million km) around Earth while in the Mir space station.

In the space race of the 1960s, the US Apollo Project beat the Soviet Union by landing the first astronauts on the Moon. The first Moon landing, by Apollo 11, took place on July 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on another world.

WHAT WAS THE APOLLO SPACECRAFT LIKE?
The Apollo spacecraft was launched from Earth by the Saturn V rocket. On the launch pad, the whole assembly stood 365 ft (111 m) tall. The spacecraft itself weighed 50 tons (45 metric tons). It was made from three main modules (sections). The command module for flight control housed the three-person crew. The service module carried equipment, fuel, and a rocket motor. The lunar module detached from the craft and landed two astronauts on the Moon’s surface.

HOW MANY APOLLO LANDINGS WERE THERE?
There were six Moon landings, beginning with Apollo 11 in July 1969 and ending with Apollo 17 in December 1972. During the missions, 12 astronauts explored the lunar surface for a total of over 80 hours and brought back nearly 880 lb (400 kg) of Moon rock and dust for examination on Earth.

The Science of Exoplanet Discovery - Searching for Alien Life on other Planets

Since the launch of NASA’s Kepler space telescope in 2009, scientists have uncovered thousands of distant exoplanets in the deep depths of space.

Scientists in California and Australia are now hoping to expand upon Kepler’s work with 121 planets potentially hosting life-supporting moons.

The key to finding a habitable exoplanet or moon is to find the stellar bodies within the so-called Goldilocks zone.

These are the ideal hotspots within a solar system where a planet’s atmospherics are neither too hot nor too cold for liquid water to exist.

NASA astronomers announced Thursday they can now predict with certainty the next major cosmic event to affect our galaxy, sun, and solar system: the titanic collision of our Milky Way galaxy with the neighboring Andromeda galaxy.

Pluto and its Moons - Space Documentary 2019 [HD]

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union, a global group of astronomy experts, established a definition of a planet that required it to clear its orbit, or in other words, be the largest gravitational force in its orbit.

Since Neptune's gravity influences its neighboring planet Pluto, and Pluto shares its orbit with frozen gases and objects in the Kuiper belt, that meant Pluto was out of planet status. However, in a new study published online Wednesday in the journal Icarus, UCF planetary scientist Philip Metzger, who is with the university's Florida Space Institute, reported that this standard for classifying planets is not supported in the research literature.

Metzger, who is lead author on the study, reviewed scientific literature from the past 200 years and found only one publication -- from 1802 -- that used the clearing-orbit requirement to classify planets, and it was based on since-disproven reasoning.

He said moons such as Saturn's Titan and Jupiter's Europa have been routinely called planets by planetary scientists since the time of Galileo.

The IAU definition would say that the fundamental object of planetary science, the planet, is supposed to be a defined on the basis of a concept that nobody uses in their research, Metzger said. And it would leave out the second-most complex, interesting planet in our solar system. We now have a list of well over 100 recent examples of planetary scientists using the word planet in a way that violates the IAU definition, but they are doing it because it's functionally useful, he said. It's a sloppy definition, Metzger said of the IAU's definition. They didn't say what they meant by clearing their orbit. If you take that literally, then there are no planets, because no planet clears its orbit.

The planetary scientist said that the literature review showed that the real division between planets and other celestial bodies, such as asteroids, occurred in the early 1950s when Gerard Kuiper published a paper that made the distinction based on how they were formed.

However, even this reason is no longer considered a factor that determines if a celestial body is a planet, Metzger said.

Study co-author Kirby Runyon, with Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, said the IAU's definition was erroneous since the literature review showed that clearing orbit is not a standard that is used for distinguishing asteroids from planets, as the IAU claimed when crafting the 2006 definition of planets.

We showed that this is a false historical claim, Runyon said. It is therefore fallacious to apply the same reasoning to Pluto, he said. Metzger said that the definition of a planet should be based on its intrinsic properties, rather than ones that can change, such as the dynamics of a planet's orbit. Dynamics are not constant, they are constantly changing, Metzger said. So, they are not the fundamental description of a body, they are just the occupation of a body at a current era.

Instead, Metzger recommends classifying a planet based on if it is large enough that its gravity allows it to become spherical in shape.

And that's not just an arbitrary definition, Metzger said. It turns out this is an important milestone in the evolution of a planetary body, because apparently when it happens, it initiates active geology in the body.

Pluto, for instance, has an underground ocean, a multilayer atmosphere, organic compounds, evidence of ancient lakes and multiple moons, he said.

It's more dynamic and alive than Mars, Metzger said. The only planet that has more complex geology is the Earth.

8. THE HOT-COLD PLANET
When it comes to exploring space, one thing many scientists look for are planets that humans could eventually inhabit. One planet that would be a potential option if it weren’t 20 light years away is Gliese 581 c, which was discovered in 2007 and is what’s known as a “super-Earth” planet: an exoplanet with a mass that’s greater than Earth, but is much lower than the ice giants Uranus and Neptune.

7. BLACK WIDOW PULSAR
Pulsars are binary systems containing rapidly spinning neutron stars, which are the compacted core remnants of massive stars that have exploded as supernovas. Neutron stars are typically only as wide as a city, such as Manhattan or Washington, D.C., but weigh around twice as much as the Earth’s sun. One type of pulsar, known as the “black widow,” is named as such because its neutron star consumes its brown dwarf star companion.

6. RUM-AND-RASPBERRY CLOUD
In 2009, scientists discovered a massive dust cloud that had formed 390 light years from the center of the Milky Way galaxy, and they deduced that it smells like rum and tastes like raspberries. Yum! Of course, the cloud, which spans across 150 light years and is named Sagittarius B2, isn’t made of actual rum and raspberries; rather, it’s comprised of elements of both.

5. 3753 CRUITHNE
The possibility of an asteroid hitting Earth - potentially for the second or third time, depending on how you interpret history - is one of humanity’s biggest fears. Despite what movies have led you to believe, it’s doubtful we could stop such a colossal chunk of space rock from colliding with us. But asteroids can be neat to learn about - from afar, of course - and in terms of weirdness, the asteroid known as 3753 Cruithne is more than a little odd.

4. HYPERVELOCITY STARS
When you think about “shooting stars,” you probably envision streaks of light dancing across the sky; and, depending on your beliefs, you might make a wish. However, those aren’t stars you’re seeing - they’re fragments of meteors. Which is why, when many of them fall at at the same time, it’s called a “meteor shower.” But that doesn’t mean there aren’t shooting stars out there in the universe. There are - well, sort of - and they’re both fascinating and confusing.

3. THE MOST MASSIVE AND BRIGHTEST OF STARS
Stars fill the galaxy, but just as there are many types of people, there are many different types of stars. There are small stars, big stars, colossal stars - the list goes on. And, then there are plain old heavy stars like R136a1, which isn’t the biggest star by measurement of radius or volume, but by mass and luminosity. Its mass is 256 times that of Earth’s sun - double what astronomers thought was possible previous to its discovery.

2. GALAXY X
One of the biggest mysteries of the universe is the presence of dark matter. Scientists know it’s out there, but have struggled incessantly to catch a glimpse of it. However, they may be closer to achieving this goal. While speculated upon for years, the first true “evidence” of the existence of a dark matter galaxy came in 2009, when ripples of energy were detected in the Milky Way’s outer disk without any clear source.

1. ROGUE PLANETS
All of our solar system’s planets are bound by the gravity of our sun. Most of the universe’s solar systems are based on a similar model. Yet, there are some planets out there that aren’t bound by the gravity of stars. They’re called rogue planets, and they move throughout the galaxy after being evicted from their star system, or never having actually belonged to one.
